Beth Macari [2022] - Circles [Self Released] DUE FRIDAY!

It's been almost a year since we last heard from Beth Macari with "Love You More" last July which followed her dance floor hit "Gotta Get Back" and its Remixes, both UK Soul Chart top 10 songs.  She decided to take a break from music after the bereavement of her grandmother who she was very close to.

Beth, from Newcastle, was a member of Nick Pride & The Pimptones before going solo around 2018 and released her debut album "I Am Everything" in 2020', the lead singe from which, "I Promise (That I Got You)", was a US Soul Chart top 20 hit. 

Discounting remixes, her new single, "Circles", (due 1 Jul 2022) will be around her eleventh single since 2018.

She tells us that "Circles is a song about the pressures of being a woman, in all aspects of life! The worries of getting older, the struggles of working in the music industry, all of the doubts that we all have about the decisions we make day to day".

Chiffon Zoo [2022] - Answers [Slapped Up Soul Records]

Chiffon Zoo is a new Neo Soul Future Soul Collective from London started by Rona Ray, Lee Robinson and Paul Stephenson. They released their debut single "Walking With Wolves" in March and followed it on 17 Jun 2022 with "Answers"

Rona Ray has performed on many top-10 hits on Beatport & Traxsource, and she has also worked with influential artists such as Terry Hunter, Atjazz and has enjoyed the support of some of the big names including MAW's Louis Vega.  She featured on the blog only last month on "Goosebumps" with Yooks.

Lee & Paul have been producing soulful house music together since 2005 with one of their projects using the alias 'Tannoy Kid' signed to Kenny Dope’s NYC 'Dope Wax' label.

Alexander Simone [2022] - Man Down [Truly A Simone Music Group]

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Alexander Simone is a member of  Whodat? Live Crew and is the son of singer/actress Lisa Simone who was the only child of Nina Simone, obviously making Alexender her grandson. He debuted in 2018 and has released two full albums and around ten singles/EPs.

You may recall Liquid Soul's "Dysfunction" (2000). Lisa was the lead singer for that track going by just her chosen surname Simone. (She is actually Lisa Celeste Stroud, Stroud being her father Andrew Stroud's name who married Nina Simone and later became her manager).

His latest release consists of three tracks so whether you want to call it a single, mini EP or EP take your pick.

There is an accompanying video for "Man Down" but I think I prefer track 2 "That Feeling" with the third track "Can't Get Back" probably appealing to those who like the urban side of things as it's more R&B/hip-hop oriented with explicit lyrics.

For "Man Down" Simone contemplates the weight and pressure of life’s daily struggles and describes it as "an emotional song that evaluates my life as we slowly transitioned out of the pandemic. Life hit me from all angles. From bills piling up to family issues. It was a rough patch that stifled my motivation. I felt like a "man down'".

Kaidi Tatham [2022] - Don't Rush The Process [First Word Records]

Midlands based, Belfast born, multi-instrumentist Kaidi Tathum is set to release his fourth solo album "Don't Rush The Process" on 29 Jul 2022. The lead single from it is the title track available today on Bandcamp.

The album follows "An Insight To All Minds" (2021), "It's A World Before You" (2018) and "In Search Of Hope" (2020) as well as with several EPs since 2017 including "Galaxy" released less than two weeks ago on 17 Jun.

The forthcoming album is described as follows: "opens with an intro of sweet strings on 'Mystery Solved', ahead of lead title track, which is on a mid-tempo boom bap vibe, before switching to a more uptempo boogie vein, with the assistance of The Easy Access Orchestra, who also appear on 'We Chillin' Out', which is on a similar boogie tip. 'All I Need' is some gospel flavoured hip hop, whilst 'Knocknee Donkey' steps things up in a jazz-funk fashion. The second half of the album takes on a very Brazilian flavoured stance, with a set of delicious latin flavoured grooves on 'Any Flavour', 'Runnin' Tru', 'What A Dream' and 'Sooretama', the latter featuring the additional prowess of pianist Robert Mitchell. There's a touch more of the hip hop beats thrown in via 'Funky Fool' and the album closes out in inimitable Kaidi style with a short message: 'Mind Yourself'".

OST [2022] - Minions: The Rise of Gru [Decca / Verve] (Album Sampler)

The computer animated comedy film, Minions: The Rise of Gru (the follow up to Minions from 2015) is set for screening on Friday 1 Jul 2022. 

It is set in the 70s and has a soundtrack of, in the main, re-recorded versions of some 70s soul/funk tracks. Five have already been pre-released, the latest by H.E.R. last Friday with an interpretation of Sly & The Family Stone's "Dance To The Music" (1967).

Others, so far released, include Diana Ross & Tame Impala "Turn Up The Sunshine" (19 May which I think is an original song, or at least I don't recognise it as a cover?), St. Vincent  "Funkytown" (3 Jun) (Lipps Inc. 1972), BROCKHAMPTON "Hollywood Swinging" (17 Jun) (Kool & The Gang 1974), Kali Uchis "Desafinado" (27 May) (Ella Fitzgerald 1962).

You can click on album cover for a full listing of the 19 tracks due on Friday (1 Jul). The only one that looks semi-interesting is Brittany Howard with, presumably, a cover of EWF's "Shining Star".

Yousuke Kobayashi Feat. Sho Asano & Kaoru Tominaga [2022] - Crazy About Her.. [yosktp]

Yousuke Kobayashi (aka yoskTp) is a soul/jazz trumpeter from Osaka, Japan. He was inspired to learn to play the trumpet after watching 'The Blues Brothers' movie when he was young.

He has released his first recording "Crazy About Her.." today (29 Jun 2022) which he says he wrote 13 years ago. It features Sho Asano (keyboards) and Kaoru Tominaga on vocals along with KASH (bass) and  Masato Mori (drums).

The vocals are sung in a mix of Japanese and English.
