Ed Motta [2023] - Safely Far [MPS]

Ed Motta is Brazilian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer from Rio De Janeiro and is the nephew of Tim Maia who was instrumental in introducing modern black music to Brazil by linking funk and samba.

After initially experimenting with rock music and being a member of a few bands, Motta went solo in 1990 after his first release "Ed Motta & Conexão Japeri" in 1988. His music isn't strictly soul, he plays virtually anything from classical, Brazilian music / MPB, jazz, rock, reggae to pop.

His latest single, after a five years break, is "Safely Far" It's the lead single from an upcoming 14th studio album "Behind The Tea Chronicles" due on 20 Oct and features Paulette McWilliams and Philip Ingram (brother of James Ingram and one time member of Motown group Switch) on background vocals.

Laronda Alleyne [2023] - Call On Me / (Phillet Of Soul Edit) [Self Released]

A one-off debut release titled "Call On Me" by Laronde Alleyne on 3 Jun discovered by friend of the blog Phil Ward who wasn't best pleased with, what he described as, the 'drum & bass section', so he's produced an edit, included below along with the full length original.

We can find absolutely nothing about Laronda Alleyne. A Google search returned a 50 yr old man living in Brooklyn, if that's the same person?

The Sextones [2023] - Beck & Call [Colemine #CLMN-204] PROMO

This is rather confusing as this song "Beck & Call" is from The Sextones' forthcoming album "Love Can't Be Borrowed" on Record Kicks but is due for release tomorrow by Colemine. It transpires that Colemine has licensed it for release ahead of the album which is due on 29 Sep.

It's a, self-written, retro sweet soul tune that will be available digitally tomorrow and also it appears that it will be released on vinyl on 18 Aug, but no word of what will be on the B side as yet, perhaps an instrumental version?

If you've been following the blog this year then you will know all about The Sextones from Nevada who are signed to Italy's Record Kicks label and produced by Kelly Finnigan of The Monophonics.

Latasha Lee [2023] - We Got A Good Thing [Industry Music Group]

We've been following the music of 38 year old LaTasha Lee for several years, first coming across her on YouTube where she released videos for her independently released music (which now seem to have been removed).

She's from Texas and caught the attention of producer Salih Williams in 2006 aged 21 and signed for his Carnival Beats label. In 2012 she made the last 50 of The X Factor and the following year released her debut, self-titled, album Latasha Lee & The BlackTies.

LaTasha was recently signed to Industry Music Group in Rialto, CA, where she released her debut for the label, a cover of The Lovation's "I Don't Want You" in March on Bandcamp and then gained wider release, including on vinyl with an instrumental flip, in April.

Her second single for the label is "We Got A Good Thing" released today along with a music video for it. Whilst it has her familiar retro vibe, we believe that it's an original, self-written, song.

Theo Forsett [2023] - Love At Your Fingatips [Yon Ti Entertainment]

Hot off the press, released today (4 Jul) is a debut single from Theo Forsett "Love At Your Fingatips".

Born and raised in Bartow, FL, he began singing in the church choir at the age of six. He studied the arts perfecting his singing, dancing, and acting skills while performing in local talent shows and then moved to L.A. to further his career where he registered at Fairfax High School and joined the music department and met classmates and music producers DeYon Dobson and Lance Vantile Whitfield who are both involved in his latest project.

He sang BGVs for Diana Ross, Little Richard and Eddie Murphy and was also getting noticed as a promising actor and landed his first TV pilot and film, in "The Hero".

His writing ability was later recognised and he was contracted to write a screenplay for Warner Bros and proceeded to work on a movie "Back N The Day" and then "Black Beach".

A bit of further digging unearthed that had had roles in several well know US TV series in the 80s / 90s such as Hill St. Blues, Cagney & Lacey, Chips and T.J. Hooker amongst several others.

After taking a hiatus from music to focus on his acting and writing career, he has a debut album, "Love at Your Fingatips", forthcoming and has released the title track as the lead single.

Thanks to Jay Ross for highlighting this release. We are informed that the song was originally recorded by The Gap Band on an album "Ain't Nothin' But A Party" in 1995 and then again in 2001 on an album of the same name (i.e. "Love At Your Fingatips").
