Nottingham duo Georgia Copeland and Nadia Latoya, otherwise known as Melonyx, have come a long way since we first discovered them and posted
their double-single "Melanin Queens" / "Energy" on day of release (4 May 2021). It was titled "Black Elixir" and was a prelude for what was to come a month later in the form of a six
track EP.
They have been snapped up by one of the leading labels for contemporary
soul music in the UK, Brighton's Tru Thoughts, who proceeded to release a
six track EP "Black Elixir" at the end of Jun 2020 which contained a good lovers rock/neo soul
interpretation of The Stylistics' "You Make Me Feel Brand New" (live video below as a bonus). Note that in July the EP was released as
an
extended edition on (Bandcamp
only) which included instrumental and acapella versions of most of the
tracks.
A slew of singles have ensued (and they have featured on several other
artists' recordings, most recently last week on SANITY's "Late Night" with Blue Lab Beats) and today they release their debut album "Soul Glow" which is available digitally and on CD from Bandcamp. The album is produced by fellow Nottingham artist Joe Buhdah.
It incudes their last three singles "Made To Suffer", "At The Door" and "Solar Power" (very similar in sound to Adi Oasis) along with, of course, "Melanin Queens" and "Energy", "Ujjani" and the title track from the "Black Elixir" EP. The remaining seven tracks are all all new.
The opening, and title, track "Soul Glow" sets the scene for a very good debut album.
