Starpoint Soul Chart 19th April 2021

Eight new entries into the Starpoint chart, all previously posted here except for Cool Notes 2021 Remix as it's a housed up set of remixes - not soul to my ears, although the George B Remix isn't bad! I'm finding all these rehashes of earlier hits becoming rather tedious!

Carmen Jackson [2021] - Where Do We Go from Here [Friends & Family Entertainment]

This one came out of the blocks back on 22 Jan 2021 but is featured in this week's Starpoint UK Soul Chart Breakers, so I thought it was about time It was posted.

It's a pleasent soul/jazz track from Carmen Jackson who I can find nothing about.

NOTE the sound quality on the YT clip is not great so best to listen via Spotify link, but I thought I'd included the visuals.

Alexander Morris [2021] - Isn't She A Pretty Girl [Izipho Soul #ZP66 / Angel Dove]

The new single from Alexander Morris, and follow up to 'Love Is Knockin', has been released digitally on BandCamp by Izipho Soul.

It is a fantastic version of Ronnie McNeir's classic Northern Soul double-sider originally released on De-To in 1966 which has this side along with 'Sitting In My Class'. A better Detroit double-sider would be hard to find, and this release on original vinyl is now well into four figures and approaching £2k .. if you were fortunate to find one!

Alexander Morris, a current member of the Four Tops, does a fine and authentic, rendition. The musicianship is second to none as they are the same musicians who currently back the Four Tops and The Temptations led by Earl Van Dyke Jr.

Ronnie McNeir is also currently a member of the Four Tops and gifted the song to Alexander to record. The other members of the current Four Tops line-up are original member Abdul 'Duke' Fakir and Lawrence Payton Jr. the son of original member Lawrence Payton.

I contacted Patrick Biggerstaff at Izipho Soul to find out more about the two Alexander Morris releases, and he informed me that they are scheduled for release on vinyl later in the year, with a tentative date of August due to the current climate. The first release will be 'Love Is Knockin' flipped with 'Isn't She A Pretty Girl', so keep your eyes on Izipho Soul website for pre-orders as I would expect this combination of sides to sell out quickly as both are top quality sides.

Angel Dove is owned by Marlin McNichols who notified the world of the demise of Lou Wilson (Edwards) via his facebook, which I posted earlier today.

Corey Stone Paxton is a former member of Rick James' Stone City Funk Band. His latest single was released 31 Mar 2021 sounding a bit like Stevie Wonder to my ears on this track.

Sweet & Innocent & The Memphis Mustangs [2021] - Cry Love [Numero Group] (Full EP)

Numero Group has reissued an EP (digital only) of four rare sides by Sweet & Innocent & The Memphis Mustangs. They were originally released on Memphis label Active in 1972 and 1973. Sweet & Innocent were Rubye James and Linda Royston.

'Express Your Love' and 'Cry Love' are early 70s sweet soul ballads, along with a funky/crossover tune 'I Don't Know What You're Full Of''. The EP is completed by an instrumental 'Express Your Love Theme' by The Memphis Mustangs.

Active was owned by Ron and Sari Bledsoe. Only four releases are listed for the label, these two, plus one by a group called Epic and another by First Company. Seven of the eight sides on the label were written by George Hines and Willie (Toast) McClain, the latter co-wrote 'Just An Illusion' released on Charm City in 1983 by Toast (so could McClain be a member of Toast?).

R.I.P. - Lou Wilson (Edwards) (1934 - 17/04/2021)

Marlin McNichols (a writer/producer at Atlanta's Aware label and now CEO of Angel Dove who are responibe for the releases by Alexander Morris) announced on his facebook page on  Saturday (17 Apr 2021) the passing of Lou Wilson (Loise Edward Wilson) aged 87.

He was an original member of Wade Flemons & The Newcomers who had a R&B hit in 1958 with 'Here I Stand' on Vee Jay.

Flemons released several solo 45s, two of which were played on NS scene ('That Other Place' (Vee Jay 1964) and 'Jeanette' (Ramsel 1968) still played to this day). He was a writing partner with Maurice White (who at the time was a session muscian at Vee Jay) and Don Whitehead who later won a contract with Capitol and formed the group Salty Peppers in 1969 and released two 45s before becoming EWF, who Flemons was a member of until around 1973. He died of prostrate cancer 20 years later in 1993 aged 53 without any further (known) recordings.

Wilson had a solo release in 1969 'This Love Is Getting Deeper'/ 'We Need To Get Together' as Lou Wilson & The Living Ends which was released as a promo on Kent subsidiary Supreme and then on Big 8 as Lou Wilson, Charlou & The The Living Ends.

He will be remembered by the Northern Soul scene for his Blackpool Mecca classic released as Lou Edwards & Today's People 'Talkin' 'Bout Poor Folks Thinkin' 'Bout My Folks' released on Columbia in 1972 which was the flip side to 'I Got To Be Me'.

He released three albums on Detroit's Crew label 'On The Right' 1995, 'True Blues' 1997 followed by another 'Blues Grooves' on his own Frontline label in 2005.

In 2009 Soul Junction released a 45 containing two sides released on his 2008 CD album 'Money Talk', 'Settle Down' / 'Around The Corner From Love'.
