The Monophonics [2023] - Love You Better (45 Edit) / The Shape Of My Teardrops [Colemine #CLMN-233]

Colemine, having drip fed us with three mediocre singles ahead of it and, dropped the full album "Wait Til I Get Over" from Durand Jones on Friday and the least said about it the better but the clues were there, a strange and confused album. It's not an album for soul music buffs that's for sure, but then perhaps it's not meant to be? It has everything bar the kitchen sink in terms of styles ranging from pure pop (the opening track could be a Beatles song) through country, gospel, jazz, R&B, hip hop but very little soul.

Meanwhile, back on planet soul, the label has released two tracks from The Monophonics last album, "Sage Motel" (released a year ago on 15 May '22) on 45. The single leads with "Love You Better" (we are told that it is a brand new cut for 45) flipped with "The Shape Of My Teardrops".

Available to pre-order from Colemine for release on 16 Jun '23

Nao Yoshioka & Blue Lab Beats [2023] - Stuck Wit U [Sweet Soul Records] PROMO

Neo soul singer Nao Yoshioka from Osaka, Japan, debuted in 2012 with a single "Make The Change" which then featured on her debut album "The Light" released the following year. She has now released four albums to date, plus a live album with Brian Owens.

Her latest single, "Stuck Wit U", is due out on Friday (12 May '23) in collaboration with Blue Lab Beats. This collaboration has been quite a few years in the making as they met back in 2017 when she was a guest for a Mamas Gun gig at London's Jazz Cafe.

Blue Lab Beats released a remix of her song "Loyalty" in 2020 and in 2022, whilst on her European tour, they played a session together at Blue Lab Beat's studio and she featured as a guest on stage with them at their Blue Note Place performance in Japan.

We are told that she has another single scheduled for next month ahead of several gigs at the Java Jazz Festival in June, London's Jazz Cafe and TivoliVredenburg, Den Haag, NL in July with another single scheduled for September.

Ingram Street [2023] - Streetlights [Self Released] (Full Album)

Brothers Howard 'Minquel' and Daniel 'Woody' Ingram, otherwise known as Ingram Streetreleased their debut album "Escapism" in 2015. They followed it  with "Paint The Townin 2020 produced by 'omnipresent' Preston Glass.

On Friday (5 May '23) they released their third album "Streetlights". As we stated earlier today about The Realm being prolific (on the post for his new single, "Love Hurts"), he features on three tracks on this album with remixes of "Insane", "Don't Cry" and their last single "Natural High". Remixes are also provided by DJ Soulchild, Nigel Lowis and DJ PB & DJ Carlos.

With the remixes you may have already guessed that the album is a blend existing songs that have been remixed and new songs. We deduce that the new songs are, the upbeat title track "Streetlights", the smooth ballad "I Just Want Your Love" (which are our picks of the pack especially the latter with it's timeless feel), "Throwback", "Change Your Name" and possibly "Shake It Up".

Charles Mann [2023] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions]

Charles Mann will probably not be a particularly well known name except perhaps to rare soul aficionados who he will be known best for three songs, "It's All Over" (which was the last song played at the end of each Northern Soul All-nighter session at The Pier/Winter Gardens at Cleethorpes in the mid 70s) along with the modern soul dancer "I Can Feel It".

The other is "Shonuff No Funny Stuff Love" (included below) which is a cracking modern soul dancer. It was released on Dave Crawford's LA Records in 1981, which sadly isn't, and can't, be included on this new four track Philadelphia Re-edit Session by Paul Simpson as it wasn't recorded or produced in Philly, even though some issues of the record were manufactured and distributed by Jamie/Guyden.

The four tracks that Paul has edited are all from his first solo album "Say You Love Me Too" for ABC in 1973 which involved the usual Philly suspects Baker, Young & Harris along with Vince Montana as well as percussionist Larry Washington and recorded at Sigma engineered by Joe Tarsia. He released just one more album "High Qualities" in 1989.

The opening track is a rendition of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker penned Steely Dan song "Do It Again", the last "Stop" was written by Dave Crawford and Joe Hinton (which I seem to recall was recorded by someone else but don't remember by whom) with the remaining two written by Mann.

Track Listing

01 - Do It again (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 8:59
Only released as a single in France & Germany

02 - It's all over (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:35

03 - I can feel it (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 4:25
       His first single on ABC

04 - Stop (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 3:24
Released as a single only in Germany

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul's dedicated website available for a two weeks only. We're not sure exactly when this was released but, to be on the safe side, bag it now if you want it as they have a limited shelf life before being withdrawn.
