Avery*Sunshine [2024] - My Way [BigShine Recordings]

We picked up on the new Avery*Sunshine single "My Way" when released on Friday but it didn't really register on first listen, however, we've persevered and perhaps, like us, you may need a few listens to fully appreciate.

The song is co-written with Dana "BigDane" Johnson, Jamison Ross, DrewTheRew (her daughter), Cory Irvin Sr. and John Michael Rouchell and produced by Jamison Ross with four of the writers performing, Cory Irvin (keys), Jamison Ross (drums), Dana "BigDane" Johnson (guitar) and Brian Cockerham (bass). 

It's now the fourth single this year from her forthcoming album, "So Glad To Know". The others were "Fire" (29 Mar),  "I Wonder" (12 Feb) and the funky "Lifted Up" (1 Jan).

Jayh [2024] - Beautiful Stories [Jayhsica Records] (Full Album)

Jayh (Jessica Williams) has spent the last ten years backing artists including Jennifer Hudson and Iggy Azalea and now launches her solo career.

Nellie Charles [2024] - Rain On Me [Chocolate Love Monkey]

Manchester's Nellie Charles made waves with her debut single "BO$$" (music video below) last month and follows it with her new one "Rain On Me".  The song speaks about the ending of a relationship with some ripe language.

You may recognise the library backing that has been used on other recordings which we first came across a few years ago on W3sst's "Midnite" and has cropped up several times since.

Nellie is the sibling of Jack Tyson Charles who are both the children on BBC Radio 6's Craig Charles but with different mothers as Jack was born to actress Cathy Tyson.

SJ_Musik feat. Nucci Da Fooli [2024] - Sweet Thang (Phillet of Soul Re-Edit) [Self Released]

We came across this cover of Rufus & Chaka Khan's classic "Sweet Thang" by SJ_Music at the weekend which sounded promising until the Caribbean style rap kicked in so we sent it to our edit guru who has restructured it sans Nucci Da Fooli and we think he's done a fine job considering what was left without the rap.

We'll include both versions, the original and the Phillet of Soul Re-Edit. It's unofficial so we can't sell it or give it away but if you can provide proof of purchase of the original by SJ_Music  then we can provide you with the edit.

Lee Tracy & Issac Manning [2024] - Is It What You Want? / Saving All My Love For You [Athens Of The North]

An obscurity from 1989 by Lee Tracy (Johnson) & Isaac Manning has been reissued digitally and on vinyl by Athens Of The North. The songs were originally released on Nashville label One Chance Records in 1989 and again in 1991 as promos only and are pretty hard to come by. The last one listed on Popsike sold for almost £900 in Dec '22 and was only VG/VG-. 

Athens Of The North issued a full album by the pair in 2022 digitally and on vinyl which included both songs.

The sides have been flipped leading with the original B side "Is It What You Want?" with an unrecognisable rendition of Whitney Houston's hit, "Saving All My Love For You" (written by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser) on the flip.

A very lo-fi production which seems to add charm to these sort of obscurities which is an acquired taste. (Posted more out of curiosity and interest rather than any musical merit!)

It's also available digitally on Amazon for only £1.38 but we've posted it from Bandcamp as the vinyl is available from there.

Future Davis [2024] - Crazy In Love [Self Released] (Full Album)

A new name to us is Future Davis originally from Toledo, OH, but now living in Atlanta, GA. She released her fourth album since June '22 today called "Crazy In Love" which has a bit of a Leela James feel to it to our ears.

She is holding an album launch party at 20:00 (EDT) in her home town Toledo, OH.

The track that drew us to the album is "Mishandled" feat. Jay Rush Jennings, who's the brother of singer Lyfe Jennings, who's also from Toledo.

Future Davis seems to have emerged in 2021 and has been quite prolific since, releasing 30 singles and 4 albums since Aug '21. All twelve tracks on the latest album are new songs i.e. no previously released singles.

Erica Falls & Vintage Soul [2024] - Up / Makings Of Love [Izipho Soul #ZP105]

Most certainly one of the highlights of 2023 was the excellent single, "Up", from Erica Falls which  which we championed from release last July and is included on her recent album "Emotions". 

Not one to miss an opportunity, Izipho Soul's Pat Biggerstaff has done a deal to release it on a 45 along with "Makings Of Love" from her 2017 "HomeGrown" album.

Two absolutely superb sides on one 45, what's not to like? Snap this up before it's gone if you need it on vinyl as these will definitely sell out quickly.

Hari [2024] - Mixed Reviews on Love [SO Records] (Full EP)

We got a preview of the the forthcoming debut EP "Mixed Reviews on Love" by Haripriya Ngalete last Sep with "Say U Love Me" (Jul '23) and  "More Than A Woman" (Sep '23) bundled together.

In the interim she's released a few collaborations along with two singles "Good Things" (Oct '23) and "Lady" (Feb '24).  The last song, "Craving", was actually released as a single in March '21.
