SoulStrutter Top 20 - 9th Aug 2021

If you recall last week I posted the first SoulStrutter Top 10 for 7 days and 30 days. These are the most viewed posts in those time periods.

Having reviewed the 7 day lists for the last week I have decided that they are too volatile to accurately reflect the true picture so I've decided to publish the 30 day list only. I have also extended it to top 20.

To an extent this list may favour posts that have been live longer as obviously they have been available longer to view but I think over time this should even out as it is a rolling 30 day list. Posts that are only a few days old appearing in the top 20 indicates their popularity e.g. there are three in the top 10 that have only been posted a few days and almost half the list has been posted within the last  ten days.

There are a few anomalies (which I need to iron out) as the blogger logs aren't 100% accurate as Penzillathegreat has the third highest no. of views yet is not showing on the logs for some strange reason. Also First Wives Club compilation is consistently showing in both 7 & 30 day list, but presumably from views from people looking for the actual show rather than the soundtrack so may have visited the post accidentally? It has double the views of the 2nd place!

As a matter of interest Sugar Rainbow is currently topping the 7 days list and only one of the top 10 in 7 day list isn't featured in 30 day list.

Ingrid Arthur [2021] - I Need Your Love [Self Released]

A single getting some love on the Starpoint breakers chart is from Ingrid Arthur "I Need Your Love" which was released 19 Jul 2021.

Interestingly, a track I featured last week "Ultimate Lover", from an album ("Playin' The Cracks") by Kenny Kirby released in April, is also getting attention on the breakers chart. Is it a coincidence?

Ingrid is from Gainsville, GA, but has been based in Berlin since 2003 and it probably won't surprise you to learn that her background is in gospel.

She was a member of The Weather Girls in the noughties (along with original member Izora Armstead's daughter Dynelle Rhodes, replacing Izora after her death in 2004) and recorded on their last two albums "Totally Wild" (2004) and "The Woman I Am" (2009) before she embarked on a solo career in 2011.

Yola [2021] - Dancing Away In Tears (Stand For Myself LP) [Easy Eye Sound]

A track from Yola's sophomore album "Stand For Myself" (released 30 Jul 2021) that is currently getting attention is "Dancing Away In Tears". Having only taken a quick skip through the album, I would have to say that this track is atypical of the remainder of the album which comes across to me as country soul, bordering pop on some tracks (which I guess isn't so surprising as I believe she hails from Nashville). I'm afraid I can't recommend anything else on the album from a purely soul perspective (unless of course you have a bent for country music ... be my guest and polish up your cowboy boots for a hoedown!).

"Dancing Away In Tears", however, has a retro 70s/80s feel right up the street for modern soul lovers.

Digging a  bit deeper into her I've discovered that she is actually from the UK (Bristol) now living in Nashville. She has had four Grammy nominations and was known as "The Country Queen Of Soul" which explains a few things! Her real name is Yolanda Quartey but she goes by several aliases Yola, Yola Carter, Cleeo and Koko and has recordings going back to at least 2003.

Reva DeVito & Midas Hutch [2021] - One Shot [Sequence]

According to her Spotify profile, Reva DeVito 'makes music to make your girlfriend want to take her bra off"! She's another of that band of musicians hailing from Portland, Oregon and has teamed up with Dutch DJ/producer Midas Hutch (aka DJ FS Green who is Franklin Samuel Groen from Amsterdam) for her latest single "OneShot" on 6 Aug 2021.

She also appeared on Midas Hutch's album "The Ride" released in March. Her debut was back in 2010 on a self released EP "The Catnip Collective" and she is (was?) also a member of a duo called Umii with B Bravo (aka Adam Mori a DJ/producer/musician from L.A.)

India Ivonna [2021] - Life After Love [Self Released] (Full Album)

A debut album/EP (seven tracks but priced as an EP at £3.49) "Life After Love" from New York singer India Ivonna (released 30 Jul 2021) who only appears to have released one other single last Sep ("No Excuse") which is included on the album,.

The stand out track is "Tell Me" followed by "No Excuse" and "Why Me". "Sunshine Where" uses elements of Roy Ayers "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" from 1976. 'No excuse' needed to post the original! Vocals by Chicas (aka Debby Darby).

All in all it's a pretty good debut, which may take a couple of listens as I almost dismissed it as R&B on first scan through. Unfortunately I can find no information about her.
