RJ's Latest Arrival [2023] - One Step at a Time [Barak Records] MUSIC VIDEO

RJ's Latest Arrival is a 7-piece Detroit band formed in 1976 by keyboardist Ralph James (R.J.) Rice who are perhaps best know (this side of the Atlantic at least) for their rare groove classic "Heaven In Your Arms" from their 1986 album "Hold On" also released as a single. The female lead singer is his wife DeDe Leitta. A rather grainy video of it is included below for any unfamiliar with it.

They had three US R&B Top 10 hits in the 80s with "Shackles", "Hold On" and "Off The Hook (With Your Love)" none of which troubled the Hot 100, although they almost did with another song "Baby I'm Sorry" which peaked at #107.

They broke up in 1990 but are back with a good new single "One Step At A Time" featuring hip-hop duo Slum Village (Young RJ (RJ's son) & T3) on 2 Jun which has been very well received. They have now produced a music video for the song.

Going by the sleeve photo and the video they are now reduced to a quintet.

Mack Keane [2023] - Chances [Self Released]

L.A.'s Mack Keane has made around a dozen releases since his debut album "2107" in May 2017. His first two releases in 2019 were part of a trilogy of EPs all nostalgically named after places where he grew up. 

He has subsequently released an unrelated  fourth "Intersections" in Apr '22 from which "Thought Of You" feat. Joyce Wrice did well last year.

His second single of 2023 "Chances" is released today.  He also features on Ambré's latest EP "who's loving you?" (16 Jun) on the track "ELEVATE".

Ruby Wood [2023] - My Favourite Song [First Word Records]

Jazz singer/songwriter Ruby Wood is a product of that renowned musical hub, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. She graduated from Leeds College of Music in 2008 and is perhaps best known fronting Submotion Orchestra since 2009. Ruby has performed with various outfits such as Bonobo’s live band, Nubiyan Twist, The Sugar Sister and writing and recording with Krept & Konan, Alfa Mist, Roska, Hemai, Barney Artist, Jasper Tygner, Illaman and XOA and others.

To date, including her latest single "My Favourite Song" released today by First World Records, she has released three solo singles since 2017. The new single is from her forthcoming debut EP "Sincerely". She also released a live album "Ruby!" in 2006 and has been a featured artist on numerous recordings.

She wrote the new single with assistance from Submotion Orchestra's Chris 'Fatty' Hargreaves and Danny Templeton with Arran Kent featuring on various woodwind instruments.

First World Records roster has included Children of Zeus, [ K S R ], Yasmin Lacey, Kaida Tathum and Allysha Joy to name but a few.

Apollonia Foxx & BEDA FREE [2023] - Mr. DJ [Self Released]

If you didn't already believe that music was incestuous then how about this, a sample of a sample? 

The new single "Mr. DJ" by Apollonia Foxx & BEDA FREE is based on Zhané's 1993 debut hit "Hey Mr. D.J.". It, in turn, predominantly samples Michael Wycoff's 1982 modern soul classic "Looking Up To You" (From "Love Conquers All") along with Brand Nubian "Step To The Rear" (1990) and "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" by The Jimmy Castor Bunch ("It's Just Begun" 1972) his biggest hit (#4 R&B). Hands up who remembers "The Bertha Butt Boogie" (and is going to admit it).

Apollonia Foxx (Brittani Moncion) and BEDA FREE (Samentha Buissereth) are up-and-coming RnB/Hip-Hop artists from Staten Island, NYC.

Kendra Morris [2023] - What I’m Waiting For [Karma Chief]

The title track from Kendra Morris' upcoming album "I Am What I’m Waiting" (due on 25 Aug) is released today.

It sounds a bit like 60s garage to these ears but we offer it up as perhaps a sample of things to come.

It's not that long since she released her last album "Babble" in March which again was a bit of a mixed bag with some soulful moments but with pop and rock which we didn't feel was soulful enough to be posted.
