Stax Connoisseurs Collection

Our parting shot that we'll leave you with is a playlist of many of our favourite Stax recordings compiled to coincide with the concluding two parts of the HBO documentary "Stax: Soulsville U.S.A." which airs tomorrow night.

Not the 'usual' suspects trotted out on many Stax compilations, bar one or two, but all known to soul connoisseurs.

Stevie Wonder 74 Today

Stevie Wonder celebrates his 74th birthday today. What can we say that hasn't already been said about the musical genius?

So here are 20 songs from the 60s whilst still a teenager including some favourites and lesser known sides.

SoulStrutter Selections April 2024

After teasing with our selections of Retro, Covers & Reissues and Neo Soul for April '24 here's our selections of the best of April 2024.

There will be some overlap as we've included the best of the best from our Neo Soul, Covers & Reissues playlists along with more traditional new releases not included in either. We've limited it to 40 with a running time of approx. 2 hours 30 mins, but of course you can skip if you wish but why would you as these are the best April had to offer?

You can hear these, and all the freshest releases, on Steve Aggasild's radio shows each week: SoulAndJazzFlavas on Panacea Radio (Tue 8pm-10pm) and Soul Struttin' on Soul Music Radio (Fri 9pm-11pm).

A big thanks to LoGraphiti (Lorraine Winser) for the great new artwork.

SoulStrutter Selections April 2024 - Neo Soul

Our selections of some of the best Neo Soul releases for April 2024. There are many (approx. 20) that we shortlisted but didn't get around to posting owing to our Easter break at the beginning of the month so we've extended the playlist to 50 tracks with a running time of approx. 2 hours 30 mins. They are loosely in ascending release date order.

SoulStrutter Selections April 2024 - Cover Versions & Reissues

The second instalment of our April 2024 summary consists our selection of 30 of the best cover versions and reissues released in April with a running time of approx. 2 hours.

SoulStrutter Selections April 2024 - Retro Soul

It's that time again where we take stock of the previous month's releases and highlight some that we consider to be the best of the month, just in case you missed any of them.

These are our Retro Soul selections of which there haven't been a great deal that we have found in April. They are new original recordings but with a retro feel, as cover versions and reissues of old songs will be playlisted separately and there are an abundance of those.

Note:

There's six in the playlist that we haven't (yet) done a full post for e.g. Diana Lee we think is an early 90s recording previously unreleased on a newly released album and Chuck Montegue is an obscure 60s recording that has just been released that is possibly previously unreleased as we can find no trace of it. Gabriella is a deep soul ballad reminiscent of Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind" in places. Two tracks from a new album by Aalon and a track from a new album by veteran 60s/70s girl group The Flirtations.

Technically, Rodney Stith is a remix/reissue and mea is a reworking of Zhane's "Just Like That" from 1997.

SoulStrutter Selections Q1 2024

Being the end of the first quarter on 2024 we've scoured through our 2024 playlists and put together several 'best of' playlists for Q1 2024 which we'll schedule over the next week as we are on an Easter break.

When you're at the coal face each day mining for new material it can get rather soul destroying when good soul music is being rather elusive but when we look back at the first quarter of 2024 it was a challenge confining the playlist below to 50, ideally we were planning to list only 30 (90-120 mins). However, we struggled to leave many out so let the playlist run to 50 tracks with a running time of around 3 hours.

We also attempted to limit it to one track per artist/album but have failed on a few occasions. Which Sy Smith, Ledisi, TMF or Ricky Jones tracks, for example, do you include/leave out, but we've had to be ruthless.

So here's a flavour of 'some' of the best that 2024 has had to offer, some that you may have already forgotten about or missed completely. Apologies to artists who haven't made the cut this time (although some will have been included in out album selections and, whilst some album tracks feature, the playlist is focussed predominantly on singles) but we may have to do a part 2?

SoulStrutter Pick of the Pack for Jan 2024

Whilst we are trawling through the first Friday on the month's new releases here's our pick of the pack for January 2024.

There's 40 tracks with a running time of approx. 2hr 15mins but of course you can skip through them. They're in no particular order of merit, simply listed by date of release. The first three tracks are hangovers from 2023, the first from Nov and the other two from the tail end of Dec.

This one has much more of a contemporary feel. If it's old school you want then we did a Retro Soul playlist for those on Tuesday, so between the two there should be something you like.

Note that one of the best, Moorea Masa & The Moods "Distraction", was released last Friday and then by Tue was withdrawn. We have left it in just in case it's reissued.

SoulStrutter Selection of Retro Soul Jan 2024

There's very little so far this week on the new music front so, as we've already posted a couple of retro releases, we bring you our top 25 retro, covers and reissues released in January. The covers/remakes/reissues are obvious but the the retro ones are arbitrary and subjective, but all sound old school to our ears from various decades.

Covers: by Jacob G. (John Gary Williams), Napoleon Demps (Little Beaver), Lebrado (Enchantment also a reissue from 2009), Ashton Grey Project (Rufus & Chaka Khan), Igor Gerzina & Anya Alu (Toto and others)., Methrone (Marvin Gaye), Paul Simpson Uniquity (Ethel Beatty)

Cover/Sample: Maurice Mahon (Bobby Womack) Mike E. (sure this uses elements of Simply Red's Holding Back The Years), occochill (we think this samples an 80s song that we can't identify .. anyone?)

Reissues: Harvey Scales, Lebrado,

McKenzie & Gardiner is unreleased from 30 years ago and we believe that Gigi Copeland & Lou Ragland must be an unreleased song from the 80s. The remainder all have an old school feel.
