Don Gadi [2023] - Sad [By Any Means Music]

Massachusetts raised, San Digeo resident hip-hopper, wordsmith, vocalist, and producer Don Gadi (Daniel Cole Delgado McCormack) released "Bad" on 2 Jun and has since released another single and a four track EP "Tornado Shelter".

This one is the best of the bunch and we would assume is sample based and we hear hints of Bill Withers, so whether or not it is based on one of his songs we're not sure?

Mama Terra [2023] - The Summoned [Acid Jazz] (Full Album)

A new signing to Acid Jazz is Mama Terra which is the brainchild of Glaswegian pianist and composer Marco Cafolla. As alluded to when we posted their last single and live videos for it and two other tracks earlier this week, their debut album "The Summoned", written and demoed during lockdown, is released today.

Three tracks have already been premiered  "Ruptura" (17 Mar), "A Mind Supreme" (28 Apr), both free jazz instrumentals, and "Last Hour" (13 Jun) featuring the vocals of Rachel Lightbody. (Live videos of all three below)

Cafolla plays piano and bass keys and used hip hop and modern Jazz drummer samples to create a rhythm section and, wanting to add an authentic N.Y.C. vibe to the album, sent the stems to Orangefish Studio in Brooklyn, NYC where bass (Derek Neivergelt), drums (Evan Pazner) and trumpet solos (Jeremy Pelt) were recorded live to tape.

Along with Glasgow musicians Konrad Wiszniewski (sax / flute), Mikey Owers (trombone),  Cameron Jay (flugelhorn), and vocalist Rachel Lightbody, Cafollo & co. recorded their parts along to the N.Y.C. stems at Glo Worm Studios, Glasgow.

They tell us that "The Summoned" is a conceptual journey through life and the universe which takes cues from Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane and Erykah Badu. It's predominantly contemporary, free jazz instrumental and is available digitally, on CD and vinyl.

Theo Forsett [2023] - Love At Your Fingatips [Yon Ti Entertainment] (Full Album)

On Tuesday we posted a debut single from Theo Forsett, "Love At Your Fingatips", and we said he had a debut album of the same name forthcoming, but what we didn't realise is that it was released on the same day.

Born and raised in Bartow, FL, he began singing in the church choir at the age of six. He studied the arts perfecting his singing, dancing, and acting skills while performing in local talent shows and then moved to L.A. to further his career where he registered at Fairfax High School and joined the music department and met classmates and music producers DeYon Dobson and Lance Vantile Whitfield who are both involved in his latest project. 

He sang BGVs for Diana Ross, Little Richard and Eddie Murphy and was also getting noticed as a promising actor and landed his first TV pilot and film, in "The Hero".

His writing ability was later recognised and he was contracted to write a screenplay for Warner Bros and proceeded to work on a movie "Back N The Day" and then "Black Beach".

A bit of further digging unearthed that had had roles in several well know US TV series in the 80s / 90s such as Hill St. Blues, Cagney & Lacey, Chips and T.J. Hooker amongst several others. 

After taking a hiatus from music to focus on his acting and writing career, he has released his debut album, "Love at Your Fingatips", and the title track as the lead single.

We are informed that the single was originally recorded by The Gap Band on an album "Ain't Nothin' But A Party" in 1995 and then again in 2001 on an album of the same name (i.e. "Love At Your Fingatips").

Orpheus [2023] - Intergalactic Rhodemap [iNViSiOn ReCoRDS] (Full EP)

Those in the know will of course already know that Orpheus is the instrumental musical alter ego of Jarrod Lawson. He released an album, "Visions", under the moniker in Nov 2019 which was released on vinyl via Izipho Soul in Jan 2020.

He has released a six track EP "Intergalactic Rhodemap" on 1 Jul.

Gabriels [2023] - Angels & Queens (Deluxe) [Atlas Artists] (Full Album)

Back in Sep '22 Gabriels released "Angels & Queens Part 1" which consisted of just 7 tracks. Today they release a 'Deluxe' edition which extends it to a whopping 26 tracks and includes live recordings (five from Glastonbury (25 Jun 2022) and one of Ben E. King's "Spanish Harlem" at London's Maida Vale studios in 2021) and also their breakthrough song "Love And Hate In A Different Time" along with a Greg Wilson & Ché Wilson Remix (there have been several remixes of the song).

An audio (only) recording of their Glastonbury performance is on YouTube.

Without checking fully, we suspect the album includes most, if not all, of their material to date except various other mixes of "Love & Hate".

Their sound may be a acquired taste but it can't be denied that they have their own distinctive and unique, gospel inspired, style and consist of lead singer Jacob Lusk (who appeared on American Idol season 10 in 2011) and producers Ari Balouzian and Ryan Hope. Formed in L.A. in 2016, they released their debut single 'Loyalty' in 2018 which was used in a Prada advert.

In Dec 2020 they released a 5 track EP "Love And Hate In A Different Time" which included their first two singles "Loyalty" and "In Loving Memory" as well as "Blind" and the title track and another song "Professional" that hasn't been released as a single.

The digital album is very reasonably priced at £10.99 for 26 tracks. However, you can obtain it on CD for only £9.99 (plus postage of course) from their website.

If you are in or around London between 4pm and 7pm today (7 Jul) they are holding an album signing at Somerset House, the former home of the dreaded HMRC, on the south side of The Strand.

The doors are open 4-7pm and the band are expected to do a signing 4:00-5:45pm. Brand new merchandise and copies of "Angels & Queens" will also be available to purchase.

Please note that it takes place in the Lancaster Room at Somerset House, entry is via New Wing Entrance which is next to Waterloo Bridge, not the main entrance.
