JoDavi Feat. Jackie Gage [2023] - So Called Friends [IAC Records]

JoDavi (aka Joshua Washington from Charlotte, NC) has a new single "So Called Friends" featuring Jackie Gage on vocals. He co-wrote the song with Nicole Gentry. JoDavi plays Rhodes and grand piano on the recording.

This one is a real grower, it builds and builds, perhaps not instant, but after a few listens you're hooked.

It's the first appearance on the blog for JoDavi who has released eleven singles and a full album since 2018.

I like the tone of Jackie Cage's voice so checked out her previous material which consists of just four (laid back) singles since 2019, but she also self-released an album "Siren Songs" in 2016 which is quite jazzy, the standout track, for me, is "It's Your Love".

J-Felix [2023] - The Mint Experiment Volume 1 [OVN Records] (Full EP)

Bristol born, Brighton based, producer / artist J-Felix (Joe F. Newman) describes his music as "A sublime journey through squelchy electro-funk, tripped-out neo soul and woozy hip-hop beats". He was signed to Brighton label Tru Thoughts through playing guitar for Alice Russell and released his debut album "101 Reasons" in 2015.

He has set up his own label OVN Record for the release of his latest four track EP "The Mint Experiment" for which he draws guests such as London's Chloe Bodur, Brighton's Victoria Port (a member of Anushka), Nottingham's Juga-Naut, Brighton's Bessi and Nairobian Bigzy (Kevin Mwai Njenga). 

The two 'picks of the pack' are "Like A Queen" feat. Victoria Port and "Nostalgia" feat. Chloe Bodur.

José James [2023] - On & On [Rainbow Blonde Records] (Full Album)

When we posted José James' last single "Bag Lady" in Nov' 22 we mentioned that it was from a forthcoming album dedicated to the Bag Lady herself, "The Queen of Neo Soul", Erykah Badu (Erica White). Well that day has arrived and "On & On" is out today (20 Jan '23).

The album opens with her 1996 debut single "On & On" from "Baduizm" and continues with:

James say about the album: "Jazz singing has always been about interpreting the highest level of standards of your time. And for my generation Erykah Badu has been one of the most innovative and incisive songwriters. Her work has proven to be groundbreaking in a social, musical and artistic sense."

On the album, James introduces opportunities for featured horn players Ebban Dorsey and Diana Dzhabbar.

Austyn King [2022] - Dedicated 2 You [Self Released]

Singer, drummer, keyboardist & acoustic guitarist, Austyn King has a new single out titled "Dedicated 2 You" on 20 Jan '23. At present it's only available via Bandcamp.

He calls it "the anti-valentines day R&B/Dance song of 2023" which has a bounce with R&B style vocals.

King is from L.A. and has been releasing music for ten ears with over forty songs in his locker. The latest single is the second from his forthcoming self-titled EP due in Spring '23. He released "Lip Service (Remix)" on 13 Jan.
