R.I.P. - Jim Stewart (Stax Records) (29 Jul 1930 - 5 Dec 2022)

The co-founder of one of the most iconic and beloved soul labels of the 60s and 70s, Jim Stewart, died on Monday 5 Dec 2022 aged 92.
He formed Satellite Records in 1957 primarily as a country and rockabilly label run out of a two car garage in Brunswick, TN. He was later joined by his sister Estelle Axton (11 Sep 1918 - 25 Feb 2004) who financed the purchase of professional recording equipment. In 1959 the company moved to Memphis and rented the former Capitol Theatre at 926 E McLemore Avenue and in 1961 was renamed to Stax which is an acronym of the first two letters of each's surname. The site is now the Stax Museum since 2003, after being demolished in 1989, with the original facade being reconstructed.
Stewart was born on a farm and joined a local country group. He worked first in a department store and then a bank before being drafted into the army for two years and went back into banking in 1953.

Satellite had their first regional hit in 1960, a duet between Rufus Thomas and his 16 year old daughter Carla on "Cause I Love You" which Carla followed with "Gee Whizz" which was #5 R&B and #10 Hot 100 (allegedly selling 500k copies). The following year Estelle persuaded Jim to release a song by her son, Packy's, band The Mar-Keys and another hit ensued with an instrumental "Last Night" which became the label's biggest hit reaching #2 R&B and #3 Hot 100. Apparently, it was this hit that prompted the change of name as when the record reached the west coast Jim was notified that there was another label named Satellite and Stax was born. Ironically another Satellite label emerged in Chicago in 1965 as an offshoot of St. Lawrence! Then of course there is the Mod anthem "Green Onions" by Booker T & The M.G.'s followed by many other hits. By 1965 Stewart had quit his day-time job in the bank to focus on Stax full time.
Estelle ran the customer facing part of the business selling records with Jim in the back in the studio. Many of the label's artists initially came in as customers. It's quite remarkable when you think of the times as American was in the grips of the Civil Rights movement and segregation in the 'Jim Crow' south, yet blacks and whites worked together in harmony. The majority of the musicians used were mainly white whilst the singers were mainly black.
In 1968, just after the death of Otis Redding, and four members of his band The Bar-Kays, in a plane crash on 10 Dec 1967, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis (4 Apr 1968) and the end of a distribution deal with Atlantic Records, Axton sold her share of the business and Al Bell joined Stewart running the company. Stewart then sold his share to Bell in 1972 and the company started to fail a year later with Stewart stepping in to try and save it but, with rising debts and a dispute with CBS who were distributing the label, the company went under. Another factor was that a distribution deal Stewart had signed with Atlantic, which he hadn't read properly, meant that, when they parted company, Atlantic retained ownership of all the masters. Stax went bankrupt in 1975 eventually being relaunched by Fantasy Records who bid for the company at an auction in 1977. Although some new material was released, they mainly reissued back catalogue.

The company was bought by Concord Music Group in 2008 who signed Jill Scott, Angie Stone and Leela James.

According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Stax released around 300 albums and 800 singles with 167 Billboard Hot 100 and 243 R&B hits between 1959-75.

The Stax roster included some now legendary figures: Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & The M.G.'s, Johnnie Taylor, William Bell, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes, Eddie Floyd, The Staple Singers, Soul Children, Dramatics, Emotions, Rance Allen Group, Shirley Brown and many more, not forgetting the writing team of Hayes and Porter.

In 2002 Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Sam Moore (Sam & Dave). He did not attend the ceremony having his granddaughter instead accept the honour on his behalf.

Brenda Jones (The Jones Girls) - A Profile

Brenda Jones (7 Dec 1954 - 3 Apr 2017) of The Jones Girls would have been 68 today had she not been tragically killed when run down by several cars crossing the road whilst visiting her daughter in Wilmington, Delaware in Apr 2017.
She had become good friends with Starpoint Radio presenter and UK radio promoter, Gary Van Den Bussche, in Jul 2013  when it was reported that she had become homeless. Gary raised a campaign on his DSG facebook page which resulted in her being moved from a shelter to a hotel and then later to a new home with her daughter and granddaughter. She was speaking about returning to a career in music.

Gary has provided much of the information given here.

As part of The Jones Girls, Brenda sang the lead vocals on many of their classic's including "This Feelings Killing Me", "You Made Me Love You", "You're Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else", "Life Goes On", "We're A Melody", "I'm at your Mercy", "Dance Turned Into a Romance", "I Close My Eyes", "When I'm Gone", "ASAP", "Lets Be Friends First", "What a Fool", "I Can Make A Difference", "Why You Wanna do That To Me", "AH AH AH AH" plus the co-Lead on "Nights over Egypt" among others.

The list of artists the Jones Girls have sung with is like a who's who is Soul music, but included Leon Haywood, Lamont Dozier, Norman Connors, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Jean Carn, Phyllis Hyman, Lou Rawls, Curtis Mayfield, Prince Phillip Mitchell, Linda Clifford, The Four Tops and many others. Brenda features on recordings by the likes of Ben E. King, Teddy Pendergrass, McFadden & Whitehead, Peabo Bryson, Leon Huff and Norman Connors.

The Jones Girls' performances with Diana Ross opened many doors for the girls. Ross gave them a brief interlude in her show where they would sing "If I Ever Lose This Heaven". Kenny Gamble of Philadelphia International Records and singer Patti LaBelle were in the audience during a Philadelphia performance, and after the show, Ross introduced them to The Jones Girls and the group signed with Philadelphia International in early 1979 and the rest they say is history.

