Robert Winters & Fall [1980s] Magic Man / When Will My Love Be Right / Touched By You / Do It Any Way You Want

Robert Winters & Fall (Fall is Walter Turner) released two albums "Magic Man" (Buddah 1981) and "L-O-V-E" (Casablanca 1982). The first album spawned three singles and the second two.

Both albums were produced by Jimmy Bee who Northern Soul devotees will know for his 1970 outing "Wanting You" on Kimberly / Kent.

Only three of the five singles charted for them. They were "Magic Man"  (R&B #11 / Billboard #101) / "When Will My Love Be Right(R&B #46) / "Do It Any Way You Want(R&B #39) (played on GVB's radio show today which gave me the inspiration to post the others on another quiet day for new releases).

I've also included the flip side to "When Will My Love Be Right", "Touched By You".

Super Jack [2021] - The After Party, Pt. 1 [Studio Suzuki]

Super Jack (Jack Marley Seda-Schreiber) is a vocalist, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist and producer from New York.

It would appear that he's released five albums, four EPs and around twenty singles since 2018. His latest single "The After Party, Pt. 1" was released today (10 Nov 2021).

Steve Winwood [1997] - Plenty Lovin' / Family Affair [Virgin]

How many would expect such a soulful sound emanating from a 60s British beat /rock group singer Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith)?

"Plenty Lovin'" is taken from his 1997 album "Junction Seven" and features Des'ree. This track, as well as many others, was co-written with Narada Michael Walden, who also co-produced and arranged the album. A few songs also included fellow Traffic member Jim Capaldi on writing credits.

Also on the album is a respectable cover of Sly & The Family Stone's "Family Affair" which includes Santana's Tony Lindsay on backing vocals, who of course currently has a new album "Soul Soldier" which is doing well and getting 'plenty lovin''.

A post inspired by Gary Van Den Bussche's play of "Plenty Lovin'" on his radio show today. Not so much a 'hidden gem', as I think it's fairly well known, but certainly an underplayed one

Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles [2021] - How Can You Throw My Love Away / When Joe Touches Me [Soul4Real #S4R17]

Hot on the heels of the success of the two singles released only a couple of weeks ago on their new Jai Alai imprint (Rance Allen Group and Ursula Ricks both now sold out but you may find one with a dealer), Soul4Real release another vinyl only single from Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles.

Both sides "How Can You Throw My Love Away" (also recorded by Carla Thomas on "Memphis Queen" 1969) and "When Joe Touches Me" were recorded in Chicago in 1969 (at the same session as their last Atlantic single "Trustin' Heart" written and produced by Curtis Mayfield).

They are previously unreleased on vinyl, but look like they have been lifted from the 2014 40 track compilation "The Complete Atlantic Sides Plus" released on CD by Real Gone Music and digitally released by Rhino in 2016.

As the CD title implies, it consists of all the songs they recorded during their tenure with Atlantic Records between 1965, starting with the underrated "All Or Nothing", through to 1970 with "Trustin' In You". Around a dozen singles were released by Atlantic but only two charted "I'm Still Waiting" (1966)  and "Take Me For A Little While" (1967) both reaching #36 R&B with the latter getting to #89 on Billboard Hot 100.

In the early years the group consisted of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendrix, Sarah Dash and Cindy Birdsong who left in 1967 to replace Florence Ballard in The Supremes.

After Atlantic the remaining three moved to Warner Bros. (3 singles between 1971-72), RCA (2 singles in 1973) and then Epic where they had their biggest hit "Lady Marmalade" #1 R&B and Hot 100 in 1973 simply named LaBelle.

E-Jon [1982] - Tricky Sticky Situation [Apex Record Productions #DT-2981]

It really is a very slow week for good quality new releases so far this week so, rather than posting sub standard music just because it's new,  I'll continue to feature some hidden gems.

This one is for DJ Kool Keith who suggested I should 'find my own' rather than cherry pick from shows. To an extent he has a point and I am more than capable of selecting some hidden gems from the bottomless pit.

Here's one I have only just come across that was previously unknown to me so possibly also to many others.

I believe "Tricky Sticky Situation" is from 1982 as that's the date of  the album with the same name from which the single was taken. It's a one-off single and album released on Apex Records Productions by E.Jon (aka Elijah Jones) who was a one-time member of Instant Funk who were from Trenton, NJ, which is where the Apex label was based. I suspect that the label could well have been his own (or a private press) given that no other material seems to have been released on it.

Four of the tracks on the album, including this one, were later released (1986) with some new material for an album "In The Land Of Making Love", another one-off on a label called Showell.

If you like 'em 'deep 'n sweet', then this is one's for you .

Antoine Hilton [2021] - Antoine Hilton: Heclectic [XODM-Hallmarx Music] (Full Album)

This would appear to be a reissue (2 Nov 2021) of an album released only last July (2020) with a subtle change of title from "HeClectic" to "Antoine Hilton: Heclectic". Therefore, I can only assume, like several other artists, the album is being re-promoted as it couldn't be properly promoted last year owing to Covid. The track list and running times are identical.

The eleven tracks include three which have been released as singles "Love Letter" (Sep 2013), "Lord I" Apr 2019), "No More Lonely Nights" (Feb 2020). The "Amazing Grace" track isn't the gospel standard, it's a new song.

The two top tracks for me, are "No More Lonely Nights" and "Coming Home".

It's not on the album, but I found a video of him performing Sam Cooke's classic "A Changed Is Gonna Come" so thought it well worth posting.
