The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 29 (Aug 2021 Wk 33) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Aug 2021 Wk 33)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Another very slow week for new material, it must be the time of year (holiday season?).

I'll pre-empt by stating that the new single from Earth, Wind & Fire featuring Lucky Day, which is a reimagination of their 1975 track "Can't Hide Love", titled "You Want My Love" has been put in the covers Dirty Dozen as it's a cover/sample/reworking (call it what you will) but it's not really an 'original' track, as good as it is.

I do consider it as one of the best releases of the week, but the main purpose of the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week is to give exposure to lesser known artists, so this week's award goes to Shannon Lauren Callihan with "You Used To Be My Love".

Acantha Lang's new five track EP has all her three singles, a cover and her best track to date "Sugar Woman". Another contender was E.D.I.S featuring Ariel Rae with "Peaches".

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 22 (Aug 2021 Wk 33)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples or new releases with a retro feel (Aug 2021 Wk 33). (In no particular order).

Four reissues via albums/EPs M.A.C.J Feat. Starlet and David Scott, along with Kirby who's single released in April is bundled with her latest single and Charles Bradley featured on a live album from Daptone.

Two covers/re-imaginings from Melanie Charles and Earth Wind & Fire Feat. Lucky Day.

Remixes/reworkings from Gabriels, Nao Yashioka, Cornell C.C. Carter, Brooklyn Groove Machine and Joseph Malik Feat. Niki King.

Finally a pre-released album track from The (Detroit) Spinners I've added as a retro sounding track to make up the dozen.

Sebb Junior Feat. Eric Roberson & Paula [2021] - Don't Stop (DJ Jazzy Jeff & Kaidi Tatham Remix) [Reel People Music]

This one passed my by when released at the beginning on July that I haven't seen it on any playlists which is surprising as it's from Reel People Music who usually get a high profile.

The track is "Don't Stop" by Sebb Junior Feat. Eric Roberson & Paula, who I assume is Paula Champion who featured on Reel People's recent hit "Vibe". Sebb Junior is a French house DJ/producer based in Spain and Eric Roberson should need no introduction as he's one of the best indie soul artists around who recently released a superb track called "Lessons".

There are three mixes, extended, edit and instrumental, the extended 'goes on a bit' so I've posted the edit.

The Global Soul Chart - 21st Aug 2021 - The Essential 5 & The Breakers

This week's 'Essential 5' and 'The Breakers' played by Franklin Sinclair on the Global Soul Chart Show which is aired between 5pm-7pm every Saturday on Global Soul Radio.

He plays the Essential 5 at the start of the show, whilst The Breakers are interspersed between chart entries.

A podcast of the show is posted each week on Mixcloud or listen on Global Soul Chart post.

The Essential 5

No Essential 5 selected this week as Russ Cole deputised in Franklin's absence. Char Elizabeth from last week's '5' entered the chart this week at #18 with her EP In2Me.

The Breakers

Ten breakers featured this week, two not yet posted and three not yet released. Reva DeVito & Midas Hutch - One Shot from last week was this week's chart highest new entry at #6 and Alvin Garrett - Flowers squeezed in at #20

Mandee The Singer - Mr Big Man

The Global Soul Chart - 21st Aug 2021

Russ Cole deputised for Franklin Sinclair this week so there was no 'Essential 5'. There were five new entries Alvin Garrett, Char Elizabeth (who I 'nudged' at in my comments last week) and two 'obvious' ones I predicted last week, Kim Tavar and Will Downing (no Victor Haynes though) and one of last week's breakers Reva DeVito & Midas Hutch is this week's highest new entry just pipping Will Downing at #6.

Unfortunately Samm Henshaw hasn't progressed and stays rooted at #3 with this week's highest climber Victoria Monet leapfrogging him into the second slot. Last week's #2 D. Folks takes a nose dive to #15.

Still no place for GarciaWalker&Durrell, which I find quite bewildering as it tops the Starpoint UK Soul chart for the third consecutive week and is also the top viewed post on this blog for the last 30 days for the third week running and has been since it was first posted on 27 Jul.

It's even more astonishing as if anyone can name a better, more complete, album released this year then I'm open to suggestions as it must have passed me by!

Losers:
Shaila Prospere, Jaszy Shavers, Jewell Booker, Portrait , Ms. Kriss

Highest Risers:
Victoria Monét (+10), Christopher Williams etc. (+6)

Biggest Fallers:
D.Folks  (-13), Sidibe (-9), Kevin Ross (-7)

NB The 'Essential 5' and 'The Breakers' are listed in a separate post.

Nao Yoshioka [2021] - Philly Soul Sessions [Sweet Soul Records] (Full EP)

Japanese singer Nao Yoshioka, now living in New York, released an album last year titled "Undeniable". Owing to the pandemic her plans to tour to promote the album were quashed so instead she has re-recorded four of the album tracks with Philly Soul Sessions remixes and added another two new songs and released them as six track EP "Philly Soul Sessions" on Friday (20 Aug 2021).

Two of the tracks "Liberation" and "Got Me" have already been pre-released (and posted) as singles.

Cleo Sol [2021] - Mother [Forever Living Originals] (Full Album)

Cleo Sol (Cleopatra Nikolic) is from Ladbroke Grove, West London born to a Jamaican father and Serbian/Spanish mother who debuted in 2011 with "High". She has released her second full length album "Mother" on 20 Aug 2021.

It's a very laid back affair, with a few tracks standing out on first listen such as "Don't Let Me Fall", "Promises" and "Sunshine". A blog reader has also recommended "23". I think it's one of those albums you need to listen to a few times for some of the tracks to register as there are possibly some other 'growers' on ther..

ThePleasurePrinciple Feat. Heidi Vogel [2021] - Coral Drive Hustler [Expressive Records]

I stated, when posted, that I thought Earth, Wind & Fire Feat. Lucky Daye's new single was going to be a monster, well I also think that "Coral Drive Hustler" from The PleasurePrinciple will be too. Release date is scheduled for 10 Sep 2021 and you can pre-order from 27 Aug 2021 on TraxSource.

I can find absolutely no info on ThePleasurePrinciple, so assume it's a made up name of a studio band for this, their first release? Heidi Vogel is a jazz singer from London who has performed with The Cinematic Orchestra for fifteen years.

Mandee Singer [2021] - Mr Big Man [Self Released]

Mandee Singer has been receiving airplay for her new single "Mr Big Man" on advance promos. I have been unable to find it for sale anywhere, so presume it is still to be released, however, she has posted a video of her performing it at a party recently so I have embeded the facebook post below, until it is available.

Silk Sonic [2021] - Skate (T-Groove ”Roller Disco” Remix) [Self Released]

Similarly with the first Silk Sonic release "Leave The Door Open", it was only a matter of time before the covers and remixes of their latest release "Skate" began. Here's, the first from Japanese producer Yuki 'T-Groove"' Takahashi "T-Groove ”Roller Disco” Remix". He posted it on his YT channel yesterday (20 Aug 2021) and I would hazard a guess that it's not an official/legit release? So let's see how long it is before it is taken down!
