Abi Farrell [2022] - Stepping Out Of Your Shadow [Big AC #BIGAC015]

Yet another vinyl escapee making it the sixth today! The new single from Big AC's Abi Farrell is due out on vinyl (and digitally) on Friday (28 Jan 2022). It is coupled with her last single "Don't Follow Me", released last November which was very well received.

The new single is titled "Stepping Out Of Your Shadow" and is string laden stomper with a driving horn section which sits squarely in the blue-eyed Northern Soul territory.

Abi is certainly starting to get noticed with endorsements from BBC radio jocks Craig Charles, Robert Elms and Tony Blackburn as well as Blues & Soul magazine.

She has recently opened for Izo Fitzroy and performed some headline shows at Pizaa Express, Holburn and has a few more dates lined up for 2022:

Fri 11 Feb: Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho (Headline show)
Fri 22 Apr: The Night Owl, Finsbury Park (Big AC Records Soul Revue show)
Fri 13 May: The Night Owl, Birmingham (Big AC Records Soul Revue show)

Jesse James [2022] - Father We're Having Trouble Down Here [Soul Junction #SJ546]

It seems that the delays at vinyl pressing plants are now coming to an end as this is the fifth new release found today from another of the UK vinyl/reissue labels. Dave Welding's Soul Junction is set to release a new single from Jesse James next month (21 Feb 2022).

The release consists of two version of a song originally recorded and released on Soul Junction by Duane Williams in 2008 covered by Jesse James "Father We're Having Trouble Down Here".

Duane is one half of the the husband/wife duo Beverly (Wheeler) & Duane from Detroit who recorded six songs / three singles with Will Hatcher (brother of Roger and cousin to Charles Hatcher aka Edwin Starr) between 1978-79, the first being released on Fee which gained them national distribution with Ariola.  They also released a self-titled album on Ariola which had all six sides of their singles plus another two songs co-written with Hatcher.  Beverly had released an earlier single "Don't Shake My Tree" on  a small Detroit label BSC (same label as Betty Lloyd "I'm Catching On") which has picked up plays on the NS scene in recent years.

The couple moved to the west coast but later divorced amicably and Duane returned to Detroit to work again with Hatcher on a solo project "These Songs Are For You" which was picked up by Soul Junction for release on CD in 2009 and this is where the song was first recorded. It followed a single from him "Yes This Love Is Real" released a year earlier on Soul Junction.

Dave Welding approached Jesse James to record a version of the song before Covid and he started working on it at Felton Pilate's studio in Atlanta. However, the pandemic struck with Jesse rooted on the west coast and Felton in Atlanta so work came to an abrupt halt. The recording has now been completed and will be available on 7" vinyl on 21 Feb 2022.

Delegates Of Soul [2022] - What A Lucky Guy I Am / I’ll Keep Running Back // Don’t Take Your Love From Me / Girl I’m At Your Door [Hit And Run #HR1534]

Following on from The Symphonies post for a reissue by Hit and Run, the other new single released on vinyl on 22 Jan 2022 from the label is a reissue of Delegates Of Soul's 1970 single on UpLook along with two previously unreleased (on vinyl) tracks taken from Grapevine's 2006 CD "The Uplook Records Story" which consisted of 21 tracks and is still available digitally on Amazon. There are another two tracks from the group on the CD "Heartbreak Of Love" and an alternate take of "I’ll Keep Running Back" along with three early, previously unreleased, tracks by Teddy Pendergrass pre Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. The remaining tracks are from Tony Talent (aka William Anthony Anderson of The Coalitions)  and Charlie Mintz including his version of "Running Back" and also an instrumental version. So the CD is well worth checking out!

The popular side from the Delegates Of Soul 1970 UpLook single (valued around £1,500 on original vinyl) is the Northern Soul tune "I’ll Keep Running Back" but the better side, for me, is the original A side, the mid tempo "What A Lucky Guy I Am" which was written by a Philadelphian sax player Lu Lupo (Louis Lupinacci) and sounds very like something The Exits / James Conwell could have recorded. It got a reissue by Soul Junction in 2017 on a compilation "We Got A Sweet Thing Going On 3"

The two tracks from CD are "Don’t Take Your Love From Me" a late 60s/early 70s sweet soul number and "Girl I’m At Your Door" a funky crossover tune which was reissued on another CD "Shady Side Of Town Chapter 4" in 2018 by Northern Souleros.

The Symphonies [2022] - That's What Love Will Do / Need Someone To Love [Hit and Run #HR1535]

Garry Cape's Hit And Run Records has just released (22 Jan 2022) two new singles on vinyl. One is a four tracker by Delegates of Soul and the other is this sweet soul harmony / lowrider gem by The Symphonies from 1970 which is apparently the rarest record on the Carnival label on a cat. no. (#546) previously thought to have not existed.

"That's What Love Will Do" was written, according to Discogs, by Ronald McCoy of The Topics, however John Manship calls it as prolific songwriter Rose Marie McCoy (in YT clip below) but in this instance he is mistaken as the song is registered to Ronald McCoy (Sanavan Music) on BMI.

"Need Someone To Love" was written by Winfred Lorenzo Lovett aka Blue Lovett of The Manhattans who also wrote their million selling #1 hit "Kiss And Say Goodbye" in 1976 as well as many other songs for the group.  It was previously released on Carnival 543 in 1969 with the flip side being Maurice Simon And The Pie Men "The Git Go" and is the only other release by the group.

If you want to save yourself almost one and a half grand (as there is (only) one currently for sale on Discogs for that price) then get your order in to Garry via paypal hitandrunsoul45@gmail.com for a mere £12 plus £3 postage.

Kip Carmen [2022] - Feeling Home Again / The Smile On My Face [Izipho Soul #ZP72]

Izipho Soul's latest vinyl release, due on 4 Feb 2022, consists of two tracks from a 1980 self-released album "Just For Tonight" by Kip Carmen. The tracks are the last two on the album "Feeling Home Again" and "The Smile On My Face" and appear on single format for the first time.
Kip Carmen is a Montauk Indian from Huntington, Long Island, NY, who was signed to Hi Records in the 70s where he released a couple of singles (one on the Mach subsidiary) and, apparently, two albums but I can't find any record of them.

In 2019 Izipho Soul also released another single by him along with Danny Horton "Tecihila" c/w "Thoughts Of Loving You" on ZP26.

As is usual practice the run is limited to 300 copies so get your order in now at Izipho Soul if this one ticks your box.

Funkatomic Feat. Brian Lucas [2022] - Feel LIke Makin' Love (Funkatomic Mix) [WU Records]

A house version of Roberta Flack's 1974 classic "Feel Like Makin' Love" by Funkatomic (aka DJ/producer Claudio Caccini) featuring Brian Lucas was released on 10 Jan 2022.  It is actually more like George Benson's uptempo 1983 version than Flack's original
