The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2023... Part 01 (Jan 2023 Wk 01-04) Spotify Playlist

The first Dirty Dozen on 2023 as the end and the start of the year is always a lean time for new releases. So far this year we haven't been selecting weekly ones as there simply hasn't been enough outstanding new music to make up a dozen each week. Therefore, here's our selection of what we consider the best twelve releases for Jan 2023.

Wk 02 was a close run thing between Ledisi and Billy Valentine but Ledisi prevailed simply because Valentine's single is a cover version.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 41 (Oct 2022 Wk 41) Spotify Playlist

In no particular order other than tempo. 

This week's dozen extended to fifteen as it's been a bit lean on the more traditional soul front of late. They're all from this week except a latent discovery of Annyett Royale from 2 Sep and Leven Kali was released back in April but he released a video for it on Monday ahead of including it on an EP of the same name ("Let It Rain") on 28 Oct.

The Jack Moves third album "Cruiserweight" chose itself as SoulStrutter Selection of the Week upon hearing it on Friday as it's a solid set throughout. However, in other weeks several others may have made it such as Lynn Davis, Mikhala Jené, Adi Oasis and CJW (Chris Weaver) with what I believe is a debut single

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 40 (Oct 2022 Wk 40) Spotify Playlist

In no particular order other than tempo. 

This week's straight dozen. I'm struggling a bit to choose a particular standout track for the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week but after due consideration it was between Jazmine Sullivan, Novine, Deva Mahal and the ultimate choice Mavis SWAN Poole with "The Assignment". I'm afraid to say that unfortunately I don't foresee any of them getting any major airplay or featuring in any charts but hopefully stand to be corrected. I think the ones 'most likely' will be predictably the more uptempo tunes such as Victor Haynes, Assal and MOONGA K.

A bit of padding this week as there weren't that many in the category so three tracks from Frank Riley's album have been included as retro tracks.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 39 (Oct 2022 Wk 39) Spotify Playlist

In no particular order other than tempo. 

Plenty on neo soul releases around last week with the Neo Soul Dirty Dozen extended to two dozen but not so many more traditional soul tunes. A few liberties have been taken as technically The Isley Brothers track included is a cover of Switch (1978), both Beth tracks borrow from Aretha ("Call Me") and S.O.S. Band ("Tell Me If You Still Care") respectively and  DMo!'s "DTFTSW" also dips into the S.O.S. Band song and has been out a couple of weeks on Bandcamp. Carmy Love probably should be in the Covers etc. Dozen as it has a retro feel. Juantia Wynn has been around a few weeks from promo and released on Bandcamp but got an official release on the main DSP's on Friday.

In fact, it could be argued that Gloria Scott is retro and Dennis Taylor is a remix but if all the above were left out there would be very little left to put in the playlist such is the sparsity of good quality original material!

This week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week goes to JELISA for her debut five track EP "Season Of Vulnerability".
