Romeo Johnson [2024] - 'Til Tomorrow [SANGAHZ Records]

Officially released (on some platforms) on Valentine's Day is a debut single from Romeo Johnson with his take of Marvin Gaye's "'Til Tomorrow". Curiously, as with  Chechi Sarai's cover of Minnie Riperton, the DSPs are showing the release date for the original recording i.e. Feb 1983.

It's perhaps not one of Gaye's better know songs, it was his penultimate hit single (#31 R&B), taken from his last album "Midnight Love" in 1983, before his untimely death on 1 Apr 1984 at the hand of his own father. It will soon be the 40th anniversary so we'll have to do something special for it.

Timothy 'Romeo' Johnson is a vocal coach from Chattanooga, TN, now resident in Las Vegas. He has worked on both American Idol and The Voice, coaching contestants.

He began his career touring with Vesta Williams in the late 80s becoming a background vocalist and dancer for Jody Watley. He also toured with Millie Jackson, Rahsaan Patterson, Rufus, Teddy Riley & GUY, Blackstreet, Patti Austin, Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. 

He's also a session musician performing on many recordings from the likes of Kanye West, Snoop Dogg to Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Holliday.

SOULUSION feat. Natalie May [2024] - Pull Me In [Soul Undercover Music & Savannah Street Music]

Another included in last week's mix (that we have only just got around to posting) is the third release from Minneaopolis' Savannah Street Music in only a week. It's by SOULUSION, a band formed by the label, featuring Natalie May on "Pull Me In". Song writing is once again credited to Ben Obi along with Natalie Mays. 

It's SOULUSIONS' second release following "Games" feat. classically trained Gemma Ashley from the UK, which we posted on day of release, 30 Sep '22. 

Natalie May is from London and last featured here with her Jun 2021 EP "Blossom" which, from what we can see, was her last recording. She had a big club hit, "Sexy Sexy", with BRIT award winners Rudimental in 2009.

Incidentally, the other two Savannah Street singles are doing particularly well, Krishawna is currently #1 and Jay Avion #4 on Amazon UK Hot New Releases (see screen shot below). Hopefully this post will help elevate SOULUSION into the top 100.

Amornay [2024] - Aaron [Self Released]

The fourth single in a month (since 6 Feb) from Amornay is a breathy, ethereal, moody, self-written, song "Aaron", enhanced with some muted jazz trumpet which is perhaps what has drawn us in.

Amornay is Anaysha Robinson from Long Island, NY, who began her career in acting aged 17 and converted to music in 2018 when 21.

DHendricks [2024] - ITS MY TIME [Self Released] (Full EP)

What appears to be a debut three track EP, "ITS MY TIME", by DHendricks (Durell Donte Hendricks) from Dothan, AL.

It took a few listens but we have really warmed to the opening track "Get Away" which has a nice swing and steppers vibe.

D.E.R.Y.L [2024] - Pieces Of Me [Soulful Music Group] (Full Album)

A sophomore album from D.E.R.Y.L (Daryl Hayes Jr. whom we can find no information for) is "Pieces Of Me" released on 1 Mar. It follows his 2015 debut "Complicated".

It's a bit too R&B flavoured in general for our taste to comment on objectively but we did like "We On" and submit the full album for those who appreciate the genre.

The nine tracks include his last five singles released since 2022 and one from 2018. Our selected track is one of the three new songs.

Ang Sirena [2024] - Alone But Not Lonely [Pisc Records] (Full EP)

Filipino-American singer, songwriter, producer Ang Sirena (The Siren), aka Michelle Villegas, is originally from Glendale, CA, now residing in Gilbert, AZ. 

She has released a debut four track EP,  "Alone But Not Lonely", after two singles since May '23, neither of which appear on EP.  

Michelle began writing music in 2008 and releasing music since she was 16 and has more material on her Soundcloud channel dating back 9 years.

Our choice cut is "Debit" which has a bit of a bounce and was was included in this week's mix.

W!ll [2024] - Til We Land [Self Released]

Receiving airplay from promo over the last week is the new single from W!ll, "Til We Land", released today (7 Mar). It's a superb smooth and soulful ballad in the old school style.

W!ll is Will Preyer from Atlanta, GA, who, after performing BGVs for several gospel artists, has been releasing his own music since 2018. This is his second single so far this year following "Rotation" (26 Jan).
