The first of a weekly collaboration between Soul Sorts and SoulStrutter where host presenter Roger Williams has kindly invited me to select three tracks each week to feature at the start of the second hour of his radio show. One of the tracks will generally be the current SoulStrutter Selection of the Week (SSSotW) but don't be surprised if the other two you hear first on the programme as I will try to 'keep my powder dry' on those until they air on the show.
The show this week is a blend of brand new releases and a selection of tracks he is still catching up on from late May when he started a ten week run of featuring only 90s tunes. This show isn't about 'being first' and then dropping it for the 'next big thing'', it's about playing good quality 'current' soul music whether days, weeks or months old.
This week's SoulStrutter Selections are last week's SSSotW by new artist Vince Bryant "Gitwitu", followed by the best track ("Better") from a forthcoming EP "Wave 1" from Sydney collective Frequency. Some have already picked up on "Sunshine" which was pre-released as a single but seem to have have overlooked this track.
The third selection is just sheer class for lovers of real soul music. For me, the best track on a particularly outstanding album ("Slow Motion") from the ever consistent Carmichael Musiclover, which will certainly be a strong contender for album of the year (again). The track in question is the incredibly soulful "Time For The Sunshine". It's a shame a lot of DJs are tempted to take the easy route and just play the up-tempo tunes and omit to play these gems. It was great to see Roger give Down To Earth's "Right From The Start" a well deserved airing towards the end of the show as well.
Roger's show is broadcast every Sunday between 22:00-00:00 (GMT)
on
Starpoint Radio playing his selection of the best new soul and jazz releases.
Broadcast on Starpoint Radio Sunday 26th September
