The Jous Band [2022] - I Like It / You [Blues 247 Record]

Here we have a double-sider from The Jous Band with "I Like It" (which I'm afraid I don't particularly) and "You" the much preferred side.

They have two albums and two singles to their name since 2020 but also a single dating back to 2009. In fact delving deeper they were known simply as Jous and have listings on Discogs for a 1994 album "Pronounced Joe-Us" and three singles from the 90s.

The mainstays of the band are brothers Darryl O Brown (DB), James I Brown (Jayibee) who's names are on writers credits for both new songs along with sister Sheila and drummer Antonio Owens. Reading the bio on their website it states that both brothers were diagnosed with prostate cancer within 2 years of each other in 2017 and 2019 respectively.

Brief Encounter [2022] - What About Love / Got A Good Feeling [Expansion #EXS027]

Brief Encounter were a group from North Wilkesboro, NC, formed in the 70s, originally as Sounds of Soul, who recorded through to the 90s with various labels. They are probably best known for their classic "Human" but their albums are quite sought after with original copies of their only two albums fetching several hundred pounds.

In January Athens Of The North released a digital and vinyl compilation of  Brief Encounter "Brief Encounter Singles" which includes both of the sides of a new 7" vinyl release on Expansion.

"What About Love" was their fifth single release and their first on Capitol in 1976 having released all their previous singles on Seventy-Seven. Their next, and last, Capitol single in 1977 contained "Got A Good Feeling" as the B side (which also appeared as a longer version on their first album "Introducing - The Brief Encounter" (1977) on Seventy-Seven). Both songs were written by band members Gary (Bernard) Bailey (bass/keyboards) and Montie Bailey (vocals).

Original copies of each record are currently selling for around £150-£200.

Other new releases from Expansion include:

EXS026 - Thelma Houston - Nothing Left To Give / Baby Mine
EXS027 - Brief Encounter - What About Love / Got A Good Feeling
EXS028 - Corey Blake - How Can I Go On Without / Your Love Is Like A Boomerang
EXS029 - Chuck Jackson - Waiting In Vain / No Tricks
EXS030 - Freda Payne - Tell Me Please / I Get High (On Your Memory)
EXS031 - Family Brown - Never Had A Love / Listen

Mary Mundy [2022] - Love Me, Love Me / Love Is Gone (Patchouli Brothers Edits) [Dodo Records #DODO1]

The Patchouli Brothers are DJ/producers Dylan-Thomas Childs and John McLeod from Toronto who have just set up their own new label Dodo. The first releases on 12" vinyl are edits of two Mary Mundy tracks.

The first is "Love Me, Love Me" from her sole album "Mother Nature" 1980 which was also released on 12" with two mixes the same year. It has a very Bohannon style groove.

The other side is the flip side of her 1982 12" version of Holland, Dozier, Holland's "Stop In The Name Of Love" with her self-penned song "Love Is Gone".

Available digitally and on 12" vinyl.

Little Anthony & The Imperials [2022] - Better Use Your Head / Gonna Fix You Good (Everytime You’re Bad) [Outta Sight #SEV010]

The second of two Northern Soul classics reissued on 7" vinyl from Outta Sight is Little Anthony & The Imperials with "Better Use Your Head" and "Gonna Fix You Good (Everytime You’re Bad)".

Both sides were originally released as separate singles on Veep in 1966 and also both written by Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike and appeared on their "Payin' Our Dues" album.

Like the Garnet Mimms double-sider, both sides here failed to make any impact on the R&B chart although "Gonna Fix You Good" was an early spin at Manchester's Twisted Wheel club and "Better Use Your Head" was a huge sound all over the country in 1975 which is arguably the year Northern Soul really peaked with weekly all-nighters at Wigan Casino, Cleethorpes Pier and St Ives (was Yate going by this time as well?) and of course Blackpool Mecca's Highland Room before the modern soul 'split'.

Garnet Mimms [2022] - Looking For You / As Long As I Have You [Outta Sight #SEV009]

The first of two new 7" vinyl reissues on Outta Sight which must be aimed at new Northern Soul collectors as anyone who's been into NS for any length of time must surely have these in their collections already in some format?

A stalwart tune from the very early days of The Twisted Wheel is this evergreen from Garnet Mimms with "Looking For You" paired with another track off the 1966 "Warm And Soulful" album on United Artists, "As Long As I Have You". Both were also released as singles before the album release in 1966 (Discogs is a year out as 45Cat lists "Looking For You" as Oct 1965) and neither charted not even on the R&B chart.

I nearly spat out my coffee when I looked up the value of "As Long As I Have You" as they have sold on Discogs for 4 figures with a top price of nearly £1,300, with "Looking For You" weighing in with a top price of a 'measly' £200. The former was only ever released as a single in France which would explain why it never charted in US.

Family Brown [2022] - Never Had A Love / Listen [Expansion #EXS031]

There really is very little new of any consequence or quality around this week so it looks like today is likely to be a retro day.

To kick off then is another vinyl reissue from Expansion by Family Brown with two in-demand rare groove tracks ("Never Had A Love" / "Listen") taken from their only album "Imaginary World" released in 1978 by United Artists which are due for release on 25 Mar 2022.

Before being named Family Brown they recorded two sweet soul/lowrider singles as The Compacts "Call Her" / "You've Got To Get It" (BunBea 1972) and "Why Can't It Be" / "That's How My World Began" (Carla 1973).

Both songs on the Expansion release were written by Gary Brown (bass) who along with siblings Renee (vocals), Anthony (sax) and Joseph (bass) made up the group along with Donny Lewis (guitar). Prior to Family Brown, Joseph Brown was bassist with Side Effect (billed as Joe 'Bunch' Brown) and, according to Discogs, was a long time collaborator on Wayne Henderson (The Crusaders) productions. Also, the same year the Family Brown album was released he featured on Starguard's self-titled debut album which included their hit "Theme From 'Which Way Is Up'".
