Gillespie & Co. Feat. Coko Buttafli [2022] - What You Gonna Do / Hit The Dance Floor [Funk Night]

A forthcoming limited (500) vinyl release on Detroit's Funk Night label is the sixth release by Gillespie & Co (formally The Aries Vibration/La Glosta Nostra).

Both sides, "What You Gonna Do" / "Hit The Dance Floor", were written by Gloucester (UK) based producer Andrew Gillespie who also plays flute/percussion on the tracks which feature the vocals of  Coko Buttafli from Pontiac, IL. It's a retro sister funk tune.

Funk Night is a label born out of  one of Detroit City's longest running DJ nights and is run by Detroit heavyweight funkster DJ/promoter/producer Frank Raines.

No details available as yet how or when to order but presumably will be available via the vinyl retailers.

The Entertains [2022] - I'll Answer You With Love / Your Love I Give Up [Soul Junction #SJ547]

Soul Junction's next vinyl 7" is another pairing of Rich Calloway compositions (if you recall the last SJ release consisted of two songs written by him recorded by Hill District and Richie Merrett and licensed from Calloway's C-Way Productions.

The latest release consists of two previously unreleased sides by The Entertains from Cleveland, OH. They released just one single in 1975 "Love Will Turn It Around" / "Why Couldn’t I Believe Them" on Pittsburgh label Steel Town owned by Nick Holiday (although 45Cat has it down as a Cleveland label?). The A side was a Highland Room (Blackpool Mecca) spin for Colin Curtis.
The group members changed over time but the line-up for their Steel Town single was Donald Rice and his cousin Howard Rice, Alfred Wilson and Andrew Wright the lead vocalist on all The Entertains songs. They recoded the songs at Jeree's studios in New Brighton, PA, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh (the studio is still running to this day). The tune proved popular locally around the DMV but didn't break nationally.

The group did another session with Calloway at Jeree's studios in 1978 recording the two sides presented for the first time by Soul Junction as owing to financial constraints at the time they never saw release.

The A-side is an emotionally charged ballad/stepper "I'll Answer You With Love" with the opening monologue parts performed by Howard Rice. While the B-side "Your Love I Gave It Up" is a punchier up-tempo version of Richie Merrett's earlier C-Way Records recording "I Gave It Up" which was the flipside to "You'll Always Have Yesterday Standing By" (the last Soul Junction single release).

It's available from 20 Jun 2022.

DJ Kool Keith [2022-06-05] - Soulful Slow Jams [Soul Groove Radio]

DJ Kool Keith (The Soul Emperor) has managed this week to include at least one tune for each decade from 60s-20s. However, as it's the Queen's Jubilee (in case you hadn't noticed! .. as if!)  I need to pull him up for not including one from the 50s! (a Sam Cooke or Ray Charles perhaps?)

A great track from Tashan's (Rashad) debut album "Chasin' A Dream" and his debut single. Now whatever happened to him? (Update after writing this, a few days later, I stumbled across a new single by DJ N-JOY Feat Tashan7 "You Lify Me Up" (27 May 2022) who is the very same fellow so he is still performing!) Following it is Walter & Scotty (Wallace) who of course are the Scott twins of  The Whispers.

He's included a track by Solid Solution which I thought was album only but it was reissued on Soul 'O' Sonic which was a 70s label. It transpires that Dave Welding and John Anderson (the maestros behind Grapevine and Soul Junction) instigated the legal repress (along with their modern soul gem "Think About It Girl") via Soul 'O' Sonic's Ernest Kelly (the executive producer of the album) circa 2007 and these sell for around £50.

Discogs also has a single listed for "Think About It Girl" on Silver Spoon which has never sold on there and there are none for sale so it must be pretty scarce. There is some controversy over the Silver Spoon single which deserves a separate post rather than posting here as Dave Welding interviewed the group in 2016 and has kindly sent the transcript which makes interesting reading.

