Shirley Brown - Woman To Woman v Barbara Mason - From This Woman To You

Shirley Brown's 1974 classic deep soul song "Woman To Woman" (#1 R&B #22 Hot 100) was probably my baptism into the world of deep soul. The song spawned a series of 'answer' songs over several years. Barbara Mason had a hit with "From His Woman To You" (#3 R&B #28 Hot 100) later the same year.

In 1977 Shirley responded with "You Ain't Woman Enough to Take My Man" and Mason followed with " I Am Your Woman, She Is Your Wife" in 1978.

I'm pretty sure there were others, that don't immediately spring to mind.

I found a pretty grainy video of Shirley Brown performing the song on Soul Train, presumably, in 1974 and another of Barbara Mason's first answer song from 1975.

Apparently "Woman To Woman" was initially offered to Inez Foxx (who was signed to Stax's Volt subsidiary) who turned it down because she didn't want to do the spoken intro rap.

It has, surprisingly, been covered very few times, by country singer Barbara Mandrell  in 1977, another country version by Joanna Field 1982, Jewell in 1994 featured in the soundtrack for "Murder Was The Case" movie (video below) and a pretty good version by Jaguar Wright in 2005 (as Woman 2 Woman).

I've updated the original post with a ten minutes long live version by Shirley Brown in 1998 with Denise  LaSalle in a show billed as 'Divas Of The Delta', the full show is here. ("Woman To Woman" starts around 40 minutes in).

Carl Weathers [1981] - You Ought To Be With Me [Mirage #WTG 3834]

You will know of Carl Weathers even if you are not aware of it as he played Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies as well as being an American footballer. He released a one-off single in 1981 on Mirage and what a beauty it is! He even had a hand in writing it along with D.J. (Dwight) Emile who wrote for Black Ice and Eddie Horan.

"You Ought To Be Here With Me" reached #71 on the R&B charts in autumn 1981.

If you have listened to the Cornell CC Carter interview by Gary Van Den Bussche posted recently then you will have heard this played before the interview commenced.

Janice [1975] - Love On The Line [Fantasy #F9492]

Another track heard on GVB's show last week is this killer deep soul tune from Janice (Barnett) recorded in 1975 on her self-titled, and only, album called "Love On The Line".

The album is not expensive and fairly easy to find but the track was also issued digitally on a compilation in 2011 "Steppin Across the USA, Vol. 13".

Prince [2007] - Somewhere Here On Earth [NRG Records]

As you are probably well aware, a new album from Prince "Welcome To America" was released  at the end of July.  In that post I stated that I wasn't the greatest fan of his music as it was very funk/rock/pop oriented.

The track in question is from his 2007 album "Planet Earth" titled "Somewhere Here On Earth", simply 'stunning', showing his deeper and jazzier side.

Daryl Hall [1996] - All By Myself [Untied #CD128]

As it's pretty quiet on the new release front I thought I'd feature a few forgotten, or even in some cases unknown, great tracks which I've heard recently.

The first is from Philly blue-eyed soulman Daryl Hall with a track from his 1996 album "Can't Stop Dreaming" "All By Myself" played by Gary Van Den Bussche last week which was a new one to me, or I certainly don't recall ever hearing it before, so perhaps the same with you?

By the way, if you didn't already know, Gary does a two hour daily lunchtime show on Starpoint radio between 11am-1pm where he mixes it up with brand new releases and classic soul tunes like this, along with some great under played deep soul tunes.

The cover design used for the digital release is the reissue cover by Liquid 8 which is different to the original US release on Untied.

Reel People [2021] - The Remixes (2021 Edition) [Self Released] (Part Album)

In 2014 Reel People celebrated over a decade of making music with a collection Reel People - The Remixes showcasing their work. Now in 2021 they are presenting an update of it with the 2021 edition.

Reel People is a UK collective of producers Mike Patto, Oli Lazarus and Toni Economides who collaborate with many other musicians and singers to deliver their projects.

The compilation contains 30 tracks Joining the dots from Neo Soul through to Broken Beat and Deep Soulful House including remixes of artists such as Zo!, Phonte, Incognito, Tony Momrelle, Mousse T., Leon Ware, Portia Moniquee, Cece Peniston, Maysa, Terri Walker & Angela Johnson.

The compilation is set for release on 19 Nov 2021, but a handful of tracks are available to listen to on BandCamp where you can also pre-order.

The Mousse T. track featuring Sharon Phillips (who also featured on that great track by Rob Hardt & Ferry Ultra earlier this year) is particularly good.

Syl Johnson [2021] - Different Strokes / Is It Because I'm Black [Numero Group #ES-073]

Numero Group has digitally reissued two tracks from Chicago's Syl Johnson today (18 Oct 2021), they have already been released on vinyl.

"Different Strokes", along with The Winston's "Amen' is on of the most sampled records in the history of hip-hop which is perhaps why it has been reissued? It was originally released on Twilight label in 1967. The flip  is "Is It Because I'm Black", which was posted in May last year along with Ken Boothe's version as it has been getting spins at Sunday soul sessions, was also released on Twinight in 1969 after the label was forced to change it's name from Twilight.

It was also recorded by several other reggae artists. I found a live clip of Nick Thomas performing it live in the 70s, although I'm not sure that he ever actually recorded it?
