Richard Searling [2021] - Hot 100 Northern Soul 45s COMPLETE

Having posted Richard Searling's Hot 100 Modern Soul 45s and more recently Crossover Hot 100, he did a Hot 100 Northern Soul Countdown at the end of 2021 which was drafted but not posted, so here are all six parts in one place with full playlist. There are actually 101 as he chose two at #12 as well as an additional five outside the 100 in the last show to fill the hour.

Richard Searling is one of the most respected rare soul DJs in the UK but for any not familiar with his name he was one of the key DJs at the legendary Wigan Casino between 1973-81 and has been presenting soul radio shows since the 80s and currently does a show every Sunday on Solar Radio between 10:00-1200 GMT.

Trying to select a Top 100 will always be a bit contentious and many on my own, and probably your, favourites are not featured, but it is what it is!

Here's 20 omissions from the golden age just off the top of my head, I'm sure I could come up with plenty of other worthy candidates, as could you:
Eddie Parker - "I'm Gone"
Bernie Williams - "Ever Again"
Ruby Andrews - "Just Loving You"
Garland Green - "Girl I Love You"
The Artistics - "Girl I Need You"
Ronnie McNeir - "Sitting In My Class"
Bobby Hebb - "You Want To Change Me"
Velours - "I'm Gonna Change"
Sapphires - "Gotta Have Your Love"
Apollas - "Mr Creator"
Del- Larks - "Job Opening"
Darrell Banks / J. J. Barnes - "Our Love Is In The Pocket"
Superlatives - "I Still Love You"
Sydney Barnes / Jerry Cook - "I Hurt On The Other Side"
Art Freeman - "Slippin' Around"
Chuck Wood - "Seven Days Is Too Long"
Lou Johnson - "Unsatisfied"
Montclairs - "Hung Up On Your Love"
Voices Of East Harlem - "Cashing In"
Ray Pollard - "The Drifter"

SOTAR - State Of The Art Radio

Another relatively new internet soul radio station State Of The Art Radio (SOTAR) (https://www.stateoftheartradio.co.uk/) was set up during Covid lockdown in 2020 by Michael Artwell aka Arty.

Arty has been a DJ on the south England club scene for thirty six years and is still going strong. The station was born out of his true love for feel good radio and music that evokes memories of the past and creates new ones of tomorrow.

When Arty was 20 years old he plugged a microphone into his stack system and played a load of soul tunes and recorded a show and pretended he was Robbie Vincent. For non UK residents or those not old enough to remember, Robbie was 'the man' in the 70s / 80s (and beyond as he still broadcasts on Jazz FM on Sundays) who had a national radio show and was one of very, very few programming soul music on the national airwaves. It was the 'go-to' and 'must listen' radio show, if you were into soul music back in the day.

As a young boy Arty loved listening to the radio, shows by Robbie Vincent,, Radio Luxembourg's Emperor Roscoe & Tony Prince, Greg Edwards' 'Soul Spectrum' on Capital Radio, along with BBC Radio 1's DLT (Dave Lee Travis), Noel Edmonds,, Simon Bates, Steve Wright and Tony Blackburn who were all legends to him.
As with the variety of DJs above, Arty wanted to create a radio station that appealed to all tastes, hoping listeners would like what they heard and also find other genres to their liking. and ensure that State of the Art Radio would then grow with its audience.

The station plays Soul, Reggae, R&B, Retro ‘70s and Dance shows. With Soul being his favourite music, Sundays are dedicated to that genre. Soul shows also pop up on other days, so just check the website:  .

Arty tells us: "We are really doing our own thing, there is a little bit for everybody here. We have a passionate team of presenters and listeners, all united by the love of music. So if your looking for a great station that plays serious music in lots of genres, 'call off the search', it’s all about State Of The Art Radio".

Our own Steve Aggasild now has two shows per week on SOTAR Sun & Wed 20:00-22:00 GMT.

The Masqueraders [2023] - How // One More Chance / Be Happy For Me [Hit And Run #HR 1547]

The second new reissue from Hit And Run consists of three sides from The Masqueraders from the catalogue of Lou Beatty's La Beat label from 1966 and 1967. The label was co-owned with James Hendrix who had earlier set up the Carrie label in Detroit.