Global Soul [2022-07-03] - Showcase Jazz Cafe, London 19:00-23:00 3rd July 2022

Global Soul is hosting another showcase on 3rd July 2022 at London's Jazz Cafe featuring five UK soul artists Cherise, Sipprell, Morgan Munroe, Mychelle and Piper Grace with a unnamed special guest to be announced. Click on image below for link to ticket sales.

Owing much of her early musical development to the highly respected grass roots organisation Tomorrow’s Warriors, whose alumni include Nubya Garcia and Ezra Collective, Cherise then went on to study at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music. Since then she has played venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Washington DC’s Kennedy Centre, festivals including The London Jazz Festival and Love Supreme as well as performing alongside artists including Nubiyan Twist and Corinne Bailey Rae.  To add to this, in 2019 Cherise was awarded Jazz FM’s Vocalist of the Year Award and in 2020, she was also named Vocalist of the Year by the Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

From her solo material to Nubiyan Twist, which we exclusively previewed, Global Soul have been strong supporters from the outset.
A truly multi-faceted artist, Cherise is fast proving herself to be one of the most fiercely talented young musicians around. Her effortless, irresistible vocal alongside her honest and soulful song writing manage to be simultaneously contemporary and timeless, firmly marking her out as one of the most exciting talents around. Her debut solo single "Remedy" was a SoulStrutter Selection of the Week and also featured in the SoulStrutter Top 100 Tracks of 2021.

Sipprell
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer, Sipprell is fast becoming a staple amongst the diverse and ever popular R&B scene. She honed her craft from a young age, becoming well versed in violin, piano and guitar she would later use to craft and shape her sound.

She has enjoyed support from the likes of Global Soul, Complex UK, Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Foundation fm. With ‘Bad History’ being heavily featured on the Global Soul Chart.

In addition to her own solo material, she provided vocal arrangements and written songs for Nao as well as performing violin and providing backing vocals for Ed Sheeran.

Hailing from the thriving scene in Leicester she moved to London in 2019 soon becoming a staple on the Live circuit.

Benefiting from the ILUVLIVE Artist development programme and winning support from SBTV which included gifting a home studio! Highlighted on DJ Targets BBC 1Xtra IG live series her entrepreneurial mindset won her £20k from the Only Fans Creative Fund to utilise the platform to promote her music which has proved very successful.

Her new single "Mutual" from the forthcoming Elvira EP a top 5 trending track on Audiomack, BBC Introducing's Track Of The Week and championed by Global Soul, DJ Target and Victoria Jane. Not forgetting that it was SoulStrutter Selection of the Week  on release!

Born and raised in Hackney, Mychelle first picked up a guitar aged 10. At 17 she quickly began making a name for herself busking around the capital. In 2019 she was spotted by Idris Elba who invited her to his studio to write and sing on his Yardie Mixtape project, the soundtrack to his directorial film debut of the same name.
She first performed for Global Soul in 2020 at Colours in Hoxton. She dropped her stunning debut single ‘The Way’ accompanied by a video directed by photographer Michaela Quan (Vogue, The Face) in 2021.
Championed by Global Soul, DJ Target, Adele Roberts, DJ ACE, Jamz Supernova and Victoria Jane her recent single from her EP ‘Forbidden Fruit’ reached No 6 in the Global Soul Chart.

Originally from Devon she first found her voice aged 2! Having recently moved to London to pursue a career in Music and in a very short time she has already had success!
She has been working with WAVSDNTDIE (Rag’n’Bone Man, Tiana Major9, Wretch 32, Benjamin AD, Kara Marni etc) with the first two singles lifted from her forthcoming ‘Distractions’ EP already receiving much critical acclaim.  She has had features in Clash Magazine, WordPlay and Notion with airplay from Victoria Jane, DJ ACE, Nadia Jae, BBC Introducing, Rinse FM and Global Soul culminating in her most recent single ‘Caught Up’ reaching Number 5 in the chart.
Definitely one to watch.
