Jesse James - (The Girl In) Clinton Park / Just As Long As We're In Love [Soul Junction #SJ543]

Due for release on 25 Jan 2021 is a previously unissued recording by Jesse James. He recorded the track, written by Stanley Lippitt (aka Little Stanley),  along with a few others, in 1971 after his spell at 20th Century-Fox ended. A couple of the other tracks ('At Last' & 'I Know I'll Find Another') got released on Zay but 'Clinton Park' didn't get a release.

Jesse James has had a couple of 45s and an album already released on Soul Junction and recalled recording this unreleased track but was unable to locate it, but during the current pandemic has managed to find the master tape and provided it to Dave Welding at Soul Junction to release.

Read the background story at Soul Junction and while you're there pre-order a copy. as I'm pretty sure these will sell out quickly.

On the B side is a cover of Terry Callier's 'Just As Long As We're In Love' (released on 'What Color Is Love', Cadet 1972, also recorded by The Dells on a Cadet 45 in 1972) which was previously released on his Soul Junction album 'Let Me Show You'.

Here's a Soul Junction promo of both sides.

Masterplan [1974] - (The Girl In) Clinton Park [Fos-Glo #005/006]

Bay Area group Masterplan released a version in 1974 on Fos-Glo and De-Lite. It has been claimed that the Fos-Glo release was a 1978 reissue and that the De-Lite pressing is the original. I think this is based on this article about the writer Stanley Lippitt aka Little Stanley which states:

"In 1974 The Master Plan released on De-Lite Records with success two of Stanley's recordings "Clinton Park (a song written about Marvin Holmes young daughter) and "Frying Pan". These were also later released on Warren Foster and Ronnie Bell's Fos-Glo label who Stanley was an A & R man for."

As well a co-owning the label, Ron Bell was also member of Masterplan. I guess Lippit should know as he was involved with the label but other evidence suggests that he 'may' be mistaken. Fos-Glo 001/002 and 003/004 were released in 1974 with the same label colour and design as 005/006 whilst most of the other releases are either a different colour and/or label design. In 1976 the label was yellow and by 1978 the label design changed and by 1980 the label was grey.  Another argument is, why would they wait 4 years to issue it? I am inclined to believe what Dave Welding states, that the Fos-Glo was a west coast release in Nov 1974 (dated on 45Cat) whilst De-Lite was an east coast release a month later Dec 1974 (dated on 45Cat).

Another curiosity is that the Masterplan release on Fos-Glo 007, dated 1983, has the same label design as the first 3 releases, but not the others, so I wonder if the date on that is incorrect and it is actually the fourth release following the series numbers (closer to 1974). I've given it a listen and it's difficult to tell it 'could' be a 1983 release but equally could be earlier.

Something I've never quite understood about US 45 releases is that only rarely is the release date printed on the label yet almost always the track time is recorded. In the UK it is usually the other way around i.e. date normally there but timings aren't.

To confuse the issue further, 45Cat has conflated two groups with the same name, but The Masterplan on A&M is a different group, although they were also from California (L.A.). The A&M group contained Jerry Marcellino and Mel Larson who were blue-eyed singers, writers and producers and were in several other earlier groups together: The Naturals, The Three Honeydrops and Jerry & Mel. They also cut a 45 together on A&M in 1969 as Marcellino & Larson - Dweller / Bittersweet.  The pair went on to produce many Motown artists including Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Four Tops, Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie as well as Al Jarreau.

Clauds [2020] - Identity [Virtue Records & Entertainment] (Full Album)

I 'slept' a bit on this album and with hindsight it should have featured in my Best Albums of 2020. A good album all the way through with 13 tracks, released 31 July 2020.  Some African rhythms and reggae tracks and a bit of rapping on one or two tracks, but also some nice smooth neo soul tracks, I've linked to several of the more uptempo numbers below but a link to the full album here and there's some further nice mellow sounds on there.  Highly recommended.  It took me a few listens to fully appreciate.

I can't find any info on her but assume it to be her debut and she's from South Africa. On the strength of this album I fully expect, and look forward to, a follow up.

G.C. Cameron [2021] - Out Of The Shadows [Nationrizn] (Full Album)

New album from Motown veteran G.C. (George Curtis) Cameron (released 1 Jan 2021), who's probably best known as the lead singer with The (Detroit) Spinners.  He was lead on their first big hit 'It's A Shame' in 1970.  When The Spinners left Motown in 1971 for Atlantic, Cameron decided to stay at Motown where he released four albums beween 1974-77 ('Love Songs & Other Tragedies' 1974, 'G.C. Cameron' 1976,  'You're What's Missing In My Life' 1977 and a duet album with Syreeta 'Rich Love Poor Love' 1977), although he rejoined them in 2000 for a few years replacing John Edwards who suffered a stroke.