We've covered The Masqueraders in depth recently as, sadly, lead singer Sam Hutchins died on 20 Dec 2022. So for background information on the group please visit the link above.

Some unfortunate events outside of their control prevented them becoming household names, such as the civil rights riots when they were on the verge making a breakthrough in 1967. However, they got a glimpse of the spotlight some 50 years later, three members still together, in 2017 appearing on America's Got Talent winning the hearts of a nation.

The A side is their very hard to find 1966 single "How" on La Beat which has been a Northern Soul favourite for many years. The B side consists of a superb slice of 'crossover' soul "One More Chance" which is possibly my own favourite from them but they did record some great music which has languished in relative oblivion. It is paired with "Be Happy For Me", another 'so soulful' mid-temp song, both released in 1967 on La Beat.

It's 'criminal' really that none of these even entered the R&B chart at the time, but are now available for a fraction of the cost of original vinyl which are now all well into three figures with "How" being the rarest which is into four figures.

Belita Woods [2023] - That's When I'll Stop Loving You / You Do Your Thing And I'll Do Mine // Magic Corner [Hit And Run #HR 1546]

A superb release from Hit and Run with three tracks from Belita Woods  One of the sides in particular ("Magic Corner") somehow escaped Richard Searling's recent Crossover Hot 100. I demand a recount!

The three sides on this release are from two singles from 1969 on Ollie McLaughlin's Moira label which only released eight singles: two from Woods, three from The Fabulous Counts (who were mentioned the other day as they were Spyder Turner's backing group), two from Jimmy Soul Clark and one from The Firestones (who were formerly known as The Falcons who at some point had members such as Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd and Levi Stubbs brother Joe Stubbs (Contours, Originals, 100 Proof aged in Soul).

Although relegated to the B side on the Hit and Run reissue, "Magic Corner" was the first on Moira (106) which has a sister funk tune of the flip, "Grounded", recorded by Gloria Taylor on Silver Fox in 1970. The record was also mistakenly pressed on a blue Karen label, the label had been misprinted. Needless to say these sell for bigger bucks than the Moira issues and none have sold on Discogs and I could only find two listed on Popsike.

The A side was the next Moira release (107) leading with "That's When I'll Stop Loving You" (later recorded by Betty Wright on her "Danger High Voltage" album in 1974) paired with "You Do Your Thing And I'll Do Mine" written by Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie and Tony Hester which is quite a raw funky number.

Belita Karen Woods was born on 23 Oct 1948 and released another single "I Just Love You" / "Who's Fooling Who" on Epic in 1973, both songs arranged and produced  by the recently departed Barrett Strong (who was also signed to Epic at the time) with Strong writing the A side (a lovely modern soul tune) and assisted by Motown Funk Brother Paul Riser on arrangement.  She released a couple of others in the 80s, one with Ron Banks (The Dramatics) and another with Dennis Rowland, and in 2003 cut "The Best Of Me" with Leroy Burgess.

In the late 70s she was a lead singer with Brainstorm. The group consisted of nine males and two female members, Belita and Trenita 'Bongo Lady Way' Womack, the niece of Bobby Womack. After a minor hit with "Wake Up and Be Somebody", they had a disco smash with "Lovin' Is Really My Game" in 1977. They had three more R&B chart hits and released three albums. A few other top Brainstorm tracks to listen to which feature Belita, if you're not already familiar with them, are "This Must Be Heaven" (backing Lamont Johnson), "We're On Our Way" and "If You Ever Need To Cry".

Around 1989 she joined George Clinton in Parliament-Funkadelic and toured with P-Funk All-Stars. She also sang with Enemy Squad which also had Kyle Jason (who's just released a very good album "The Right Place") providing backing vocals.

In 1990 Ian Levine reformed The Undisputed Truth and drafted in Belita along with original members Joe Harris (The Fabulous Peps / Ohio Untouchables (later Ohio Players)) and Brenda Joyce Evans (The Delicates) to sing on a version of "Law of the Land" which was released on 12" on Levine's Motorcity label.

Sadly Belita died on 14 May 2012 of heart failure and only a day before an interview with on TV33 WHPR, Detroit, host Barry Ross was filmed and is available to watch on YouTube Part1 Part 2. A very sweet lady.
