The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 27 (Aug 2021 Wk 31) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Aug 2021 Wk 31)
I no particular order other than tempo.

Very few albums/EP released this week and nothing of major significance, but there were some good rather than great tunes released this week.

The SoulStrutter Selection of the Week came down to a choice between Cherise's new single "Remedy" and the debut 'album' from Anthony Lofties "Sincerely, My Fault". I put quotes around album as, although it is ten tracks, there are only really four tracks as there are three interludes and three instrumental versions of the four 'main' tracks, but the four 'main' tracks are all pretty good especially "I'm So Sorry and "Go Back". So, as it's his debut, I've gone with it as this week's selection as new artists making great music need as much as exposure as possible.

An honorary mention should also go the Char Elizabeth's EP "In2Me" with three very good tracks "I'll Never Know", "Still Love" and "Rock With Me"

To be 'brutally' honest (and realistic) I don't really 'expect' any of the above to fare well in any of the soul charts as they are all ballads, but this is timeless, 'real', soul music, no gimmicks. However, I would be delighted to be proved wrong as otherwise artists will stop making this kind of music and we will be subjected only to 'commercial' music proven to 'sell', which will probably entail the mandatory rap injections!

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 20 (Aug 2021 Wk 31)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples (Aug 2021 Wk 31). (In no particular order).

There weren't sufficient covers etc. to make up a dozen this week so I've added a few tracks that I've only just found this week that are a few weeks old to make up the twelve.

Covers from Kenny Kirby (Donny Hathaway), The Sunburst Band (Jon Lucien), Teddy Douglas (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes) and I've included a new version of The Realm's "On My Mind" as a cover by DJ-SLT-UK.

Remixes from Ramus Faber, Lamone and Brooklyn Groove Machine although I've had to include a previous remix (London Radio Mix) as the latest mixes by Yvonne Turner are not (yet?) available on Spotify. Listen to the latest version here.

A couple of reissued tracks by Fountain Delano from 2014.

To make up the dozen I've included the following three tracks, Sugar Rainbow, as I'm pretty sure this is an old song that has been just released, another track from Kenny Kirby's album "Playin' The Cracks" released in April, Faye Maena released 20 Jul.

The Global Soul Chart - 7th Aug 2021 - The Essential 5 & The Breakers

This week's 'Essential 5' and 'The Breakers' played by Franklin Sinclair on the Global Soul Chart Show which is aired between 5pm-7pm every Saturday on Global Soul Radio.

He plays the Essential 5 at the start of the show, whilst The Breakers are interspersed between chart entries.

A podcast of the show is posted each week on Mixcloud or listen on Global Soul Chart post.

The Essential 5

No Essential 5 this week, but a bit of success from last week as Samm Henshaw "Grow" and Eva Saturn "Holding U Down" / "Fly" from "A Saturn Return" EP are two from last week's Essential 5 that have both entered the chart this week .

The Breakers

As there was no Essential 5 some extra breakers this week totalling twelve. Ten of the twelve already posted. Two of last week's breakers have entered the chart this week. Durand Jones & The Indications - Private Space and Elijah Blake  Feat. Trinidad James - Dream.

I've added the ratings that were applied to each track/album when posted, and as you can see they were all posted within days of release.

The Global Soul Chart - 7th Jul 2021

Eight new entries this week, all of which have already been posted. D.Folks and Jewell Booker remain at #2 & #3 respectively and, as suspected last week with the advantage of her new album "See Me", Leela James leap frogs over them from #4 to the top.

The big surprise was Tygressa dropping like a stone from #1 to #13 and D Mills dropping out of chart completely from #8.

None of my recent tips have yet made it into the chart except for Samm Henshaw who was the second highest new entry at #8 (beaten by Angela Rose who's album "Rose To The Occasion" entered at  #5) and Durand Jones & The Indications who I suggested last week was a certainty. Also, as suspected, no entry for GarciaWalker&Durrell, but there's time yet.

My current fav for this week, which I will be pleasantly surprised if it gets in the chart, is the new single from Cherise "Remedy", posted today but released on 30 Jul, and also a couple of deep ballad tracks on Anthony Lofties' album "Sincerely, My Fault" i.e. "!'m So Sorry" and "Go Back" are excellent and real 'growers'.

