Mariah Carey [2005] - Fly Like A Bird [Island / Def Jam #B0005784-02]

In case you haven't yet listened to this weeks SoulAndJazzFlavas show from Steve Aggasild (who played this as one of his three slow jam selections) then you are in for a treat. I know there will be those who will see the artist name and simply skip on, but they will have missed out on this, perhaps, little known gem.

The song, "Fly Like A Bird", was released on Mariah Carey's 2005 album "The Emancipation of Mimi" and wasn't released as a single (except for some promo CDS' after the album was released in early 2006) and hence it didn't fare too well on the charts, making this probably not very well know except to die hard Mariah fans who probably wouldn't have appreciated this particular gospel flavoured song by her.

The song was written by Sounds Of Blackness member James 'Big Jim' Wright who was also a member of Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis' Flyte Time Productions.

Now get yourself over to Steve's latest SoulAndJazzFlavas podcast to see what else you are missing out on!

Lou Ragland & Great Lakes Orchestra [2022] - Trouble [Numero Group]

Another quality Numero Group digital release, this one is from yesterday by Lou Ragland & The Great Lakes Orchestra with "Trouble". It was originally recorded in sessions in 1982-83 which I believe first appeared on a Japanese album "Lou Ragland & Great Lakes Orchestra" in 2016.

Ragland moved from his native Cleveland, OH, in the early 80s to Las Vegas and, with the lack of record companies there, he set up his own and Great Lakes Records and Casino Records were born. He released an album/EP "Love Moods" (1985) on Casino and a single "This Is The Night For Loving" / "Didn't I Tell You" appeared on Great Lakes in 1982. The 2016 album contained both sides of the singles and seven previously unissued songs, presumably recorded at the same sessions.

Lou Ragland has been known to Northern and rare soul devotees in the UK for decades ever since his 1967 Amy outing "I Travel Alone" hit the decks. He had previously released a single "Never Let Me Go" / "Party At Lesters" as Lou Ragland and The Bandmasters in 1964 on Way Out, although it had been recorded a couple of years earlier. Lester presumably referring to Lester Johnson who was joint owner of Way Out with Bill Branch.

It would be another six years before his next solo single appeared in 1973 (as he was a member of Cleveland group Hot Chocolate) with "I Can't Take It" (on Co-Co Cleveland with Hot Chocolate) and then "Since You Said You'd Be Mine" (on Warner Bros.). The latter belatedly got turntable action far too many years later and with it prices have climbed, but flip that one over and listen to the killer deep soul ballad "I Didn't Mean To Leave You". A great double-sider which thankfully I've owned on UK Warner Bros. from back in the day, picked up for literally pennies (a whole 25 of them!).

The follow up single in 1974 was "What Should I Do" / "Understand Each Other" with flip being a nice modern soul tune.

His music has been respected by several scenes and the London rare groove scene picked up on his later recordings including "Love Moods" and a couple of tracks on "Is The Conveyor 'Understand Each Other'" from 1978 (which included "Since You Said You'd Be Mine" and "Understand Each Other") which now sells for big bucks on original vinyl and has subsequently been reissued several times (at least five) on vinyl, CD and digitally.

Ragland was a key player in the Cleveland soul music scene and started out as a recording engineer at Way Out Records between 1965-67. He died in Nov 2020 at his home in Las Vegas aged 78.

A little anecdote picked up from an interview with Lou Ragland is that he was The O'Jays (also from Cleveland of course as was Bobby Womack who used the Way Out studios) road manager between 1968-70 and relayed that their 1966 Mike Terry & Jack Ashford song, "I'll Never Forget You" on Imperial (possibly their finest Northern Soul tune also recorded by The Metros the following year as an album only track), was recorded at Motown who were set to sign them but their contract was sold to Imperial. Now imagine that if they had gone to Motown would we have ever had all their Philly Int. hits, or conversely I wonder how many Motown classics they may have recorded?

