Cam Cameron [2024] - They Say / I'm A Lonely Man [Soul Junction #SJ554]

A record acquired from one of those, now legendary, Soul Bowl soul packs from the mid 70s now gets a first ever reissue by Soul Junction.

It's price has risen in more recent years (it has a price tag of around £250 now on Discogs) as it has become more appreciated after being overlooked in the heyday because it wasn't deemed fast enough! It must have sold well enough locally in Chicago as there are at least three different pressings on the Capri label. It was the Scott Brothers' label's first release on the label which 45Cat lists as 1968 (copyright for both songs were registered 29 Jan 1968). Soul Junction is releasing it exactly 56 years later on 29 Jan 2024.

Soul Junction's Dave Welding has drawn somewhat of a blank trying to source information about Cam Cameron except that his real name was the A side song's writer, Alvin Cameron. He doesn't appear to have released any further material. BMI lists "They Say" along with another song "Merriam" (sung by George Spice which we can find no trace of) under another Alvin Cameron who may or may not be the same person (we think not).

Whilst "They Say" is more uptempo to "I'm A Lonely Man", the latter (written by the Scott Brothers) is also now getting attention. They were both arranged by Johnny Cameron who worked on many Chicago recordings embraced by the rare soul scene, most notably "I Really Love You" recorded by Jimmy Burns and Bobby James and also versions by The Mystics and Brand New Faces, all of which we featured in 2020.

He also worked with the likes of The Esquires, Syl Johnson, Betty Everett, Garland Green, Denise Chandler (aka Deneice Williams), The Lovelites and many others.

The Caressors / Sir Joe [2023] - I Can’t Stay Away / Every Day (I’ll Be Needing You) [Soul Direction Origins #SDO1008]

Alan Kitchener set up Soul Direction in 2020 and has to date released around 20 singles on the main label. A subsidiary imprint called Origins was created to focus on particularly rare records and has it's eighth release due tomorrow (12 Oct).

It consists of two rarities from Baltimore's Ru-Jac label set up by Rufus Mitchell and Jack Bennet in 1963 and ran until 1974, although one further release materialised in 1980. The label released between 40-50 singles whilst in existence. In 2018 four compilations of the label's output "The Ru-Jac Records Story" Vol's 1-4" were released by Omnivore, from whom these tracks have been licensed. We noticed only last week that they re-emerged on Amazon's new releases, so assume that they are either being re-issued or re-marketed.

The two recordings being paired for Origins 1008 are The Caressors "I Can't Stay Away" and Sir Joe "Every Day (I'll Be Needing You)".

No one at the label recalls anything about The Caressors who recorded two sides for Ru-Jac in 1968. The song is credited to co-owner Rufus Mitchell and George Charles Brown. It has never sold on Discogs and only a handful are listed on Popsike (selling for around the £1,000 mark) along with a few bootlegs on Soulwax (which isn't listed on Discogs). 

Sir Joe is Joe Quarterman from Washington D.C. possibly best known for his only hit single, the funky "(I Got) So Much Trouble in My Mind" as Joe Quarterman & Fee Soul on GSF in 1972.

He met Eddie Best (Gene & Eddie) and Don Downing and became lead singer with The Knights. After several of the members were drafted into the military he formed formed Sir Joe & The Maidens, later joining El Corols Band & Show who released a single "You Must Be An Angel" / "Chick, Chick" on Tiny in 1968. The single was also one of very few (3/4 listed) releases on Tommy Rouse's Washington D.C. Rouser label  billed as just The El Corols in 1971 which sells for big bucks. 45Cat lists another release with an alternate title of "Ain't No Bragg" for "Chick, Chick" with a different cat. no. (but no label scan). All Rouser releases sell for well into four figures.

Quarterman wrote and recorded "Every Day (I'll Be Needing You)" in 1970 for Ru-Jac which was the official B side to "Baby, I'd Drop Every Thing". It is not even listed on 45Cat and we found only one listing for it on Popsike which sold for £348 in Nov 2012.

He had one other earlier release on Ru-Jac in 1967 both sides of which were released as the second Origins release (1002). Soul Direction tell us that "Nobody Beats My Love" along with an unreleased song "A Guy For You" were recorded using spare studio time at Edgewood Studios after the recording of The El Corals single. The flip, "If You Give Up Your Love”, was recorded later at Virtue.

Chris Clark / The Temptations [2023] - Whenever I’m Without You / All I Need Is You To Love Me [Soul Essentials #SEV011]

Outta Sight dig up two previously unreleased Motown tracks from the "Motown Unreleased 1968 Part 2" compilation (2018) for release on 7" single. Frank Wilson is on writing credits for both songs.

The lead side is Chris Clark "Whenever I’m Without You" with only Paul Williams' voice on The Temptations' "All I Need Is You To Love Me".

