Eulaulah Donyll "Lalah" Hathaway, the daughter of legendary Donny Hathaway, was born on 16th Dec 1968 and is celebrating her 54th
birthday today.
She broke onto the music scene in 1990 with a self-titled album
whist she was still studying at Berklee College of Music. To date
she has released six studio albums, a live album and was featured on
a Joe Sample album "The Song Lives On" in 1999. She is currently
reported to be working on a new album "L.A.L.A.H.
Rebirth".
One of her early singles was with the remnants of Heaven 17 (who
previously were members of Human League) B.E.F. i.e. Ian Craig Marsh
and Martin Ware on a cover of Sly & The Family Stone's 1971 hit
"Family Affair" on which her vocals featured in 1991. It was her
most successful single reaching #37 on UK pop chart that year.
She doesn't tend to release many singles and took a five year
hiatus in 1999 after recording an album of jazz covers with Joe
Sample.
I've picked a selection of her best tunes (singles and album tracks)
with a bonus ... well it is nearly Christmas ... a duet with her father on probably
the best ever soul Christmas record recorded by her father in 1970.
As an added bonus there's a live performance of the Leon Russell song
made famous by her father, "A Song For You". Just check out the
number of musicians on that stage! It's a recent recording on 18
Sep 2021 in Rotterdam with Metropole Orchestra.
The playlist is in reverse chronological order from her latest
single with Boney James to a couple of singles and tracks from
her 1990 debut album.
