South side Chicago born, L.A. resident,
Paulette McWilliams sang with The American Breed who later
became Rufus before introducing them to Chaka Khan when she decided to leave
to give birth to her daughter in 1972 and moving to L.A. She has worked with
soul legends Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, The Jacksons,
Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones.
In 1977 she recorded her debut solo album "Never Been Here Before" on
Fantasy. The album wasn't a commercial success and she spent several
years performing and recording with Johnny Mathis and continued to work
with Quincy Jones and featured on Michael Jackson's, Jones produced,
"Off The Wall" album. After working with Mathis she became a
member of Bette Midler's backing group, The Harlettes, and was
introduced to Luther Vandross who she worked with between 1982-2002
and appeared on every tour and album except his last.
As a backing singer, McWilliams has, as well as artists already
mentioned, featured on many recordings for artists such as Candi
Staton, O.C. Smith, Harvey Mason, Mandrill, Becker Bros., Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Carl Anderson, Herbie Hancock, Diana Ross, James Ingram,
Thelma Houston, Dennis Edwards, Stephanie Mills, Boz Scaggs, Whitney
Houston, Patti LaBelle and many others.
McWilliams' latest album "These Are The Sweet Things", released today by Expansion Records, is a collaboration with with
her former husband Ivan Hampden Jr, who was a drummer for Luther Vandross and a four
time Grammy winner. As well as Luther's albums, he has appeared on
recordings by Ashford & Simpson, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, The
Temptations, Beyonce, Mavis Staple and Ann Nesby to name some of
the more famous ones. They released a single together last year, "Mama's Kitchen Table", which is surprisingly not included on the album.
There are so many great tracks that we won't even attempt to
recommend any particular ones as this is one of those rare albums that
you can play from start to finish without being tempted to skip. The
album is sure to receive plenty of rotation on the better radio
shows.