I suppose this satisfies a certain element of the Northern Soul fraternity's obsession to play it as OVO (original vinyl only) since it has only been available on the 'forbidden' digital format until now (not even available on CD). Ironically, I bet someone has already been playing it off a 'carver' (i.e. vinyl pressing 'bootlegged' from digital format) which is perversely somehow 'acceptable'. Why you would pay more than the 'original' 38 track digital compilation (£10.99) for a vinyl 'reissue' (£13) is completely lost on me, but a case of 'you pays your money you takes your choice'. A complete misinterpretation of the intent of OVO in my book. The Strange World Of Northern Soul indeed!

Renaldo Domino [2023] - I Love My Girl / I'm Hip To Your Game [Epsilon #EPS 019]

Back in Jan 2021 we did a full feature on Renaldo Domino so are very pleased to see that the latest release from Yann Vatiste's Epsilon label are two sides of his first single released on the tiny Arnell label, "I Love My Girl" / "I'm Hip To Your Game" in 1967.

However, Yann has informed us that, unfortunately, the quality of the original Arnell master tape wasn't of sufficient quality to use (as we stated in the feature a couple of years ago it was a low budget production) so it is the later 1968 Smash release that has been used, which to be fair is probably the better version.

We won't regurgitate the previous article here, just summarise, so if you wish to learn more about the artist then visit "Renaldo Domino - Discography". He recorded some great songs with that Chicago mid/late 60s sound, sadly none of them dented the R&B charts.

Domino is a nickname given to him as his voices was 'as sweet as sugar' and Domino was the name of a sugar brand in the US. His real name is Renaldo Jones and after retiring from music when released by Twinight in 1971, he made a comeback in recent years with several singles. 

His first single was as Renaldo Domino & The Orientations and are the two songs released by Epsilon, with the above caveat. The songs were written by two obscure writers, Melvin Johns who wrote the A side and the B side with Nate Taylor, and produced by William Sandy Johnson (who also worked with LaShawn Collins and Wendy Woods, both of whom have seen action on NS dancefloors) and a J. Parnell.

I believe that this is the first ever vinyl reissue for either side, although it appears "I'm Hip To Your Game" was released on a 'dodgy' looking CD "The Best of Northern Soul, Vol. 4" issued by Malibu Public Library in 2019.

Connie Austin / Charles Spurling [2023] - Ball Of Fire / You've Got Love On Top Of Love [Kent Select #CITY 084]

Another vinyl release today from Kent consists of two sides written by Chare Spurling.

The A side is the original version of "Ball Of Fire" by Connie Austin co-written by Charles Spurling with a white country singer named Louis Todd Innis. The song was released in 1968 on King and is her only release as she moved to L.A. not long afterwards and was murdered. It was covered by Marva Whitney the following year on the same label. Austin's original is taken at a slower, more crossover, pace but both are great versions. 

Spurling grew up in Lincoln Heights, OH, and would spar with The Isley Brothers on street corners in singing contests. He met and wrote for Junior McCants who was signed to King. He thought writing for McCants would get his foot in the door at King and wrote his 1967 ultra-rarity (promo only) "Try Me For Your New Love". Spurling recorded five singles for King between 1967-69 including a NS favourite "She Cried Just A Minute". He went on to write songs for several artists on the label including James Brown and Hank Ballard & The Midnighters.

The song on this new Kent Select release, "You’ve Got Love On Top Of Love", is a unissued recording at the time, first seeing the light of day on a Kent CD compilation "King Northern Soul Volume 2" in 2001. On the same compilation is the original flip side of Austin's "Ball Of Fire",  "She Made A Mistake" which is a NS stormer, also written by Spurling, on which she sounds similar to Marva Whitney.

NOTE The track listing from the compilation that "Ball Of Fire" is taken from on Spotify ("Royal Grooves") has been mistitled so it is showing as Gloria Edwards "(Need Nobody Help Me) Keep Up With My Man"

Clifford Curry [1968] - I Can't Get A Hold Of Myself / Ain't No Danger [Elf #90,013]

Clifford Curry, not to be confused with an artist with the same name who is still performing as part of The Notations, was from Knoxville, TN, born in 1936 and later became known as "The King of Beach Music" and was inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame in 1995.

He was a member of several groups in the 50s initially joining The Echoes. They took a song Curry had written called "Mr. Moon" to Atlantic Records who declined it so they then took it to Savoy who released it in 1955 changing the group's name to The Five Pennies. They were later renamed The Chimes and Freddie Scott joined them but by this time Curry had left in 1956.

