Artis Boris Feat. Rita Ray [2023] - Can You Dance? [Funk Embassy Records]

A new dance oriented single out of the Funk Embassy camp.  You will recall Rita Ray recently released her sophomore album "Life Of Its Own". She shows us a different side, which shouldn't come as a big surprise as her debut album contained one or two dance oriented disco tracks.

She features on this single "Can You Dance?" with a new name to us Artis Boris. who is a new signee to the label and is a virtuoso jazz pianist from Latvia. This is the first song from an upcoming debut album "Easy Living".

Rudy De Anda [2023] - WYD [Karma Chief Records]

The lead single from Rudy De Anda's new album "Closet Botanist" (to be released by Colemine's Karma Chief imprint on vinyl and CD  on 28 Apr '23) is "WYD" released on Tuesday (7 Mar).

Rudy was born in L.A. to Mexican parents spending most of his formative years in Long Beach. He tells us that the title of the song is jab at Gen Z and the acronym culture that leaves a sense of lack of lexicon, and the intro synth lead is an ode to the West Coast G-funk sound of the '90s that he grew up on. 

The album was recorded the Electric Deluxe recording studio in Austin, TX, owned and operated by Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas) who helped produce and engineer the album.

I'm not quite sure personally if this 'qualifies' as soul music, perhaps the Yacht Soul lovers will embrace it?

Adanna Duru [2023] - NAPPY HOUR [MNRK Records] (Full EP)

Orange County, CA, native Adanna Duru was a contestant on season 3 of The Voice in 2012 as a teenager (15/16). In one of the rounds she was paired with Michelle Brooks-Thompson who has featured several times on these pages over the last year or two. They sang Beyonce's "Crazy In Love" together. Adanna lost out to Michelle. Not deterred, Adanna later featured on American Idol in 2015 where she reached the Top 10. She performed on the show with Janelle Monáe, another artist who has recently released a single in Feb "Float". 

After three singles in 2022 and 2023, she has released her debut six track EP "NAPPY HOUR" which includes all three singles. She is a self-proclaimed R&B Afrobeat Pop artist so the material may not be The standout track, for me, is "Stay In" which features Leven Kali who has just featured on Adi Oasis' latest single "Naked". and released a four tack EP "Let It Rain" last Nov.

Carlos Abril, Amelia Rose & 9ick [2023] - Let Me Know [Self Released]

London's Amelia Rose (Dyson) has featured here a couple of times already this year with other collaborative singles i.e. "Falling Down" with cocobana and "Where's This Going?" with Relyae in January and appeared on a four track EP "Phases" with another previous single "Right Time" and a new song "4AM"  last month which I think is a full album building.

She has another collaborative single, "Let Me Know", with Carlos Abril and 9ick  out today (10 Mar '23).

Sunshine Anderson [2023] - Heard It All Before [Warner Music Group & X5 Music Group]

A reissue of four mixes of Sunshine Anderson's "Heard It All Before". It consists of the album version, a radio edit and two remixes, E-Smoove House Filter Mix and Ben Watt Lazy Dog Mix. All mixes were originally released in 2001 with the two remixes on a 12" titled "Heard It All Before (Dance Remixes)" and the other two versions on the standard 12". 

Sunshine Jocelyn Sian Anderson was born in Winston-Salem, NC in Oct 1974. She was spotted humming in a queue at the university (from where she obtained a degree in Criminal Justice) by a friend of Mike City (A&R and VP of Soulife).

After graduating she moved to Washington, D.C. but eventually relocated to L.A. where she worked with City on her debut album and was managed by Macy Gray. Her debut single, resulted in the release of her first album "Your Woman" which rose to #2 on the R&B chart and sold over 800k copies certifying it gold.

She released two further albums "Sunshine at Midnight" (2006) and "The Sun Shines Again" (2010) but not a great deal since, just a handful of singles that have mainly been reissues/remixes of earlier songs.

Sunshine is still performing and in fact has a show tonight at House Of Goats, Waterbury, CT.

Steve Aggasild [2023-03-10] - Soul Struttin' [Soul Music Radio]

This Friday's "Soul Struttin'" show from Steve Aggasild on the brand new radio station Soul Music Radio broadcast on 10th Mar 2023 between 21:00-23:00 GMT.

The show follows a similar format to his previous shows where Steve digs through his music library to bring you some classic oldies whilst also showcasing many of the best new releases around, although new and old are now intermingled with roghy 35 mins oldies followed by 25 mins of newies in each hour.

Steve now does a show Fri 21:00-23:00 (GMT) on Soul Music Radio and two shows a week on SOTAR Sun 20:00-22:00 (GMT) and Wed 20:00-22:00 (GMT). If you have yet to listen then please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree.

P.D. Williams [2023] - Funk Love and Soul [Self Released]

An album titled "Funk Love And Soul" which I believe may be the debut release from P.D. Williams (Paul Daniel) from Richmond, VA, is available on Bandcamp only but will get a wider release on 24 Mar.

Williams composed, wrote, arranged and produced all songs except "9 To 5 (Life Is Going No Where)" which was co-written by Trilla t and Hassan Washington. The album was recorded at Elephant Ear Studios in Richmond. Williams also plays several instruments on the album including bass, guitar, drums, keyboards, piano and percussion.

As it says in the title, it's quite a funky affair and gets, a bit rock-like in places, with the opening, title, track "Funk Love and Soul" along "Let's Talk About Life" and the very Stevie Wonder'ish "Dream" standing out on first listen and "Pressing On" may be a grower.

We were directed to the album by Roger Williams who in turn was informed of it by Kevin Oxberry who played "Dream" on his The Friday Rotation show last night. So thanks to both.

Marion Javius [2023] - Waiting In The Wings [Athens Of The North #ATH133]

A week before it's release we posted the latest reissue from Athens Of The North by Marion Javius with two mixes for "Waiting In The Wings" from Bandcamp. At the time no sound files were available so a YouTube clip of the original version was posted pending release. It has now been released with sound files available for both sides.

It comes with the original 1978 mix on Encore Records on the flip and a new ECLA Mix which has been rebuilt from master tapes. The reason for the remix has a humorous backstory which you can read on the label's Bandcamp page, I won't steal the thunder. 

It seems to be the only release for the Houston, TX, based label and artist, under that name at least, but I wonder if it's the same singer who recorded two singles on Roxbury in '73 and '75 as Marion Jarvis?

VA [2023] - Love Is the Message: The Sound of Philadelphia Vol. 3 [United Souls #PIR 5003]

Following the release of two 8 CD box sets of Philadelphia International 70s albums "Get On Board The Soul Train: The Sound Of Philadelphia Volume 1" (May '21) and "Satisfaction Guaranteed: The Sound Of Philadelphia Volume 2" (Nov '21), United Souls' (Snapper Music Ltd) series of box sets continues in April '23 with the third volume "Love Is the Message: The Sound of Philadelphia Vol. 3" due on 7 April.  

The series, we are told, will consist of 15 volumes covering all studio albums released by the label, each containing 8 albums on individual CDs. They will be released in chronological order. That's 120 albums in total by our reckoning.

All albums have been remastered from original tapes and as a bonus each set includes a 12" single, this one has MFSB "T.S.O.P." paired with Trammps "Stop And Think". I suspect that these 12 inchers may become future collector's items.

The third volume contains the following albums which are good value for money as the total cost equates to £6.25 per album. I believe that they are only available on CD i.e. no digital downloads.