Brenda spent a lot of time concentrating on her family life. Her last release was "What Your Love Has Done" which was originally written, produced and arranged by Dewey Andrew in 2007 and co-produced by the late George Mena. However, the song was left in the can after the sad loss of George Mena, until 2013 when Dewey Andrew decided this needed to be released. Brenda Jones went back in the studio to add some extra vocal touches with Dewey, giving the song that magical touch, that charted on the UK Soul charts reaching #1 in many of them. Unfortunately this was Brenda's only solo release.

Apparently, it was no secret that she did not get on with her sister Shirley but, owing to the Sister Sledge family dispute, they made up and talked about touring again as The Jones Girls.

Courtesy of Brenda Jones and DSG here's an unreleased song "Give Me What I Need" along with a playlist of the songs above on which Brenda performed lead vocals.

Atlantic Starr - A Profile

Following the birthday post for Atlantic Starr lead singer Barbara Weathers, I felt it appropriate to do a feature on the group as well as many of their earlier recordings were done without her as she replaced Sharon Bryant in 1984 after they had already recorded five albums.
Atlantic Starr evolved from Newban who were classmates at Woodland High School, Hartsdale NY, who recorded two albums, "Newban" and "Newban 2" which were unofficially released on Guinness in 1977. They moved to L.A. (Westwood) and were spotted performing in a nightclub as Newban and were signed to Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss' A&M Records in 1977. Upon signing they were asked to change their name and chose the name Atlantic Starr to represent their east coast connection.

The group initially consisted of nine, trimming down to seven and then five and I think eventually a quartet. The embryo of the group began in the early 70s when the three Lewis brothers (David, Jonathan and Wayne) all led separate groups, Newban, Exact Change and Unchained Youth. The groups amalgamated into one with the Lewis brothers, Wayne (keyboards / vocals), Jonathan (trombone / percussion) and  David (guitar / vocals) along with William Suddeeth III (trumpet), Clifford Archer (bass), Joseph Phillips (congas / flute / percussion), Porter Carrol Jr. (drums / vocals) and Sharon Bryant (vocals / percussion) and Damon Rentie (sax) who was later replaced by Koran Daniels (sax).

The two Newban albums were combined and reissued by BBE in 2012 on vinyl and CD. Soul4Real also released two tracks from "Newban2" as a 7" single earlier this year.

Their first album as Atlantic Starr was self-titled, produced by MFSB's Bobby Eli and released in 1978 on A&M. They released a further five albums for A&M until 1985 then switching to Warner Bros. for two albums between 1987-89. Another four albums were released in the 90s all on different labels and finally one as recently as 2017.

Five members left the group in 1984 leaving the three Lewis brothers and Phillips. They recruited Barbara Weathers to replace Sharon Bryant (who went on to a solo career) and hit with the ballad "Secret Lovers". Inevitably, due to the success of that single, the group tended to focus on slushy ballads and had a #1 hit with another, "Always", in  1987 and "Masterpiece" in 1991 reaching #3 (their three most successful singles). Weathers and Wayne Lewis got engaged which caused further tension in the group leading to disputes over royalties and she left in 1988.

The group continued recording through the 90s with different female leads releasing four more albumsPorscha Martin on "We're Movin' Up", Rachel Oliver on "Love Crazy" and Aisha Tanner for "Time" with Oliver returning for "Legacy".

After an almost twenty year hiatus, they released "Metamorphosis" in 2017.

Barbara Weathers (Atlantic Starr) - A Profile

Barbara Weathers (7 Dec 1963) was born in Greensboro, NC,  on 7 Dec 1963 and is therefore 59 today. She is perhaps best known as being Sharon Bryant's replacement in Atlantic Starr in 1984 after they were approached by MCA Records to produce demos of two songs, "Secret Lovers" and "Silver Shadow", for her. MCA subsequently declined the demos but Atlantic Starr saw her potential and asked her to join the group. Both songs were released on their "As The Band Turns" album and "Secret Lovers" went on to be their biggest hit to date reaching #3 on the Hot 100 in 1985 with "Silver Shadow" just missing out on the UK Top 40 at #41.
Weathers appeared on one more Atlantic Starr album "All In The Name Of Love" which spawned their #1 hit "Always" in 1987.

In 1989 Weathers left the group to pursue a solo career and in 1990 released a self-titled debut solo album produced by Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White. She followed it in 1995 with "Seeing For the Very First Time" produced by Jeff Weber and released on his Weber Works label in Japan only which apparently sold out in the first week of release.

Her third album "Satisfaction Guaranteed" was also released by Weber Works in Aug 2011 which seems quite hard to find as does her other Weber Works album.

As with so many soul singers, Barbara began singing in church at the age of seven and honed her craft singing with a number of local groups and by the age of thirteen was a member of Covacus. She joined Atlantic Starr in 1984. Up until this time the group, whilst having numerous R&B chart hits, had only two moderate Hot 100 successes with "Circles" (#38) and "Touch A Four Leaf Clover" (#87).

The playlist below is limited to the tracks from the two Atlantic Starr albums where Weathers sang lead and a few tracks from her debut solo album as unfortunately her other two solo albums are not available on Spotify.

There are a couple of rather grainy video, presumably dubbed from video tape, of two of four solo singles released from her self-titled 1990 album.
