In 2008 TV personality, comedian, actor and singer
Wayne Brady released an album titled "A Long Time Coming". I noticed yesterday that it appears to have been reissued digitally
and includes one of the ground breaking and iconic soul songs of all time,
Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" from 1964.
Cooke wrote the song after inspiration hearing Bob Dylan's "Blowing In
The Wind" and the strive for civil rights. It was
released on his album "Ain't That Good News" in March 1964 but not
released as a single until December. Cooke was shot dead aged just 33 by
the female manager of Hacienda Motel, L.A. on 11 Dec 1964, just two weeks before it's
release! The death was ruled as justifiable homicide.
Believe it or not "A Change Is Gonna Come" was released as the B side to
"Shake", presumably as it was considered too politically sensitive at the
time to release as the A side?
Whether or not it has been reissued is irrelevant really as it's a
good version amongst literally hundreds of version that have been recorded
over the years.