He recorded the album 'Give Me Your Love' for Malaco in 1984 and then another with Ian Levine's MotorCity in the 90s 'Right Or Wrong'.  He continued his solo career with at least 5 albums released since 2000. 'Shadows' (Wiki states released 2001, Discogs 2005/07 and playlist on his YT channel 2009 - so take your pick), 'No Need To Explain' 2007, 'Jokers Are Wild' 2007, 'Enticed Ecstacy' 2009 and his latest 'Out Of The Shadows' 2021.

This album contains 3 tracks released on Shadows ('I Choose Your Love', 'Foolish', 'Truly Wonderful') hence, presumably, the title 'Out Of The Shadows'.  It also contains re-recordings of Spinners' hits 'It's A Shame', 'I'll Be Around' and his biggest solo recording 'It's Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday' and a couple of covers of classics such as  'Papa Was A Rollin' Stone' (who many think was originally recorded by The Temptations but Undisputed Truth's was the original in 1972) and 'People Get Ready' (The Impressions).

As an aside, for the Northern Soulies, Joe Harris was the lead singer for Undisputed Truth. He was previously a member of The Fabulous Peps (who had a few records spun on NS scene e.g. 'With These Eyes', 'My Love Looks Good On You' and several others), The Monticellos ('I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face' on Red Cap) and was a member of The Ohio Untouchables/Players before joining Undisputed Truth in 1970, so was, presumably, on their Compass recordings such as 'You Don't Mean It'.  Tyrone Barkley ('Man Of Value') later joined the group along with other members of The Magic Tones. Chaka Khan's sister, known as Taka Boom, joined the group in 1976 for the album 'Method To The Madness' which spawned the minor UK hit 'You + Me = Love' which reached #43 in 1977. They also released the Norman Whitfield song 'Save My Love For A Rainy Day' in 1971 which was not as 'urgent' as the monster version played on NS scene by The Van Dykes on Mala from 1967.  They were a vastly underrated group, probably in the shadows of The Temptations, which gives me an idea for featuring some of their recording in a future post.

There is a '50th Anniversary Edition' banner on the sleeve which I presume must be in reference to his 50 years in the business since 1970 when he joined The Spinners after serving in Vietnam as a marine.

Here's my favourite tracks from the album, but you can hear the full album here.

People Get Ready

I'm going to kick-off the highlighted tracks with People Get Ready as it's a pleasant surprise as he goes deep on his version of the Curtis Mayfield song originally recorded in 1965 by The Impressions.

Output / Input [2020] - Eye To Eye / Take A Stab / What Cha' Gonna Do For Me [Independent]

Eye To Eye has been doing the rounds for several weeks (released 25 Nov 2020) and is riding high in UK Soul charts, but I realised that I haven't 'featured' it except in the chart listings.  Having listened to some fairly bland releases over recent days this one jumps out at me.

Output / Input are a group of internationally recognised musicians that have toured the world playing music, and with artists including Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, Lee Ritenour, Bryan Ferry, Diana Ross, George Benson and more.
Their first musical offering was a cover version of Earth Wind & Fire classic 'In The Stone', followed by Michael Jackson's 'Get On The Floor' then 'Only So Much Oil In The Ground' by Tower Of Power.

You can listen to their other material on their YT Channel.

Eye To Eye

It is, of course, a cover of Chaka Khan's 'Eye To Eye' from her 'I Feel For You' album in 1984. It didn't get a US single release, only in Europe and reached #16 in UK.

Shannon Pearson on lead vocals. She is an accomplished session singer appearing on albums from George Duke, Jeffrey Osbourne, Howard Hewett, Sy Smith and others. She has also appeared with Patti Labelle, Heather Headley, Regina Bell, Anthony Hamilton and Al Jarreau.

Take A Stab

Their new single released 27 Dec 2020 has London based session singer Katie Holmes-Smith on lead, who has performed backing vocals for Adele on her 2016 tour and has recently toured with Ollie Murs.
This song was originally recorded by Danish artist Annekei on her 2009 album Touch, produced by jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour, which appears to have only been released in Japan.

What Cha' Gonna Do For Me

Released 31 Oct 2020, was another Chaka Khan song What Cha' Gonna Do For Me from 1981, but also recorded by Averege White Band in 1980 on their 'Shine' album. Vocals were shared between Shannon Pearson and Katie Holmes-Smith.

Kay [2021] - I Like It [KARL FULTZ MUSIC LLC]

This came out in Oct 2020 and has been reissued on 5 Jan 2021 with 11 different mixes. I think you really would need to 'Like It' to buy 11 different mixes of the same song!

Shannon Giselle [2021] - My Loves Waitin 4 U [Self Release]

It gets really confusing with the abundance of new digital releases. This was released 10 Jan 2021 and on the same day she released another called 'Anybody'.  They are both a little too RnB for me but this is the better of the two.  I can find only one other release from her, 'Ah Yeah' from Jul 2020, which is even more RnB flavoured than these two.

