This one is a bit of a puzzler as on all DSP's it states that the debut
album from J'Cenae "Decency" was released on 1 Sep 2021 but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as on her
facebook page she is advertising the album launch party on 20 Nov 2021
(and that was the date stated on the previous post for her single) and it
was only uploaded on YouTube on Monday 8 Nov! J'Cenae has confirmed that it was released last Friday 5 Nov 2021 but it seems to have gone under the radar!
J'Cenae (aka Jacqueline Cenae Williams) is from Rolling
Fork, Mississippi, and auditioned for American Idol in 2004. In 2010 she toured with
the late Marvin Sease. After his passing in 2011 she started to focus on
her solo career and she released her debut single "Good Stuff" in 2016.
In 2018 she was taken under the wing of Wendell B (Brown) and appeared
in shows with him and in 2019 released a single "I'll Be Down In A Minute" which featured Wendell B (video below). Her first single since then
is "I Ain't No Side Piece Lover" released on 25 Aug 2021.
This is a superb album for lovers of real soul music. Most definitely the album of the week and most likely to be the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week as things currently stand. Contemporary southern soul with some lovely deep cuts. Wendel B features on three tracks (1,2,9) and Kami Hooligann on two (3,7).
I really am struggling trying to choose the standouts as all tracks are good in their own right. It really is an album you can just leave playing all through. Any selections would only be personal choices anyway so I'll let you choose your own without influence.
If really pressed, and after a few listens, I think I'd have to plump for "On The Avenue" as my choice cut.