His next recordings appeared in 1959 first as a featured singer with The Continders and then his first solo outing on Ridgecrest billed as Clifford Curry Jr. In 1964/65 he released two singles on Excello as Sweet Clifford and then his first, and only, hit record on Elf in 1967 with "She Shot A Hole in My Soul" (video below with a short interview afterwards) which reached #3 R&B and #95 Hot 100. He released another seven singles on Elf up to 1969 but couldn't emulate the success of the first hit.

However, one of those singles on Elf from 1968 has been a big tune on Northern Soul dancefloors with "I Can't Get A Hold Of Myself" being christened at The Twisted Wheel but quite how the B side "Ain't No Danger" was overlooked is anyone's guess, probably because back in those, amphetamine fuelled, days it may have seemed 'pedestrian' compared to the A side, but it is certainly no slouch! It got a later release in the UK on Pama in 1970, no doubt due to the demand for it on the Northern scene.

He continued recording through the 70s,80s and 90s on various labels and I would guess was embraced by the North Carolina Beach Scene in the 80s as his first record in 1980 was titled "Shag With Me".

Every single write up I've seen regarding Clifford Curry says what a great person he was, sadly he died in 2016 aged 79.

The Decisions [2022] - That Girl / Come Round Here [Soul Direction #SD-103] OUT NOW

It's from a group known to Northern Soul followers for their "I Can't Forget About You" and for several sides to sweet soul lovers / lowriders, even though they only released five singles it total.

The Decisions were a group of school friends from S.H. Archer High School, Atlanta, GA who graduated in 1965. The group consisted of Hildred Thomason (deceased), Fred White, Henry Little, Howard Simpson and Harvey Poole, although Poole left later to join the U.S. Military. They formed their own label 'York' in the late 60s, on which they released two singles in 1969 before joining Sussex in the early 70s where they released three more singles, two in 1971 and another in 1972.

After leaving Sussex three of the members, which included Fred White, formed Unity who released just one single on Apex (Newark) in 1973. It was the only release for both group and label.

Their Northern Soul favourite "I Can't Forget About You", written by group member Fred White, was issued as the B side of both 1971 Sussex singles and also gained a UK release on the second issue which has kept the price down.

The two tracks being released by Soul-Direction are another pair (the first two "We're In Love" / "I Love You" were released in Jul 2021 and posted along with a full Decisions discography) from an almost lost master tape of tracks recorded in 1968 and would have been a possible release for the bands own York label. The tapes were sent to an L.A. music executive in 1968 by the group but were never returned. Alan has somehow got his hands on them and made them available for the first time, released on limited edition vinyl 7" 45 only. Nancy Butts [2022] - I Want To Hold Your Hand Baby / Your Friend Will Take The Man You Love [Hit And Run #HR 1544]

Nancy Butts was from Sparta, GA, and was the lead singer of family gospel group the Butts Sisters before releasing half a dozen secular singles, initially on Eugene Davis' Detroit label Flaming Arrow and Crow and then on Jar-Val out of Macon, GA, run by DJ Hamp Swain which was also responsible for the release of Matt Brown's superb "Thank You Baby". 

Her first release on Jar-Val included a cover of Don Covay's "Letter Full Of Tears" which was picked up nationally by King Records.

Hit And Run Records is reissuing both sides of her first single on Flaming Arrow "I Want To Hold Your Hand Baby" / "Your Friend Will Take The Man You Love" The top side is a cracking Northern Soul dancer which has seen release on a couple of CD compilations only  ("Northern Soul Southern Style" Goldmine 2006 and "Dream Dancers" by Soul Kitchen) but this is the first reissue on vinyl. Although it is reputed that a quantity of only 200 were released in the late 80s/early 90s after an unissued master was found in Detroit.

Another single well worth checking out is the deep soul song "I Can't Love But One Man At A Time" which I believe was covered by New Love Ltd. as "One Love At A Time" who released it on their only album, "So Much To Talk About", but a different take was also released as a single on Arco. It is thought that it is Nancy Butts on the single but the album vocalist is Valerie Lipford. I think I'll post all three versions separately.

Barbara Lynn [2022] - Unloved, Unwanted Me / Soul Deep [Soul4Real #S4R23]

Following the pair of Jai Alai releases at the back end of August from Pete Belasco and Willie Walker, Soul4Reall have another pair out on the main imprint.

Both releases are 60s recordings not previously available on vinyl. 

The first is a pair of unreleased songs by Barbara Lynn recorded in Memphis in 1968. She recorded six songs in the summer of 1968 produced by Spooner Oldham spread over a couple of sessions which were shelved.

The two songs chosen for this vinyl release are "Unloved, Unwanted Me" and "Soul Deep". "Unloved, Unwanted Me" first featured on a Kent compilation "The Girls Got Soul"  in 2000 and both appeared on a 25 track Barbara Lynn compilation "The Complete Atlantic Recordings" in 2014 which was released digitally as "The Atlantic Collection" in 2018.

