The new Will Downing album "Sophisticated Soul" is released today (1 Nov 2021). We've already had a taste via the
single "The Warmth Of You" released on 13 Aug 2021.
It will be his 25th album in 33 years since debuting with his self-titled
album in 1988. He also had his first hit that year with a cover of Deniece
Williams' "Free". Amazingly, after checking his back catalogue, I
discovered that he has not had a single in the Billboard Hot 100, although
many of his albums have done well!
Prior to going solo he was a member of Wally Jump Junior & The Criminal Element (produced by Arthur Baker) who had a few minor hits in the UK but not in US.
As we've come to 'expect' it's another strong set. It's a bit 'academic'
trying to choose a standout as it's solid throughout, but on first
impression "Never Wanted Anyone" is a stone cold killer, "Baby I'm Yours" and "Come With Me" stood out but really you could choose any three! If this is not a #1 on
UK soul charts I'll be very surprised!
