The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 08 (Feb 2022 Wk 08) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Feb 2022 Wk 08)
In no particular order other than tempo.

A so-so sort of week for good quality new material with most of it being released before Friday. The saving grace on Friday was the release of a couple of albums by Blue Lab Beats and Robert Glasper. I can always tell on a Sunday when trying to select the best twelve and it was a bit of a stretch this week.

The clear standout for me was the debut single from Rae (Reachelle Burns) with a stunning ballad "Fool" so that goes straight to the top of the heap and is this week's SoulStrutter Selection. One that is a real grower and is now getting airplay since posting on the blog on day of releases (23 Feb) is Lydia Persaud "Good For Us".

Krishawna [2022] - Second Offering [Savannah Street Music] (Full Album)

Krishawna (Brown) from St. Pauls, Minnesota, recently appeared live in London at the Global Soul Takeover at The Night Owl on 18 Feb 2022.  She sang a few tracks from her sophomore album, aptly named "Second Offering", which is due for release on Tuesday (1 Mar 2022) and her live performance was excellent (follow link above to listen).

It follows her debut album "Full Disclosure" released exactly a year ago (1 Mar 2021).

The standout tracks are the ones she performed live "Too Much", "I'm Done" and "Jealous", but there are several other nice tracks on the album, so I won't spoil your own choices, as you can listen for yourself and decide.

SoulStrutter Top 30 - 27th Feb 2022 (Week 08)

The SoulStrutter Top 30 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

It's been a crazy week on the blog with the highest number of visitors on three consecutive days with over 3k on two days and over 4k on another and perhaps the chart this week reflects that as four of the top ten have only been posted seven days or less and there are certainly a few surprises, not least the EP from Don-E at #2 which is all previously released material (which I guess 'technically' shouldn't be in the chart as reissues and compilations are excluded i.e. generally only new material is considered).

There are eleven new entries with six of them all entering in the top ten. I'm pleased that last weeks SoulStrutter Selection of the Week (LaToya London & Anthony Hamilton) has entered the chart, but at the same time a little disappointed that it hasn't gone in much higher.

Last week's #1 Devon Howard has been replaced by Sound of Superbad which, whilst only officially released this Friday, was boosted by the pre-release on Bandcamp the previous Friday. Similarly with SouLutions, officially released on Friday but had been posted previously from promo. The top ten entry from Moneá EP "777" is another surprise high entry.

De'lisia [2022] - On the Move [Hype-International Records] (Full Album)

A debut(?) album from De'lisia (James) "On The Move" released 19 Jan 2021.

It's a bit of a mixed album in terms of style, some retro sounding yet others contemporary and basically it's a gospel / Christian album. Two of the tracks have been released as singles in 2018 "Counselor" and "I Am That I Am" and all tracks she co-wrote with Jerry W Johnson.

The best tracks are "Time" and "Counselor".

Calumet [2022] - Musical Brothers of Calumet [Self Released] (Full Album)

Calumet was formed in Phoenix, AZ, in 2001 by Eric 'ET' Mobley (vocals/guitar/keys) and Jason 'JJ Mitchell (guitar/bass) with Ian 'Eon' White (bass) and Brandon Amos (drums). Over the next two years the lineup would change to include Chris 'Basshead' Starks (bass) and Joel 'Boodat' Phillips (drums).

They began as a funk and soul cover band and then started to write their own songs. Their debut album "Retro Energy" manifested in 2002 followed by "The Musical Brothers of Calumet" and "Rock Soul Funkateers" (2008) before the band went on hiatus in 2009.

Calumet was reformed in 2018 by Eric Mobley and Jason Mitchell with new members Josh Prior (bass/guitar), Jeff Pivin (drums), Rich Cross, plus early members Ian White (now on percussion) and Marvin Scott (sax) rejoining.  They released and EP "It’s What You Do" in 2019 and another album "Life In Transition" in 2020.

The album "The Musical Brothers of Calumet" has appeared on DSPs today (26 Feb 2022), which I assume is a reissue from the noughties, although I can find no trace of it being released previously so perhaps it was recorded in the noughties but unreleased?

I'm really enjoying this album, full of authentic, funky, retro 70s tunes. I can't specifically highlight any standouts as they are all of equal quality if you appreciate the early to mid 70s funky vibe, but perhaps "Just Do It" is just doing it for me!

Dayton [2022] - Sky's The Limit [Super Disco Edits #SDE63]

The latest vinyl release from super Disco Edits is an unreleased 1982 recording by Dayton called "Sky's The Limit". It includes a radio edit and a full six minute version on the flip.  Promo copies have been released but are now sold out but the issue copies will follow shortly.

Dayton are, needless to say from Dayton, OH, and were formed David Shawn Sandridge (lead vocals / guitar), Chris Jones, formerly of the group Sun, (lead vocals / keyboards / trumpet) . Other members were from the group Magnum, Dean Hummons (keyboards), Derrick Armstrong (vocals) and Jenny Douglas (vocals) along with Kevin Hurt (drums / percussion), Rachel Beavers (background vocals), Elaine Terry (background vocals), Rahni P. Harris (lead and background vocals, piano and synths) and Karen Harris Chappel (lead and background vocals).

Rhani Harris had recorded a solo album and a couple of singles between 1977-80. I remember well his "Six Million Steps (West Runs South)" from 1978.