Jean Wells [1968 ] - What Have I Got to Lose (Phillet of Soul Extended Mix) [Calla #C-157]

Posted only yesterday is this Northern Soul/Crossover classic (in my book) from Jean Wells "What Have I Got to Lose", and one of the best records you can buy for less than £50 which I've had for many years but sadly (for me)  the price hasn't moved much from when I bought it which may indicate that it's still a sleeping giant? 

Having listened to it again for the first time in a while I felt that it was just far too short at only 2:25 so sent it to an audio expert to see if it could be extended and hey presto with 24 hours he's returned an extended 4:14 version. See what you think!

Joe Buckner & Major IV / Hal Frazier [2022] - I Wish I Knew / I Stand Blue [Kent Select #CITY 077]

Joe Buckner was lead singer of Chicago group Major IV who recorded in L.A. in the late 60s and released three singles on Venture a soul subsidiary of MGM run by William 'Mickey' Stevenson which ran from 1967-69 which released around 50 singles. They released a few others as The Majors and The Major Three.

The song "I Wish I Knew" was written by Leon Ware and, future Supreme, Susaye Greene (she replaced Cindy Birdsong in 1976) who at the time (or soon after) were married. It was released by The Ballads on the label in 1969 and they re-recorded it in 1975 and re-titled it "Butterfly" on Music City and it also came out on Baija as "Butterfli" on the flip to "Confessing A Feeling". Interestingly on the Baija label it states that both sides were from an album "Ballads From The Ground Up" which isn't listed anywhere so presumably never materialised. It would also appear that Baija was their own label as only their recording were released on it.

The B side of this reissue is a beat ballad by Hal Frazier "I Stand Blue" which was also written by Leon Ware. It's only previous release was on the Kent 100 Club Anniversary single of 2019 credited to Mickey Stevenson. Big-voiced Hal Frazier had  another big beat ballad played on the scene "After Closing Time" (a Reprise B side from 1967).

Jean Wells [1968 ] - What Have I Got to Lose [Calla #C-157]

I'm pretty sure this has been posted before but it just came up on Spotify whilst listening to something else and, for me, is one of the greatest records ever recorded. The fabulous Jean Wells "What Have I Got To Lose". She wrote the song and it was her penultimate of eight singles released on Calla in Oct 1968. It was also included on her debut album "World, Here Comes Jean Wells". She released only one further album "Number One" in 1981.

Ruby Winters [2022] - I Can't Help But Love You / If We Had Only Met Sooner [Creative Soul #CS-1001]

You may recall back at the end of May (25 May) that two previously unissued tracks from Ruby Winters were highlighted.

Behind the forthcoming release are UK rare soul DJs Cliff Steele in a joint venture with Andy 'Tats' Taylor, under the banner of Creative Soul Records, 

They are putting out a double-sided 7" vinyl single of a pairing of Ruby Winters tracks which featured on a 1999 compilation "The Best Of Ruby Winters".  Cliff  told us then that they are due for release in July direct from the Creative Soul website which at the time was still under development.

The website is now complete and today from Creative Soul you can pre-order the vinyl 7" which is now set for release on 10 Aug 2022. This release will be the first time on vinyl for both tracks and I think will be heavily in-demand, so grab a copy when it is released as these will almost certainly soar in price once they're sold.

The two sides are  "I Can't Help But Love You" and "If Only (We Had Met Sooner)" (a cover of Linda Jones). The first side is a George Kerr composition on which he and the Poindexter brothers (Richard and Robert who have written so many great songs) performed background vocals. It may have been written for Linda Jones but she never recorded it.

So how did these recordings come about? George Kerr, as you may know, worked with Linda Jones and The O'Jays around 1967 which brought him to the attention of Phil Kahl, the owner of Diamond Records, by friend and producer Teddy Van (Vann) (who Northern Soulies will know for his "Theme from Coloredman", a mid 70s Wigan Casino instrumental monster). Kerr was drafted in to record sessions with Ruby Winters but only one track saw released, "We Only Have One Life (Let's Live It Together)" with Johnny Thunder in 1968. 

George had Ruby listen to some Linda Jones recordings to demonstrate the sound he was trying to achieve and three of them were recorded, the two on this single and "A Last Minute Miracle" a song also recorded by The Shirelles in 1967 (another Northern Soul spin).

I understand that the next release will combine Don Bryant's single "A World Like That" released in Mar 2021 with his own version of "It Was Jealousy" (from a 2017 album "Don't Give Up On Love") which is a song he wrote that was recorded by Otis Clay in 1974 and then by his wife Ann Peebles in 1976 (both versions and another posted in Mar 2022).
