Chris Clark / The Temptations [2023] - Whenever I’m Without You / All I Need Is You To Love Me [Soul Essentials #SEV011]

Outta Sight dig up two previously unreleased Motown tracks from the "Motown Unreleased 1968 Part 2" compilation (2018) for release on 7" single. Frank Wilson is on writing credits for both songs.

The lead side is Chris Clark "Whenever I’m Without You" with only Paul Williams' voice on The Temptations' "All I Need Is You To Love Me".

I suppose this satisfies a certain element of the Northern Soul fraternity's obsession to play it as OVO (original vinyl only) since it has only been available on the 'forbidden' digital format until now (not even available on CD). Ironically, I bet someone has already been playing it off a 'carver' (i.e. vinyl pressing 'bootlegged' from digital format) which is perversely somehow 'acceptable'. Why you would pay more than the 'original' 38 track digital compilation (£10.99) for a vinyl 'reissue' (£13) is completely lost on me, but a case of 'you pays your money you takes your choice'. A complete misinterpretation of the intent of OVO in my book. The Strange World Of Northern Soul indeed!

The Temptations [2022] Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) (slenderbodies Remix) [UMG]

L.A. based duo slenderbodies (Max Vehuni and Benji Cormack) have taken a Temptations, Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong penned, masterpiece "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" (1971), with Eddie Kendricks on lead, and remixed it.

I'll leave you to decide whether or not they have done a good job.

The Temptations [2022] - Temptations 60 [Universal] (Full Album)

The full "Temptations 60" album is released today (28 Jan 2022).

As regular readers will know the outstanding track from this album "Calling Out Your Name" was released a few weeks ago and was SoulStrutter Selection of the Week. 

As intimated in The Dirty Dozen post for w/e 16 Jan having heard the album, I hinted that the best of the other tracks were "Breaking My Back" and "Time For The People" but, for me, "Calling Out Your Name" is still the best track.

The Temptations [2022] - Calling Out Your Name [Universal]

The third single from The Temptations forthcoming 60th anniversary celebration album "Temptations 60" (due on 28 Jan 2022) was released today (14 Jan 2022). It follows "When We Were Kings" released on 3 Dec 2021 and "Is It Gonna Be Yes Or No" which features Smokey Robinson (24 Sep 2021).

I much prefer "Calling Out Your Name" to the last single, timeless classic soul. The song was written by the only original remaining member, 80 year old Otis Williams, along with lead singer on the track Terry Weeks along with Victor Carstarphen who was a one time member of MFSB and wrote and performed for several other Philly acts predominantly in the70s/80s.

If there's more like this on the album then it will be well worth checking out in two weeks time.

The Temptations [2021] - When We Were Kings [UMG]

The first track pre-released from The Temptations album "Temptations 60" which is due on 22 Jan 2022 is "When We Were Kings" released last Friday (3 Dec 2021) to celebrate their 60th anniversary. 

The embryo of the group was formed in 1955 as The Cavaliers changing their name to The Primes in 1957. The Primes disbanded in 1960 but Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams from the group later joined with previous members of The Distants (Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Elbridge "Al" Bryant) to form The Elgins and auditioned for Motown in March 1961. Before singing their name was changed to The Temptations as there was another group (not the later Motown group renamed from The Downbeats) called The Elgins. Their first two singles were released on the Motown Miracle imprint in Jul and Nov 1961 before switching to Gordy in 1962 where they stayed until leaving for Atlantic in 1976/77. They returned to Motown in 1980 continuing on the Gordy imprint.

David Ruffin replaced Al Bryant in Jan 1964 and 'the famous five' went on to start having hits (their first #1 being "My Girl" in Jan 1965) and become international stars.

They've recorded around forty four studio albums and several (approx. four) live albums and multiple compilations and soundtracks.

The group has gone through many line-up changes over the years with only remaining original member being Otis Williams who is now 80. A little anecdote from Wiki (whether it's true or not who knows) but Williams was engaged to Patti LaBelle who ended the engagement after Williams asked her to quit the music business to become a housewife!
