Anthony Hamilton [2023] - Best Of Me (DJ Soulchild Remix) [Humble Savage Records]

DJ Soulchild (aka Denny Sutton) has been teasing us with his latest mix on social media for a week or two. It gets a release via Bandcamp today. 

It's a remix of Anthony Hamilton's 2011 album track "Best Of Me" from "Back To Love".

He appears to have blended in elements of Howard Johnson's 1982 two-stepper "Keepin' Love New", and very effective it is too.

UPDATE: DJ Soulchild has just uploaded "Essential DJ Soulchild Vol. 2" on his Bandcamp channel which is a compilation his best remix work between 2017-23. It includes this Anthony Hamilton mix and another well worth checking out is Canita feat. Noel Gourdin "No Love (DJ Soulchild Remix)" which samples Teddy P's "Come Go With Me". Another samples Maze and others Michael Wycoff and Fat Larry's Band but we'll let you figure those out.

Al Green [2023] - Perfect Day [Fat Possum Records]

A new single from Al Green on Matthew Johnson's Oxford, MS, based Fat Possum Records was released on 21 Aug. It's the Rev.'s version of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day". 

In Dec '20 he released "Before The Next Teardrop Fall" for the label which began life as a country song first recorded by Duane Dee in 1967. We featured it only last month in the Creative Funk Discography as it was also recorded by The Limelites on Creative Funk in 1975.

In between both singles Fat Possum released "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy) (Orchestral)" (Aug '21) from a later album "Give Me More Love (The Orchestral Greatest Hits)" (Sep '21).

The label has also reissued many of Green's albums over the years since it was set up in the late 90s.

We have to go back to 2008 and "Lay It Down" for his last set of original material for Blue Note. Green is now 77 so we wonder whether there are likely to be any more new albums, although his voice still sounds good on the latest recording, but of course we don't know when it was actually recorded?

Aphrose [2023] - Roses [LRK Records] PROMO

The new single from Toronto's Aphrose (Joanna Mohammed) is "Roses" set for release on Friday (25 Aug). It follows "Ya Ya" (7 Jul) and "Good Love" (19 May) and is the title track of her sophomore album due on LRK Records later this year.

The song was written by Aphrose with her long time musical collaborator, Scott McCannell (SafeSpaceShip) and guitarist Heather Crawford). It is dedicated to her grandmother, Rose, who has influenced her most and from whom she takes her artist name. It pays homage to her grandmother's remarkable resilience and strength escaping an abusive relationship and emigrating with her children from Trinidad and Tobago to Canada and raising them as a single parent.

It's a delicate, poignant, heartfelt, ethereal and emotional ballad which Aphrose states:

"holds immense significance in my heart, serving as a poignant tribute and a heartfelt love letter to my beloved late grandmother, Rose. A beacon of unyielding strength, she has been my guiding light since childhood, alongside my mother and aunts, who collectively serve as my source of inspiration."

Jalen Ngonda [2023] - So Glad I Found You [Daptone Records]

The fifth, and probably the last, single from Jalen Ngonda's debut album "Come Around and Love Me", before it drops on 8 Sep, is "So Glad I Found You" released today.

This one is a superb, authentic, sweet soul ballad with Jalen's falsetto vocals on display. The album is most certainly building into an essential purchase and will also be available on vinyl.

If you have any doubt that true 'vintage' soul is alive and well in 2023, then this album will surely restore your faith, along with Bobby Harden & The Soulful Saints "Bridge Of Love". Two albums which will almost certainly be in our end of year selections joining October London's "The Rebirth of Marvin".
