Ted Winn Feat. Stout [2021] - Inner City Blues [Self Released]

I'm sure you didn't think you needed yet another cover version of Marvin Gaye's 1971 social commentary, "Inner City Blues", in your life but give this contemporary update by Ted Winn (released on Thursday 16 Sep 2021) a listen and contemplate whether anything has significantly improved in 50 years!

Tedi Winn is from Memphis, TN and was one half of the gospel duo Tedi & Sheri (Sheri Jones-Moffett) in the 90s.

Jynn Cole [2021] - Honey Fall [Investing Black Records]

Another relative newcomer is Jynn Cole who released her sophomore single yesterday (17 Sep 2021) called "Honey Fall". 

Her first was "Boots" a cover on Nancy Sinatra 1966 song "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" (a strange choice for a debut!) released in June. It just goes to show that you can't trust the credits on Spotify as the writer's credits for it have been given to Jynn Cole when in fact Lee Hazelwood wrote the song! 

The Happy Cats recorded an instrumental version of 'Boots' which got plays on the Northern Soul scene. It was played by Richard Searling at Wigan Casino I 'believe', if memory serves correctly, but it sounds more like a Russ Winstanley kind of tune, but I think I'm correct as it also got released on John Anderson's Grapevine label in 1978 and John used to feed Richard new tunes to play. Unbelievably an original on Omack now sells around the £100 mark!

This is one of the better tunes I've heard to come out this weekend.

Ave the Fox [2021] - Broke Me [Fox Only Entertainment]

It seems that once someone latches onto a sample it becomes widespread, as here's another that uses the HM & Blue Notes & Sharon Paige sample. Speaking with Manny The Realm recently it appears that samples are put in the public domain so perhaps that's why they get widely used?

A few others have already sampled it this year including Surya (Mar) on "Sunny Daze" and Atiya last month on "Smooth Operator" with another from L8nC (a hip-hop track on which the sound quality is dreadful taking lo-fi to the extreme/ridiculous!) and it was covered by Jean Carne in July, 

This time it's the turn of Ave The Fox from St Louis, MO (aka Ebizz Ness who I believe might actually be Matthew Bell as that name appears on all writing credits) on a track titled  "Broke Me" from an album released yesterday (17 Sep 2021) "The Love Movement Presents : Rose Imitated Love". It's a very short track of only 1:34 in duration!

Chandra Robinson [2021] - Make This Wrong Right (My Truth EP) [Ragz2Richzent]

Chandra Robinson is another débutée,  releasing her first recording yesterday which is a six track EP called "The Truth". The outstanding track is the deep soul cut "Make This Wrong Right". I won't post the full EP as her vocals sound a bit off to me on a few tracks and two contain significant 'hard' rap so the only track I can really recommend is this one. 

I'm not able to find anything about her, not even any social media presence as there are too many people with that name to plough through.

Eric Jaye [2021] - Soul Groove [Self Released] (Full Album)

Eric Jaye is an artist from Newport News, VA (Estee Pierce's neck of the woods), who appears to have started releasing music in 2018. 

"Soul Groove" is his debut album released on 17 Sep 2021, having four single already under his belt, one of which, "Shawty Knows" released earlier this year,  appears on the album.  

From the album cover I thought it was likely to be a smooth jazz album, it's not, but most tracks contain 'rhythmic' rapping, including both of my 'choice cuts' "Jonesin'" and "Slide".

I was going to only post those two tracks but listening again there may be other tracks that some may  appreciate as there could be a couple of 'growers' on the album. I quite like "The Great Storm In My Mind" but was put off by the psychedelic rock style guitar and "Put Me On" may be a grower. 

I think the album definitely needs a few listens to fully appreciate.
