I almost skipped past this from the title and the artwork assuming
that it was likely to be lightweight poppy R&B, however, I didn't and was
pleasantly surprised.
Charli Dahni is a new name to me but she has released two
albums, two EPs and four singles since 2019. Her music isn't what I was
expecting on first appearance and is quite edgy and jazzy neo soul not the
pop R&B anticipated. You know what they say ... don't judge a book
etc.
I skimmed through a lot of her material before I came across The
Ambassadors "I Really Love You" intro sample 'yet again' on the first
track of her second album "Seventeen" on "Stay Or Go"!
Her latest release "Pink Stilletto" is a five track EP (released 11 Aug 2021). The best track, for me, is
"Time Goes On" (which I think could do well if DJs get behind it) but those who like
it a bit more R&B flava'd will probably appreciate the full EP.
Charli Dahni has just turned 18 and debuted in 2019 with a three track EP
of self-written songs titled "Metamorphosis" (she appears to use her real name Charli Temoney for writing credits
and has a YouTube channel with that name). She is a classically trained
singer from Washington D.C. with a background in jazz, R&B neo soul
and gospel and has been singing since she was 6 years old.
I've included a 35 minute live performance from last Sep (2020). She starts off with one
her songs from her debut album "A Poem About A Butterfly" called "Love Yourself" and follows it with covers of Lauryn Hill ("Doo Wop (That Thing)") and Erykah Badu ("Didn't Cha Know"). Then there's a couple of tracks from her second album "Seventeen", "Stay Or
Go" (referred to above), "Meditate" and then "Purple Orchids" and "Power" from her debut
album and finishes with "Fr This Time" from "Seventeen".
