Soul Strutter: 09/03/21

Home grown blue-eyed soul from Mark Sullivan from Hitchin (Hertfordshire). It may not be to everyone's liking, as The Persuaders sung 'it's a thin line between love (soul) and hate (pop)', but I've listened to it a few times now and it's grown on me. Although it gets a bit acoustic (folk) and rock guitar in places, there's no denying that it's 'soulful' but perhaps not enough for the purists?

JKabel [2021] - Collective Thoughts [Self Released] (Full Album)

JKabel (aka Jarod K. Holloway) from Florida released his fourth album "Collective Thoughts" today (3 Sep 2021).

I've not had the chance to listen to it in full as yet but on a quick skim through "Without A Care", "Live Right" and "Anchor" appear to be the standouts along with, of course, the current single "It Will Be All Be Over".

Roxane Gelis & R3Mi [2021] - Thank U [Self Released] (Full EP)

Roxane Gelis is from Mulhouse France and debuted in 2019 with a single and followed with a 7 track EP/album. On 19 Aug 2021 she released a five track EP "Thank U", three of the tracks are sung in French. For me, the title track is the best track but it's a rather good neo soul EP if you can cope with non-English vocals!

Checking out her YouTube channel it would seem that a few of these tracks are several years old e.g. there are videos for "Toujours les memes" and a teaser for "La Flemme" from 2013

La Arménica Feat Chucky De Ipola [2021] - It's Bad You Know [Self Released]

A real 'left-fielder' (i.e. marmite tune) that has been burning up Northern Soul dancefloors in the last decade is a predominantly blues track by R.L. Burnside from a 1998 album "Come On In" called "It's Bad You Know" (it's played speeded up around +4). It was played on the first series of The Sopranos in 1999 and features on the soundtrack.

It was an album only track first played around 2009/10 until legally pressed on a Pyramid 7" (approx. 2010/11) by Eddy Edmundson to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Only 100 were produced and the last two copies to sell on Discogs have sold for £200!

Whether that has influenced this strange cover version (which has elements of jazz-hop and is predominantly instrumental with chants in Spanish) or not I don't know, but I somehow doubt it as, from what I can ascertain, La Arménica hail from Argentina. Formed by vocalist, harmonica player Ruben Vaneske (Vaneskeheian) in 2016 who was previously with La Mississippi (aka Mississippi Blues Band) also from Argentina.

It will be interesting to see if this gets any traction on the scene, I somehow doubt it, but posted out of interest and intrigue!

For some odd reason The Old Grey Whistle Test theme sprung to mind listening to this! i.e. "Stone Fox Chase" by Area Code 615, but probably only because of the harmonica similarities!

Carmichael Musiclover [2021] - Slow Motion [One Mic] (Full Album)

Officially released on 25 Aug 2021 on his website, Carmichael Musiclover's (aka Antoine Carmichael) latest album "Slow Motion" is now available on DSPs as of 1 Sep 2021. I posted links to his website for it on 21 Aug and it is already the most viewed post on the blog in the last week by a country mile.

The track that seems to be getting most attention is "Know You Better", but there are so many great tracks it would be easier to list the weaker ones, but there really aren't that many from the seventeen tracks!

After several barren weeks for quality tunes, this album is a blessing and is almost certainly going to be #1 on Global Soul chart (and quite rightly so) in the weeks to come (if not this week) as it has already entered last week after only a few days of being released on his website.

A superb album and great 'bang for your buck' as there are seventeen tracks for only £7.99, just buy it!