Losers:
D Mills, Adeline Feat. Joshua J, Snoh Aalegra, Dawkins & Dawkins, Kadeem Tyrell Feat. Omar, Mike De'Cole, MELONYX, Jerome Thomas

Highest Risers:
Portrait (+6), Sidibe  (+5), Regi Myrix Feat. NexXxUP (+5)

Biggest Fallers:
Tygressa  (-11), Hil St. Soul & Noel Gourdin (-10), The Realm (-10)

Swindle Feat. Poppy Ajudha & Daley [2021] - Darkest Hour [BMG]

South Londoner Swindle (aka Cameron Palmer) is one of the UK's most respected producers. He is due to release his latest album on 29 Oct 2021 "The New World".

The lead single from the album "Darkest Hour" was released yesterday (6 Aug 2021) which features Poppy Ajudha (a south London jazz singer) & Daley who recently appeared on Reuben James's "Tunnel Vision".

Here's quite an interesting documentary (18 mins) of making his last album "No More Normal" which was performed live.

Cherise [2021] - Remedy [LAB Records]

Now here we have some real quality. This is the lead single from a forthcoming EP "Remedy" due for release on 15 Oct 2021. It was released as a single last week (30 Jul 2021). The song was written by Cherise Adams-Burnett & Ed Black (who I assume to be edbl)

I can only find one other release from her from last year (31 Jan 2020) which was a four track EP "Paradise" (title track posted below). However, her SoundCloud page has songs going back twenty years which I found odd to say the least as she is only 26! The other Cherise on the so-called 'cheriseofficial' page is a completely different singer!

There are, however, a couple of other recordings from her under her full name (Cherise Adams-Burnet) but these are what I would term operatic jazz tunes. She also appeared as a featured artist on Nubiyan Twist's "Freedom Fables" album last year on a track titled "Tittle Tattle" (which jazz/funkers may appreciate).

Cherise was awarded Jazz FM’s Vocalist of the in 2019 and Vocalist of the Year by the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2020.

This is what a write-up on Pizza Express website for her performance there 16 Nov 2017:
"Still just 22 years of age, Cherise Adams-Burnett is quickly becoming recognised a fiercely talented vocalist and musician. Since graduating from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, Cherise has been invited to perform at many of the UK’s most prestigious venues and festivals ranging from The BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall to Love Supreme Jazz Festival. Her performance style fuses her passion for soul and neo-soul with a great appreciation and understanding of the great jazz vocalists. Her unique delivery has won plaudits from audiences and critics and she has already been invited to collaborate with highly established artists and groups including Nu-Civilisation Orchestra, Clare Teal, China Moses and Ashley Henry."

Lion Babe [2021] - Rainbow Child [Self Released] (Full Album)

Lion Babe released their third album "Rainbow Child" yesterday (6 Aug 2021). It contains their last three singles "Get Up" (Jun), "Signs" (May), "Frida Kahlo" (Apr)  along with two singles released from the album on same day as album release "It's Okay" and "Rainbows"

Of the tracks not already released as singles, the best are "Rainbows" although it contains a rap from Ghostface Killah, and "Home" which another tune that sound like it uses The Ambassadors "I Really Love You" intro sample! I'm pretty sure there's a sample that I vaguely recognise in "Rainbows" as well!

Nuwamba [2021] - Love Ase [Bornsoulful Entertainment]

Nuwamba (aka Demetress Cook) is a Fort Worth native (of Indigenous American - Dominican Heritage) whose sound fuses African drumming, Latin rhythms and hip hop beats with indie soul R&B vocals.

His latest album "Love Ase" was released yesterday (6 Aug 2021) and includes some nice tracks. The better tracks on first listen include "To The Light", "Unusual",  and mellower ones such as "Enuf Is Enuf", "Waiting", "Make It Through" and "I Wonder", so plenty of good tracks to make it a worthwhile listen!

My personal favourites are the deep ballads "Enuf Is Enuf" and "Waiting" along with the stepper "To The Light".

His debut album "Above The Water" was released in 2005 and as far as I can tell this will be his third album (or fourth if you include a remixed edition of his second album "Heavens").
