JKabel [2023] - Beige Living Room [Self Released] (Full Album Samples)

Jared Kabel Holloway aka JKABEL (pronounced Jay-Kay-Bul) is originally from Florida. He learnt to play the piano at a young age and then went to college to study acting which led to him touring with a stage play in 2005 for three years. In the noughties he toured with Angie Stone, Dave Hollister, Christopher Williams, Vanessa Williams and Latoya London, amongst others. When that ended in 2008 he started writing songs and relocated to Minnesota in 2013. He released his debut R&B single "Do What You Wanna Do" in 2016.

His latest album "Biege Living Room" is set for release on Valentines Day (14 Feb 2023) which will be his sixth album since his first in 2020. All his music (albums and singles) are available directly from his website and the usual digital platforms.

Beige Living Room (2023)
The Gospel According to J.Kabel (2021)
Insanity (2021)
Highway Music (2020)

Two of the tracks from the new album have been released as singles as teasers, "My Mind Stays On Jesus" (28 Oct '22) and "Discernment" (7 Dec '22).

Those who have listened to his music will agree that JKABEL has a distinctive sound which is soulful, contemporary gospel.

At the time of the release of his last album last June we mentioned that we had been blessed with some excellent albums at that time (such as Michon Young "LLE Vol 3 Conversation Piece", Blue Soul Ten "This Is Worth It", Mica Millar "Heaven Knows", Tyra LeVone  "Chronicles Of Life") and again the competition is fierce with new albums this weekend from Will Downing, October London and Raheem DeVaughn as well as recent offerings from Kyle Jason and Rodney Stith and a few others to contend with.

Yet again, it's a consistent set and tricky trying to choose standouts, but apart from the two singles, the ones that resonate on first listen are "Unnecessary", "Love Againand "Frienmies" but that is likely to change with further listens as this is an album you need to listen to again and again.

Soulpersona [2023] - Soulacoaster (The Bonus Tracks) [Digisoul]

Last week Soulpersona released a remastered version of the debut album "Soulacoaster" with bonus tracks on Bandcamp "Soulacoaster (The 2023 Remastered Edition + Bonus Tracks)".

As of yesterday, "The Bonus Tracks" have been bundled together and are available separately on the main digital platforms.

It included three great tracks "What's Good?" and "Showya" which features Darien Dean (whose voice I can't help thinking reminds me of Rahsaan Patterson), along with, for me, the clear standout "Drippin' Soul" featuring Katie Leone whose voice also reminds me a of someone,  Teena Marie?

Sophia Galaté [2023] - Options [The Nucleus]

Sophia Galaté is from L.A. and studied music in Chicago moving back to L.A. when she graduated. She released her debut single "Body" in Sep. 2020 and followed it with two more ("Superstar Interlude" (cover of Usher 2004) and "Love Me") before releasing her debut album "SOFIA" on 19 Nov 2021 which includes her first and third singles.

It's a classy soulful jazz set which oozes quality and shows hints of her stated influences D'Angelo and Amy Winehouse. She wrote all the songs, some with the assistance of Sherren Oliva and others with Gene Noble.

In May 2022 she has released a three track EP of stripped back acoustic versions of songs from the SOFIA album as "SOFIA (Acoustic)". A couple of singles have been released since with her latest "Options" released yesterday which is a classy song with jazz inflections.

Angie Stone [2023] - Kiss You [The SoNo Recording Group]

Angie Stone released her first new material for several years yesterday with a Valentines Day single "Kiss You". You may recognise the intro sample as Harold Melvin's & The Blue Notes' "I Miss You".

We did a profile on Angie in December so if you're interested in learning more about her then we'll refer you to that article.

In summary she first recorded at the end of then 70s as a member of The Sequence on Sylvia Robinson's Sugar Hill Records, and was a member of several groups until she broke through as a solo artist with her debut solo album "Black Diamond" in 1999. She is now in her fifth decade of recording.
