Steve Aggasild [2022-08-01] - SoulAndJazzFlavas [Soul Groove Radio]

This Monday's Soul & Jazz Flavas show from 'The Soul Master' Steve Aggasild on Soul Groove Radio 1st Aug 2022.

Starting from this week Steve starts a new format with Monday's show dedicated to 2022 releases. The first hour is a 2022 retrospective of some of the best tunes of the year so far and this week he featured many songs from Jan/Feb. The last three songs of the first hour are still slow jams but from 2022. The second hour is all the best new and recent week's releases.

His Thursday afternoon recorded show has been changed to a live show on Tuesday nights between 22:00-24:00 (BST/UK Time). The first Tue of the month will be all slow jams, so that will include the first show tonight (Tue 2 Aug).

If you have yet to listen to Steve's shows please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree. His second hour selections of current tunes are the very best around at the moment and there are always plenty of classic soul tunes, and some surprises, in the first hour, not forgetting his trio of slow jams in the middle which always turns up some gems. So something for everyone wrapped into two hours.

Catch up with other SoulAndJazzFlavas podcasts at Mixcloud or from 27 Jun 2022 onwards Podbean

R.I.P. Nichelle Nichols (28 Dec 1932 - 30 Jul 2022)

Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols (aka Grace Dell Nichols) who starred as  Lieutenant Uhura died yesterday aged 89. You may wonder what that has to do with a soul music blog but you may or may not be aware that she was also a singer.

Her first break came in 1961 appearing in Oscar Brown's 'Kicks and Co.' musical. She later appeared in 'Carmen Jones' and 'Porgy and Bess' and toured with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton bands.
In 1967 she recorded an album "Down To Earth" for Epic and a single was released featuring two tracks not on the album which was picked up on by the UK Northern Soul scene "Know What I Mean" / "Why Don't You Do Right?"

Mamas Gun [2022] - Party For One / Looking For Moses [Légère Recordings]

A forthcoming vinyl release on 5 Aug on Légère Recordings by Mamas Gun with two tracks that were both pre-released as a double single from their last album "Cure The Jones",  "Party For One" and "Looking For Moses".

"Looking For Moses" was written on the day of Bill Withers' demise (30 Mar 2020) as a homage to the man.

Available via Bandcamp only I believe but I guess they may find their way to vinyl dealers? I have  a feeling that these will metaphorically 'fly off the shelves' so I'd advise to pre-order.

Don Bryant [2022] - A World Like That / It Was Jealousy [Creative Soul #CS-1002]

As alluded to in the previous post for Ruby Winters single due on Creative Soul, the next release will be two sides by 79 year old Southern Soul veteran Don Bryant who wrote so many songs recorded on the famed Hi label, in particular, in the 60s/70s. He has been married to Ann Peebles since 1974, soon approaching 50 years.

Last year (9 Mar) he wrote and recorded "A World Like That" in response to the shooting of teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, by a police officer in 2014.

He wrote "It Was Jealousy" much earlier and it was first recorded by Otis Clay in 1974 followed by his wife Ann Peebles in 1976, both released on Hi (posted here).

In 2017 he included his own version on his "Don't Give Up On Love" album. Since then he's released a new album in 2020 'You Make Me Feel' which received a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album.

There is no word yet as to release date but keep your eye on Creative Soul website for further details.

Ruby Winters [2022] - I Can't Help But Love You / If We Had Only Met Sooner [Creative Soul #CS-1001]

You may recall back at the end of May (25 May) that two previously unissued tracks from Ruby Winters were highlighted.

Behind the forthcoming release are UK rare soul DJs Cliff Steele in a joint venture with Andy 'Tats' Taylor, under the banner of Creative Soul Records,

They are putting out a double-sided 7" vinyl single of a pairing of Ruby Winters tracks which featured on a 1999 compilation "The Best Of Ruby Winters".  Cliff  told us then that they are due for release in July direct from the Creative Soul website which at the time was still under development.

The website is now complete and today from Creative Soul you can pre-order the vinyl 7" which is now set for release on 10 Aug 2022. This release will be the first time on vinyl for both tracks and I think will be heavily in-demand, so grab a copy when it is released as these will almost certainly soar in price once they're sold.

The two sides are  "I Can't Help But Love You" and "If Only (We Had Met Sooner)" (a cover of Linda Jones). The first side is a George Kerr composition on which he and the Poindexter brothers (Richard and Robert who have written so many great songs) performed background vocals. It may have been written for Linda Jones but she never recorded it.

So how did these recordings come about? George Kerr, as you may know, worked with Linda Jones and The O'Jays around 1967 which brought him to the attention of Phil Kahl, the owner of Diamond Records, by friend and producer Teddy Van (Vann) (who Northern Soulies will know for his "Theme from Coloredman", a mid 70s Wigan Casino instrumental monster). Kerr was drafted in to record sessions with Ruby Winters but only one track saw released, "We Only Have One Life (Let's Live It Together)" with Johnny Thunder in 1968.

George had Ruby listen to some Linda Jones recordings to demonstrate the sound he was trying to achieve and three of them were recorded, the two on this single and "A Last Minute Miracle" a song also recorded by The Shirelles in 1967 (another Northern Soul spin).

For some background information about the album from which the two tracks have been taken visit the original post.

I understand that the next release will combine Don Bryant's single "A World Like That" released in Mar 2021 with his own version of "It Was Jealousy" (from a 2017 album "Don't Give Up On Love") which is a song he wrote that was recorded by Otis Clay in 1974 and then by his wife Ann Peebles in 1976 (both versions and another posted in Mar 2022).

Joyce Sims [2022] - What You Won't Do For Love [August Rose Records]

A couple of weeks ago (15 Jul) a new single from 80s veteran Joyce Sims was posted from promo. It's yet another cover of Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" (which makes it the third or fourth in the last year from recollection) It was due for release on 22 Jul 2022 from a forthcoming album "Change" which I omitted to re-post when it was released and have been reminded as it is now featuring in Amazon UK chart. Sims' version takes the pace up a notch or two from Caldwell's 1978  original.

She had several big club hits in the 80s ("(You Are My) All And All" (1985) and "Lifetime Love" and "Come Into My Life" (both1987), and released two albums in the 80s and has recorded a further four between 2006 and 2014, although two are compilations of previous hits.

Soul Source 25th Anniversary

A website that is a goldmine of information about rare soul music Soul Source celebrates it's 25th anniversary this summer. The site was set up my Mike Hughes in the summer of 1997 and members/contributors include the world's experts in rare soul music as well as many of the artists themselves.
Much information on rare records presented on this blog is mined from Soul Source as it invariably comes up on Google searches when researching artists and their recordings and due credit is given to either the site or the contributor or both.

Along with Soulful Detroit forum and, the now legendary, Bob Abrahamian's Sitting In The Park shows and interviews (he was also a regular contributor using the handle Boba), Soul Source is a world leader in the history of rare soul music.

Congratulations to Mike and all the contributors to Soul Soul and we look forward to another 25 years but sadly most of the current members may no longer be with us but what an incredible legacy of soul music history to leave behind for future generations.
