Jimetta Rose [2022] - The Gift - Around The Way Queen [Street Corner Music]

I think that basically this album by Jimetta Rose "The Gift - Around The Way" consists of vocal tracks overlaid on  beats released between 2013-17 on Street Corner Music's The Gift series of albums Vol. 1 - Vol. 10.

Certainly, one of the better tracks, "Still Here" is based on Denmark Vessey "Pump Yo' Brakes" on "The Gift Vol. 9", which in turn samples Jean Plum's modern soul classic "Here I Go Again" on Hi (1976).  I don't have the time, nor inclination, to detect what's used in all the others!

This won't be to everyone's taste as it's sort of off-center, soul meets jazz meets hip-hop and sounds a bit dissonant, but it's different, edgy and pushes boundaries if that's your thing.

To break you in gently, my two picks are "Still Here" (familiarity?) and "Oohs & Ahhs"

Jimetta Rose  is from L.A. and has released two previous albums "The Barber's Daughter" in 2010 and "The Light Bearer" in 2016.

"Black Light" was released as a single on 14 Feb.

The Global Soul chart for Sat 26th Feb 2022. The show was recorded this week and there seems to have been a cock-up in programming so I'm not sure when/if the second hour was broadcast, but the first hour was aired an hour after the scheduled time. It doesn't really matter as podcast is below.

No "Essential 5" but 13  'Breakers' were played which will be posted separately.

The top two stay put for a second week and the highest mover is SoulStrutter Selection of the Week for week 06 (13 Feb) (Melba Moore & Carmichael Musiclover) and last week's (week 07) is the second highest new entry (LaToya London & Anthony Hamilton). Somehow I can't see this week's i.e. Rae getting anywhere near this chart which is a shame!

DeVita [2022] - American Gothic [AOMG] (Full EP)

The EP "American Gothic" from DeVita has been floating around relatively unnoticed for a couple of weeks (released 15 Feb 2022). DeVita states that she got her name from Evita Peron.

The clear standout is "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Eat Your Heart Out, Buddy Kane!" is also quite nice if you like more of an R&B vibe.

DeVita is from Chicago but as there is also a version of "Bonnie & Clyde" on the EP sung in Korean she must have Korean heritage. She debuted with a four track EP "Creme" in Apr 2020.

Aydiee Vaughn [2022] - Black Lucy Experience [Self Released] (Full EP)

On Sunday's I'm time constrained by posting weekly summaries and charts so don't have much time for posting new material but the second found yesterday is a six track EP "Black Lucy Experience" from Aydiee Vaughn (Duncan) (pronounced Adeevon). It appears to be her debut EP. However she is no newcomer as she has material on her YouTube channel dating back 12 years and has credits on Discogs for backing vocals on Barry White's 1991 album "Put Me In Your Mix".

As well as Barry White she has worked with The Whispers, Al B. Sure! Portrait, Miki Howard, The Chimes, Voices, Jasmine Guy, Kool Skool, DTB, Brenda Russell, Paul Jackson, Jr.

You may recognise her as she is also an actress who has appeared in many TV series including The Shield.

I 'suspect' that some of this material has been in the can for years as it's a mixed bag with "Still Loving You" sounding a bit 80s, "Set The Bar" has a 90s stepper vibe and another with the same vibe is "The One" with a rap to 'bring it up to date'. Both "Jump In" and "Calling My Name" have a bit of a southern soul feel. The clear standout, for me, is the superb, soulful, ballad "Baby Make It Rain".

A single "Better Things" released on Saturday (26 Feb 2022) by Officially Mo (Monique Amy Herold) who I believe is a vlogger from Cape Town, South Africa. It would seem to be her only release to date.
