Northern Soul Fever #1 - Megamix of Classics

Here's a 60 minute mix I did several years ago and posted on YouTube, but it got blocked so I posted them on Mixcloud.

Not for the 'purists' as it's full of 'classics' i.e. Top 500 ... but it's beat and key matched so may be good for a party!

Candi Staton [1970] - Now You've Got The Upper Hand / You Can't Stop Me [Unity #U-7-11]

Another Northern Soul rarity.  This is believed to be the first recording by Candi Staton, recorded in 1967 but not released until 1969/70 (45Cat states May 1970).  A comment left on Discogs says that it was released after she had some success on Fame, but was withdrawn as Fame had an agreement with Unity when she signed to prevent any of her earlier records being released.  This would be a reason why the record is rare.

There is only one other release listed for Unity, a label based in Birmingham, Alabama, Underground Euphoria Featuring Keisa Brown - What Can I Do About You / Keisa Brown And Underground Euphoria - Let's Go Back (To Our Little World) also claimed on 45Cat to be released May 1970.  I thought that this might be equally as rare but have found a recently ended ebay listing (ended only a week ago on 11 Dec) from Craig Moerer listing it for £78.42 and described as funk.  It had a sound file which has unfortunatley now been removed.  There's also another listed for £50 - so probably not rare or 'in demand'!

There's about a dozen Candi Staton's on Popsike consistently selling for just over £1,000, the latest sold in Jan 2020 for £1,404.

Both sides were written by Bo Fowler (aka Robert Fowler), who has a few other songs registered with BMI, although I don't recognise any of them, and produced by Bob Grove and Richard Dingler.  I wonder if this Bob Grove is also known as Bob Groves (aka Robert Grove) as if so, he produced a few sides for Sam Dees on LoLo in 1969.

Candi Staton [1970] - Now You've Got The Upper Hand [Unity #U-7-11]

This was big in the mid 70s.  It was certainly played around 1976 and was so popular it was bootlegged on a look alike (counterfeit) label that year.

Candi Staton [1970] - You Can't Stop Me [Unity #U-7-11]

Back then the B side would have been instantly dismissed as being too slow, but listening to it now it could easily get spins these days.

Thelma Houston [1973] - Nothing Left To Give [Mowest #MWS 7003]

A quick post as just reminded of how good this is from a recent podcast I was listening to.  Not released as a single (as far as I can tell unless it's a reissue) and wasn't on the US release of the self-titled album on Mowest from 1973.

What a wonderful set of pipes on this, so soulful, deep/crossover track.  She's probably best (only?) known to a mass audience for her cover of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - Don't Leave Me This Way a #1 hit in US and #13 in UK 1977.  HM & Blue Notes version (billed as Harold Melvin & Blue Notes Featuring Teddy Pendergrass) from Wake Up Everybody LP, wasn't released as a single in US and pipped Houston's version in UK by reaching #5 a couple of weeks earlier!

Debbie Taylor - Discography

I had the privilege of seeing Debbie Taylor (now known as Maydie Myles) in her first and only live UK appearance at the Wilton (Wakefield) in Nov 2013.  There are 6 video clips I recorded and posted on my YouTube channelKarl 'Chalky' White has also posted some on his channel.  The eagle eyed amongst you may spot Mick Talbot of The Style Council on keyboards!

There seems to be 2 versions of this CD, one is an identical 9 track version of her first album on Today and the other is a extended 20 track (perhaps Deluxe) version which also includes her 2 Decca 45s, her unreleased 'All That I Have' and all her GWP releases.

If you want to listen all in one go then someone has uploaded the complete CD on YouTube (unless he's 'doctored' the image and included her earliar material .. as I can't find any reference to this release?)

I Don't Wanna Leave You

This 1975 45 is probably her finest with 2 brilliant sides. The A side 'I Don't Wanna Leave You' is one of the best deep soul records you will find along with a great modern soul tune 'Just Don't Pay' on the flip.

Just Don't Pay

All That I Have

This is a previously unissued single she recorded with The Hesitations, produced by Larry Saunders.  It originally came out as an album track on GWP NYC TCB on Kent in 2005 who then released it on a vinyl 45 coupled with the fantastic Eddie Parker - But If You Must Go on their Deep Soul imprint in 2016.