I've taken the opportunity of including some of the tracks mentioned above, for any who haven't already had the pleasure, as they are all available on Spotify. In fact a large portion of his back catalogue is available on a 3 disc set "I Travel Alone" released by Numero Group in 2012, digitally, on vinyl and CD.

Captain Sky [2022] - All of the Above [Creative Conceptz Entertainment] (Full Album)

Captain Sky was mentioned only a few days ago on the Yvonne Gage album post as she was a backing singer from him in the early 80s and it was mentioned that he had recently released a new single "Under Tha n-Fluence" on 6 Jun. Well his new album "All of the Above" was released yesterday (19 Jul 2022). The single is included a the opening track.

A few highlights are some of the covers, "Marvin's Message" is a jazzed up cover on "What's Going On" (a version of which he released as a single in Apr 2021),  "Look Me Up" is a cover of Blue Magic (also released as a single in Oct 2020 but a shorter version) and Bloodstone's "Natural High" (another previously released as a single but back in Aug 2010).

Captain Sky is the alter-ego of Daryl L. Cameron who is a veteran P-funk musician from Chicago who has been active since 1978 releasing four albums  between 1978-89. He was name checked by Sugarhill Gang in "Rappers Delight".

Slater Joel Feat. Michael Etheridge, Pronical Patrick Saunders, and Paul Davidson [2022] - Breakthrough [GnextLife]

Slater Joel Johnson is a gospel singer from Chesapeake, VA. He was born with Blount’s Disease, a rare disease that causes one bone to deform. He lost his mother in 2014 and after suffering depression he poured his emotions into singing. In 2017 he signed to GnextLife and released his debut single "iBELIVE". He follows it on 17 Jul 2022 with "Breakthrough".

It sound to me like it may have the same/similar bassline to Mary Jane Girls "All Night Long" in the intro, which of course was written, produced and arranged by Rick James who also played multiple instruments on the track.

Elvin Spencer [2022] - Lift This Hurt (1971) b/w You're Being Unfair [Numero Group #5704]

It's great to see this classic crossover tune from Elvin Spencer get a digital reissue today by Numero Group.

A detailed article on "Lift This Hurt" was posted in April 2020 as there are various different versions and issues of the song. The original version on Winner from 1970, a subsequent re-recorded slower version on Twinight the following year, then on Bandit (1974) and as The Chosen Few (1975) (who he was then a member of) and later still on Spencer's own label E.S. Cosy in the late 80s.

Numero Group have reissued two versions, the original faster and shorter one on Winner 1970 one and the Twinight 1971 issue. They will be posted separately as they have different B sides. I think I prefer the Twinight version although many prefer the faster Winner release.

The flip side on the Twinight issue, "You're Being Unfair", is a southern style, bluesy ballad written by Antoine Domino (aka Fats Domino) and Gerald Alexander who was a member of The Enticers which included Hank Sample as a member who also recorded it first in Jul 1970 on Jay-Walking. Curiously though on the Jay-Walking release the writers credits are to A. Domino and K. Antwine (a pseudonym?).

Elvin Spencer [2022] - Lift This Hurt (1970) b/w Don't Make This Dream Come True [Numero Group #5703]

The flip side on the Winner issue, also a Spencer written, is a fine deep soul song "Don't Make This Dream Come True".

This is the only listed release for the label which was a subsidiary of Chicago's short-lived Alteen label run by Bill Meeks (1968-70) which itself only had a handful of releases, the most sought after probably being Sunday (Williams) "Ain't Got No Problems" .

B.B. King [2022] - The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simpson Uniquity]

The next set of Paul Simpson The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions was released on Tuesday (19 Jul 2022). It's a bit of a 'left field' choice being B.B. King

Don't forget that these are only ever available from Bandcamp for a limited two week period so this one will be gone by 2 Aug!

The album consists of four tracks from "To Know You Is To Love You" (1973) and five from "Friends" (1974) both released on ABC.

