Steve Aggasild's latest show for State Of The Art Radio (SOTAR) broadcast on Wednesday 19th Jun 2023 between 20:00-22:00 GMT.

This week Steve showcases the latest Soul Associates Top 30 for Week 28 (w/e 16 Jul 2023).

Gen Bello [2023] - This Again [Self Released] (Full EP)

Independent singer/songwriter Gen Bello was previously known by simply her full Christian name, Geneses, releasing two singles in 2018-19 before relaunching herself as Gen Bello with "Intoxicated" in May in 2020. Her debut album in Oct 2021 was also titled "Geneses". 

Gen is from Harlem, NYC, and has her first EP out today, a 5 tracker called "This Again". which is pretty consistent throughout. It contains only her last single "Not Fair" (21 Mar) so four new songs with "Real or Not" and "Tired" being our choices.

Jessie Laine Powell feat. Sam Hankins [2023] - Pure Love [Self Released]

Born in Lexington, KT, Jessie Laine Powell grew up in a gospel household but was soon influenced by jazz through listening to the greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Nancy Wilson. 

Jessie moved to Hollywood, CA, to follow her love of the stage, orchestras and jazz where she was given the opportunity of opening for Nancy Wilson. She has appeared on radio, TV and theatre but after a few years returned to her native Lexington where she teamed up with local producer and jazz artist Eric Copeland and released her debut album "On The Edge" in the summer of 2017. 

The title track was later released as a single in May 2020, followed by "Like No Other" (Aug 2020). Another single, which no longer seems to be available in the usual places, was "Love Supreme" feat. smooth jazz saxophonist Marion Meadows in Mar '21 which received airplay in the UK (perhaps it was promo only?). 

Her first release since then is a single "Pure Love" released on 30 Jun which features trumpeter Sam Hankins.

Yet another female soulful jazz flavoured song entering the fray along with Erica Falls, Felece Tillman and today Lena Loi. We have to say though, the trumpeting of Sam Hankins really adds another dimension to this song. He's a multi-award winning musician and adjunct music professor who has released four albums since deciding to go solo in 2011 and we believe has another due out imminently as he is holding a launch party for it on 30 Jul.

Ashanti Munir [2023] - Soul Flower [BlackSole Records]

The first release from Ashanti Munir since a Rhyze & Shine Remix of  "Early Morning Love" in Sep '22 is "Soul Flower" which we understand is the title track from an upcoming album.

Ashanti Munir is an independent artist originally from Boston, MA, now living in Charlotte, NC. She released her debut album "Balance" in 2008 (from which "I'm Staying Home Tonight" was a modern soul biggie) and followed it up in 2010 with "Soul Of A Woman", both were well received in the UK achieving soul chart top ten status. Her third album followed in 2016 "Lady Munir". She was awarded 'Best New Artist' by SoulTracks in 2010.

Phazed Groove [2023] - (Let Me) Get Under Your Skin [Tropical Disco Records]

I wonder how many will know/remember the original of this sample based single "(Let Me) Get Under Your Skin" by Phazed Groove? It was quite an obscure Latin flavoured disco hit from 1980 by a studio band which included a few heavyweight musicians including Toto guitarist Steve Lukather and Brazilian percussionist Paulinho Da Costa.

It is, of course for those in the know, a reworking of Baby-O's Latin disco stormer "In The Forest" and we think Phazed Groove has given it a new lease of life, it's seriously funky.

Phazed Groove is House, Latin House and Disco producer Brian Hope from Kilmarnock (Scotland) who emerged, under this name at least, in 2019 but has been a musician since 2004.
