October London [2023] - Mullholland Drive [Death Row Records] VIDEO

There is no doubting that the album of the moment is October London's "The Rebirth Of Marvin", and probably the year as this one will take some beating. 

We posted a live video of the full album a few weeks ago and noticed that there are separate videos (lip synched by the looks of it) for all tracks on the album.

Here's one for the new version of "Mullholland Drive" featuring LaToiya Williams, originally released on "Snoop Dogg Presents Death Row Summer 2022" album last June, which essentially just removes Snoop Dogg's intro. which will please some!

Chuck Cockerham [1969] - Have I Got A Right / Hey There [Mala #12,036]

After abandoning a six part series after the first episode we went looking for something else to watch last night and settled on a 2022 film starring Mel Gibson called "Bandit". It is based on a true story of a Canadian bank robber Gilbert Galvan Jr (aka The Flying Bandit) in the 80s.

All well and good, you say, but I nearly fell out of my seat when an extremely rare and highly regarded and sought after soul record by Chuck Cockerham "Have I Got A Right" was played around the twenty minute mark.

The song has been posted on the blog previously and featured in Richard Searling's Crossover Hot 100  at #3 recently. When last posted in Apr 2020 the going rate was around £2k but, having just checked Popsike, the last one listed for sale in Mar '22 went for $6k (£5,565). Not surprisingly, none have ever sold on Discogs. There are only around ten originals listed but there are also many same-sided 'carvers' listed and even these are beginning to fetch three figures now.

What surprised me further is that it 'Shazamed', as I needed to double check that I wasn't imagining it. As far as I can discover, it has featured on only one compilation, a UK 4 CD comp. "Keeping The Faith: 40 Years Of Northern Soul Memories & Souvenirs" released by Castle in 2007. So it's quite bemusing how this was featured in a movie in 2022 and was identified by Shazam.

Not long later in the film a previously unreleased song "With My Love" by Jimmy Radcliffe was also played. It was released in Oct '22 along with two other tracks.

We don't need any excuse to repost this classic and fortunately, since posting it several years ago, the flip side has now also been posted on YouTube (only a month ago). Which, having never heard it before, is also pretty good.

Kierra Sheard & Charles Jenkins [2023] - We Found Love [Oro Music]

Whilst we're on the Gospel tip, following the new single from LaTocha, Kierra Sheard currently features on a single by Stanley Brown "God Is Good" that is receiving plenty of rotation. She also released a new album on Friday "All Yours", around her twelfth album, many of which have topped the Billboard gospel chart.

We go back a month to 3 Feb for her last solo single "We Found Love" with multi gospel award winning Charles Jenkins which doesn't appear on the new album. I note that the song is written by Calvin Harris which alerted the fact that it is a completely different take on the 2011 Rhianna hit song! It's from a forthcoming EP "Spread The Gospel".

Kierra Sheard is from Detroit and the daughter of Clarke Sisters singer Karen Clarke-Sheard and has been active since the age of 9 in 1997.

LaTocha [2023] - Stay With Me [Motown Gospel (EGS)]

A gospel tinged, contemporary deep soul ballad "Stay With Me" (not the Lorraine Ellison classic) by, former 90s girl group Xscape member, LaTocha Scott is released on Motown Gospel. 

It's the first single from an upcoming album "The Invitation: A Conversation With God" due on 7 Apr '23 which will be her second solo album, the first "Solo Flight 404" coming in 2003.

LaTocha released her debut single "Angel In My Heart" in 1984 aged only 11 long before joining Xscape.

Alexis Danielle [2023] - Someone Like You (S.L.Y.) [Self Released]

A new name, Alexis Danielle Granville, who was a contestant in season 14 of American Idol in 2015, eliminated in the second round.

As far as can be ascertained, her new single "Someone Like You (S.L.Y.)" released on Thursday (2 Mar '23)  is only her fourth. Her first, "Pretty" was delivered in Oct 2019