Both albums were recorded at the famed Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia and produced by Dave Crawford who wrote the Candi Staton's hit "Young Hearts Run Free". He also contributed to the writing of most of the tracks although  "To Know You Is To Love You" was written by Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright, "Baby I'm Yours" by Van McCoy (first recorded by Barbara Lewis in 1965) and "Respect Yourself" by Luther Ingram and Sir Mack Rice (a US hit for Staple Singers in 1971 (one of their biggest) but, as often the case, Robert Palmer, The Kane Gang and Bruce Willis had UK pop chart success with it and the Staple Singers didn't!).

1973 - To Know You Is To Love You *
1974 - Friends **

Track Listing:
1 - Friends (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 06:47 **
2 - To know you is to love you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 08:33 *
3 - Philadelphia (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37 **
4 - I like to live the love (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 04:46 *
5 - Respect yourself (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:14 *
6 - Who are you (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 05:37 *

Ali McGuirk [2022] - All Back [Signature Sounds Recordings]

Ali McGuirk from Boston, MA, has a new album, "Til It’s Gone", due on 16 Sep 2022 and has released the first single from it "All Back" today  (20 Jul 2022). The album is available to pre-order (digital, vinyl and CD) from Bandcamp.

Her only other listed releases are an album "Slow Burn" (2017) and a single from last year (29 Jun) which is a cover of Bobby Womack's 1971 single "That's The Way I Feel About Cha" (from "Communication") which is certainly not for the purists as it is a completely different arrangement to Womack's. It was co-written by Womack with Joe 'Don't It Make You Feel Funky' Hicks and John Grisby.

The promo material states:
"On her Signature Sounds debut "Til It’s Gone", Ali McGuirk delivers a sublime set of songs that pairs her trademark soul sound with rootsy turns and raw rock ‘n’ roll detours. McGuirk co-produced Til It’s Gone with Jonah Tolchin (a star singer-songwriter in his own right) and a set of session legends: Little Feat guitarist/mandolinist Fred Tackett, organist Larry Goldings (James Taylor, Norah Jones), singer Valerie Pinkston (Ray Charles, Luther Vandross), percussionist Lenny Castro (Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder). They provided the astounding chops, but the true magic of the album comes from McGuirk’s singular voice as both singer and songwriter. The nine tracks run from intimate introspection to wider meditations on oppression and justice, from tough r&b and tender soul to big rock guitar and twangy folk. And McGuirk's voice – bold, buttery, spellbinding – carries each song to the next til they’re gone".

Bill Harris [1975] - Am I Cold, Am I Hot [RCA Victor #PB-10520]

Inspired by a witty remark left on facebook in response to Roger Williams complaining (tongue-in-cheek) that he was 'freezing' yesterday after the heatwave of up to 40C in the last couple of days.

Bill Harris' modern soul gem "Am I Cold, Am I Hot" from 1975 written, arranged and produced by Van McCoy. The comment was 'make up your mind' with a link to a YouTube clip to Bill Harris' song, which reminds me of yet another modern soul gem, "Why Don't You Make Up Your Mind" a 1981 album only track (until it was reissued on 7" in 2020 by Expansion) by Peabo Bryson which was posted when released by Expansion.

The only other recording listed for Harris is the equally good "Uptown Saturday Night" from 1974 (produced by Van McCoy) which was the title track from an action comedy blaxploitation movie which starred Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and Harry Belafonte. It also got spins on Northern Soul dancefloors and actually got a UK release on Warner Bros..

GarciaWalker&Durrell [2021] - Praying For Rain [Soul Intention]

One for the farmers, gardeners and fire fighters. I don't know what it was like for the rest of the UK but it tipped down with rain here for a few hours last night, and most welcome it was too, clearing the air.

The title track from GarciaWalker&Durrell's superb album last year (and SoulStrutter top 3 album for 2021) "Praying For Rain", any excuse to re-post! I invite you to revisit the full album to remind you how good it was.
