Samuel Archer [2021] - Soul Music Vineyard [Self Released] (Full Album)

I first became aware of Samuel Archer via his remix of Raja-Nee's hit "Come Get This Love" in July this year, but he has been around since 1989. He is originally from Tobago and now resides in Newark.

He released an album "Soul Music Vineyard" on 1 Oct 2021 (available exclusively from BandCamp only) which contains 27 tracks and includes artists such as Raja-Nee, Nadira Norjahan, Terrence Russell, Afi Soul,  Camile Lawrence, Michelle Thompson, Lasro The King, Kia Renee, Jamia, Lex, The Great T.K.

My choice cuts from first listen to the album are "Like I Love You" featuring Lasro The King, "Unbothered" featuring Kia Renee and "I Want To Know" featuring Raja-Ne.

He was interviewed only last week so I've included it below, however, it's a telephone interview and the sound on his side is not brilliant so you'll need to turn up the volume.

Lou Pride [2021] - I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un [Last Bastion #LB01]

Veteran Chicago soul/blues vocalist George Lou Pride was inspired by Curtis Mayfield to go back into the studio to record a new version of his Northern Soul classic "I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un".

It was originally released on Suemi which was a small El Paso, TX, label owned by Kenneth Smith which only released just over a dozen singles in it's short existence. The record was a John Anderson (Soul Bowl) discovery first broken at the Cleethorpes Pier in 1975. An original would now cost well over £7k.

In 2005 Pride recorded thirteen tracks at David Earl's Severn Record studios, Annapolis. MD which were released on a CD "Keep On Believing" by Severn Records (CD-0037). All songs were written by Pride except one cover of Bob Marley's "Waiting In Vain".

It is due for it's first vinyl 7" release with picture sleeve via new label Last Bastion run by Andy Bellwood on 25th Feb 2022. It's limited to 300 copies so if you want one it's advisable to pre-order.

Note it is not a re-issue of the original 1970 recording but the slower and funkier 2004 version in full (5:19) and a 3:50 radio edit.

In 2014 Men Of The North Country (from Israel!) did a commendable version of it, released on Acid Jazz and, just for comparison, I've included a video of the original version, although the label scan is of a reissue/bootleg! (I'm surprised I couldn't find the original version on Spotify on a compilation!)

Will Downing [2021] - Sophisticated Soul [Self Released] (Full Album)

The new Will Downing album "Sophisticated Soul" is released today (1 Nov 2021). We've already had a taste via the single "The Warmth Of You" released on 13 Aug 2021.

It will be his 25th album in 33 years since debuting with his self-titled album in 1988. He also had his first hit that year with a cover of Deniece Williams' "Free". Amazingly, after checking his back catalogue, I discovered that he has not had a single in the Billboard Hot 100, although many of his albums have done well!

Prior to going solo he was a member of Wally Jump Junior & The Criminal Element (produced by Arthur Baker) who had a few minor hits in the UK but not in US.

As we've come to 'expect' it's another strong set. It's a bit 'academic' trying to choose a standout as it's solid throughout, but on first impression "Never Wanted Anyone" is a stone cold killer, "Baby I'm Yours" and "Come With Me" stood out but really you could choose any three! If this is not a #1 on UK soul charts I'll be very surprised!

Fabich [2021] - 405 (Feat. Vetta Borne) / Midnight (Feat. Fika) [Unity Records]

Fabich is a German (Munich) DJ/producer based in London who has been quite prolific this year with nine singles already under his belt.

I may be wrong, but I don't think I've seen "405" on any playlists? It's in a similar 'groove' as the last post from The Shadowboxers and another that's been lurking for quite a few weeks, released 1 Oct 2021.

I suspect that there is an album looming as all releases this year have been assigned a number on the top left corner of the sleeve? "405" featuring Vetta Borne (from Melbourne, Australia) is #8 which was superseded on Friday (29 Oct 2021) with #9 "Midnight" featuring Fika a duo signed to Tru Thoughts in Brighton.

I prefer "405" but may as well post both alongside each other for you to decide for yourself.