For me, it just plods along but doesn't really go anywhere.  It's pleasant enough background music but just doesn't grab me and make me sit up and pay attention.

Lamone [2021] - Born To Be King [Lamone]

New single from Lamone (Andrews) after several years absence. He released his debut album 'Electrically Speaking' in 2007, and another in 2016 titled 'Smooth'.  He's an independent artist who I can find little info about.

Click links above if you wish to listen to these albums, but, as well as posting his latest release, I'll post links to a selection of the better cuts from the albums here.

2021 - Born To Be  King

2020 - Girl You Need A Change Of Mine
He topped the BandCamp R&B chart in 2020 with a cover of Eddie Kendricks - Girl You Need A  Change Of Mind (recorded in 1972), released on 23 Oct 2020.  It doesn't appear to have been posted on YT but you can listen to snippets of 3 different mixes (and buy it) on BandCamp

A single only release from 2017 available on Amazon

2016 - Live @ Palace Theatre, Waterbury, CT
Here's some footage of him performing live with legendary jazz saxophonist Najee

2016 from Smooth

If You Leave Me Now - a cover of Chicago's 1976 hit

2011 - I Found Me Somebody
From the 2011 EP Love On The Rocks which also included 'On The Rocks' and 'Swagger', all later released on 2016 album 'Smooth'

2007 from Electrically Speaking:

Manhattan Transfer [1984] - Mystery [Atlantic #7-89695]

Manhattan Transfer have always been a bit of a 'guilty pleasure' from first hearing their music in the mid/late 70s. They did a few Motown covers which is probably what made me first notice them; Four Tops/Kim Weston 'Helpless' (which was the release before their UK #1 hit with Chanson D'amour in 1976),  'Where Did Our Love Go' and quite a bland cover of The Ad Libs' The Boy From New York City.

In the mid 70s there was a movement that emulated the 30s/40s jazz-swing band era typified by Dr Buzzard's Original Savannah Band created by Stony & Thomas Browder (aka August Darnell aka Kid Creole). Manhattan Transfer also fell in this category with much of their material at the time especially Chanson D'amour.

The featured track is a song written by Rod Temperton and recorded by Anita Baker on her classic 1986 album Rapture. Manhattan Transfer released it on their 1983 album 'Bodies And Souls' and then as a single in 1984. It just missed the US Hot 100 (#103) but made #6 on US Adult conteporary chart, but did nothing anywhere else, so is possibly not particularly well known. This recording sits firmly within the 'Yacht Soul' category.

FinalsRadio [2020] - Hea To Stay [2001Finals]

Now, this is an different one! It's a 'mash up' of various samples. The main one being an 80s rare groove stepper from Linda Clifford - Never Gonna Stop, an album only track from her 1979 album Here's My Love.

Hot Steppa samples starts off sampling Alicia Myers - I Want To Thank You and them moves into Whispers - Serious and then what sounds like Cameo.

Interesting from the perspective of deciphering all the samples used!

The full album 'Stuck' For A Moment' is here and FinalsRadio (aka Zud Juda) has a Soundcloud page.

Carl Newsom T.I.N. Man [2020] - Heavens' Tears [Mirror Image]

Debut single from The T.I.N. Man Carl Newsom. T.I.N. stands for The Incredible Newsom. Song written by Carlos Glover and Nadine Rivers-Johnson who is also on background vocals.

You can read more about hime at mirrorimageatl.com.

I've put the 'video' up but I think the 'official' release seems a tighter production.

Oli Silk Feat. Elle Cato [2020] - U Bring Me Joy [Trippin 'n Rhythm]

Best track from his latest album '6' released 29 May 2020.

Oli Silk is a UK smooth jazz keyboadist with Elle Cato featuring on vocals on this track.

Elle is from Croydon and is currently a backing singer for Jamiroquai. As well as being a backing vocalist on The Voice, she has also backed Robbie Williams, Anastacia, Lisa Stansfield and Will Young. She released a few singles in 2015 and her debut(?) album 'Who Am I' in 2016. In July last year she released a house version of Jennifer Holliday's 'And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going' with John Morales.

The remaining tracks on the album are smooth piano jazz instrumentals.

Kloud 9 [2020] - Keep This Fire Burning / 21 Days [D3 Entertainment/UAMG / Expansion]

Kloud 9 have a previously unreleased track on the new Luxury Soul Family 2021 compilation just released on 8 Jan 2021 on Expansion and were in UK Soul Chart last year with 21 Days, which I don't think I've posted previously, so they are both here.

Kloud 9 are the Duffie twins, Kelvis and Kendall, from Nashville, TN, who have been performing Gospel since 1987 and were picked up by Ralph Tee's Expansion label in 2002 and have since released 5 albums and a handful of singles on the label.

Mytus [2020] - Cali [Mytus] (Full Album)

From the album 'Rebirth' released 21 Dec 2020,  I've chosen to post 'Cali' but you can hear the album here.
