Jaszy Shavers [2024] - Cruel [THE NEW OLD SCHOOL]

The first release by Atlanta's  Jaszy Shavers since her album "Voyage to Surrender" in Sep '23 is a single "Cruel" released today (12 Feb).

We rated the album highly and stated that we thought that it was one of the best neo soul albums of the year and it featured in our 2023 Top 100 Albums of the Year.

The new single certainly doesn't disappoint, it's a breathy, jazzy little neo soul head nodder that bobs along rather nicely.

Avery*Sunshine [2024] - I Wonder [BigShine Recordings]

Avery*Sunshine started the year with a funky singe "Lifted Up" on 1 Jan (music video below) and follows it today with the soulful "I Wonder".

It's now approaching two years since her highly regarded album "Four Songs & Bootleg" since when she's released three EPs and now five singles. With two now in quick succession, we would hazard a guess that a new album may be in the pipeline.

She commences a 21 date U.S. tour this week starting at Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA, on Friday (16 Feb) and concluding in Elkhart  Lake, WI, on 5 May. Tickets available via her website.

Chris Crain feat. Tasha Nicole [2024] - Never Meant To Fall In Love [Self Released]

The new single from Chris Crain, which follows "Stay" from last Aug, is "Never Meant To Fall In Love" featuring Chicago's Tasha Nicole McCoy released today. 

It's a soulful love ballad, presumably, aimed at the Valentine's Day market. The intro is reminiscent of Bobby Womack's "If You Think You're Lonely Now" (from "The Poet") which will give you a good idea of this song's quality

Ms Nicole released her debut album, "It's Not Over" in Oct '22 with songs co-written with Crain and released via Crain Productions.

Glenn Jones feat. Eric Nolan & Tony Exum Jr. [2024] - I Wanna Be Closer [Boy Wonder Records]

As Valentine's Day approaches the love ballads are upon us. This one is a collaboration between Glenn Jones, Eric Nolan (O'Jays) and jazz saxophonist Tony Exum Jr.. 

It's a cover of "I Wanna Be Closer", a song written by Jermaine Jackson and Gregory Williams and recorded by Switch in 1978 on their eponymous debut album for Motown imprint Gordy and was also released as the follow up single to their first hit "There'll Never Be" (#6 R&B #36 Hot 100).

Nolan met Jones a few years ago and was invited to perform on stage with him and since then they have worked well together, so Jones suggested that they collaborate on a Valentine's Day single and they came up with the idea of recording this song. It's released on Nolan's Boy Wonder Records today with two versions, the main 4:36 mix and a 4:09 radio edit.
