A new signing to Acid Jazz is Mama Terra the brainchild of Glaswegian pianist and composer Marco
Cafolla. The debut album "The Summoned", written and demoed during lockdown, will be released on
Friday.
Three tracks have already been premiered "Ruptura" (17 Mar), "A Mind Supreme" (28 Apr), both free jazz instrumentals, and "Last Hour" (13 Jun) featuring the vocals of Rachel Lightbody. (Live videos of all three below)
Cafolla plays piano and bass keys and used hip hop and modern Jazz
drummer samples to create a rhythm section and, wanting to add an
authentic N.Y.C. vibe to the album, sent the stems to Orangefish
Studio in Brooklyn, NYC where bass (Derek Neivergelt), drums (Evan
Pazner) and trumpet solos (Jeremy Pelt) were recorded live to
tape.
Cafollo and Glasgow musicians Konrad Wiszniewski (sax / flute), Mikey
Owers (trombone), Cameron Jay (flugelhorn), and vocalist Rachel
Lightbody recorded their parts along to the N.Y.C. stems at Glo Worm
Studios, Glasgow.
They tell us that "The Summoned" is a conceptual journey through life and the universe which takes cues from Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane and Erykah Badu.
We'll post the latest single, "Last Hour", prior to the album's full release on Friday on recommendation from
our Scottish brother Steve Aggasild who has been playing it on his
shows for the last couple of weeks and no one else, including us,
seems to have picked up on it, yet.
