A song originally recorded in 1980 by Fat Larry's Band on
"Hands Up" (released as a single in Sep 1980) has been re-recorded by the
latest line-up.
Drummer James formed the group in 1976 and over ten years released nine
albums. Many of their singles were popular in the UK, Charting first with
"Center City", "Looking For Love" and "Zoom" (a UK #2 pop chart hit in 1982). They had another three
UK pop chart hits with covers of "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" and "Don't Let
It Got To Your Head" (a superb version of Jean Carn's Philly gem feat. Freddie Campbell & Monica Thoughton which was a UK & AU single only) along with "Straight To The Heart". Songs like "Act Like You Know" and "Boogie Town" were popular in the clubs. Fat Larry James died in 1987 aged 38 from a heart attack.
The current line-up includes two of the original members, horn man and
original founding member Jimmy Lee and vocalist Art Austin (who has been
with the band since 1979) along with vocalists Dr. Salaam Love and Carl
Gray.
Under the guidance of Society Hill's legendary Philly soul
producer Butch Ingram, they revisit "Can't Keep My Hands To Myself" with a fresh makeover. It's set for release tomorrow (18 Aug).
The song was covered in Dec 1980 by T.S. Monk (a trio formed
by the son of Thelonious Monk, Thelonious Monk Jr with his sister Barbara (aka Boo Boo) and Yvonne Fletcher (who was earlier a member of Natural Essence)) on the flip to their "Candidate For
Love" single from their "House Of Music" LP.
