Roger Williams [2022-06-19] - The Soulsorts Podcast [Podcast #11]

Roger Williams' eleventh podcast of 2022. The last five have been his Record Room sessions consisting of an hour of album tracks followed by an hour of singles. Check them out HERE.

This time out Roger takes stock of some of the best new releases of 2022 titling it "A mid-year 2022 quality new music selection". I am told that this is the first of two parts which consists of 50 tracks so look out for another 50 next week.

Incidentally, I have collated a list of all the tracks featured in this year's Dirty Dozens and so far there are 466 with another two weeks of the half year to go so will probably hit the 500 mark and these are the just the best ones! Crutchfield Jones [2022] - Queen Appeal [Platinum Vybe] OUT NOW!

Originally posted from promo a couple of weeks ago, the new single from Crutchfield Jones was officially released on Friday (17 Jun 2022).

Shireen Crutchfield and Ricky Jones met some 30 years ago at Motown Records in Hollywood, CA. Shireen was the lead singer of the 90’s group The Good Girls, and Ricky the lead singer of Yours Truly. They had the same manager and their paths crossed at many events but it wasn't until they both left Motown that a friendship developed.

Their careers took them in different directions, Shireen modeling and acting and Ricky releasing two solo albums and travelling the world working with various artists such as Nancy Wilson, Faith Hill, The Backstreet Boys, Lionel Ritchie, Babyface, Aaron Neville and others.

Shireen and Ricky married other partners and started families. Their love of music reconnected them some 20 plus years later, both now divorced. They fell in love and married and are now recording together as Crutchfield Jones. Their first single "You’re Not Here (A Christmas Song)" in 2020 followed by "Crazy Ass" and a later remix of it. 

The new single, "Queen Appeal", is a mash-up which uses Sade's debut 1984 single "Your Love Is King". It was produced by  Ricky Jones along with Chad Alexander Wright and Carnell Harrell.

Napoleon Demps [2022] - The Remedy [Industry Music Group] 7" OUT NOW!

Last week I belatedly posted the new single from Industry Music Group by Napoleon Demps (from Flint, MI) with a song, "The Remedy" and stated that I was surprised that it wasn't on their Bandcamp store nor available on vinyl. Well that has now been rectified as it has been posted there today.

The song was written by him and produced by Joey Quinones. A deep soul gem that sounds like it could well have been recorded in the 60s.

Demps appears to have released only four previous singles, all since 2020. His last single "Ice Cream", also on IMG in Feb. this year, is a Ronnie Shannon written song originally recorded by The Dynamics  as "Ice Cream Song" in 1969 on Cotillion and covered by Cody Black in 1971 on Son' Roc. Shannon wrote several songs recorded by Aretha such as "I Never Loved A Man", "Baby I Love You" and "I Can't See Myself Leaving You".

His debut single "Norma Jean" was on Daptone in 2020 which is an original song he wrote with Daptone co-founder Bosco Mann aka Gabriel Roth.

Bill Albright [2022] - Sitting by the Phone [Self Released]

A new interpretation of an all time classic originally recorded by Billy Stewart on Chess in 1965. Released today (21 Jun 2022) and retitled from "Sitting In The Park" to "Sitting By The Phone" by Bill Albright.

It appears to be the first release from Bill who is from Suwanee, GA. I had a check for him on Discogs and there are three Bill Albrights listed and one's described as a 'hornist' which amused me!

I did manage to find him on facebook and his real name is Anthony Bills.

Mya Noél [2022] - More Than I Am [Lowerkey Records]

A quirky little neo soul number from Mya Noél "More Than I Am" released today. Some of the lyrics sound familiar (or at least similar) to a 90s hip-hop tune by Skee-Lo "I Wish", which sampled the recently  deceased Bernard Wright's "Spinning", which in turn was sampled by Even Funkier in Feb 2022).

It looks like only her second single, the first "Problematic" being released on 28 Feb 2022. However I did find another on Bandcamp "Mya's Favourite Things" (yes it is THAT song!)  from Dec 2021. All released on Lowerkey Records which is based in Durham, NC, so assume that she is from those parts?

Her voice sound very young, especially on the first single which is perhaps why I can find no social media links?
