Dickie Wonder [2024] - Nobody Knows [Sound Of Soul]

A couple of weeks ago a 1966 recording on Sound Of Soul by Little Tommy was reissued. Today we have another by Dickie Wonder (Richard L. Jackson). Both sides have been reissued separately i.e. "Nobody Knows" and "Story Of My Love" but we're only posting the former as the latter is quite a dreary doo-wop style ballad.

"Nobody Knows" is a 'proper', archetypal Northern Soul stomper. There were two versions of the song released:  a slightly shorter version which has female backing vocals (SS 5002) and this one which has no female backing (SS 217672).

We've also posted the version with female vocals from YouTube below which was reissued on a single sided 7" by Sonic Wax in 2020. Which camp are you in as some prefer the early raw version and others the sweetened version with backing vocals (we're in the latter camp)?

The digitally reissued version is the first release. The song was later re-recorded with female backing when Cameo Parkway picked up a distribution deal for it. It was then reissued on Golden Triangle (possibly around 1976) billed as Dickie (Sweet Sugar) Wonder which, even though a reissue, commands high prices.

Like the Little Tommy song, this track also featured on the "Free Angela" compilation released by Golden Triangle in 1971 so perhaps the 45 was released around the same period? A comment on 45Cat states that the A side ("All My Friends Call Me A Fool") was registered in 1976 but perhaps he may be confusing it with Larry Saunders' version on his 1976 album "Stranger"?

Whilst digging around BMI we noticed that August Moon Music now seems to be managed by Secret Stash, so these digital reissues are probably from Secret Stash. We headed over to their website to confirm this and it transpires that August Moon (the owner of Sound Of Soul and Golden Triangle) passed in Jul 2023 and a tribute page was posted if you wish to learn more about the music scene in Norfolk, VA, in the 60s and 70s.

Paul Smith [2024] - I'll Run / Only Once In A Lifetime // Ain't That Something [Hit And Run #HR 1556]

The second Hit And Run vinyl reissue today comes from Chicago's Paul Smith. Very little seems to be known about Smith (and a Google search with such a name would prove futile). What is know is that he released two singles on Chicago label Jacklyn in 1966, the label's first release "I'll Run" /  "Ain't That Something" which he followed with a pairing of  "Ain't That Something" and "Only Once In A Lifetime"  on the label's fourth release.

The label was owned by Johnny Haygood and named after one of his daughters. He was also the stepfather of one Darrow Fletcher and set up the label as a vehicle for 15 yr old Fletcher after being disillusioned by the royalties received from Fletcher's first four singles leased to NY's Groovy label.

Jacklyn ran for only two years between 1966-68 and released just ten singles.(whether or not Jacklyn 1007 was ever released is a mystery as it is not listed anywhere). Whilst Haygood set up the label primarily for his stepson, Fletcher only released three of the ten singles.

The label's first release by Smith is probably the most sought after and is an in-demander on the rare soul scene, sufficiently for it to be bootlegged. Only one original is for sale on Discogs so they are very hard to come by but now you don't have to settle for a bootleg (apparently quite a convincing counterfeit identified by the running time of 2:30 vs 2:20 on original) as you can now buy an official reissue.

For his only other known single he reused the first's flipside along with "Only Once In A Lifetime", so this reissue consists of all his known recordings. Smith is on writing credits for two of the three songs  We wonder what happened to him as all three songs are top quality, with "I'll Run" being a firm favourite for many years and "Ain't That Something" being very much in the Darrow Fletcher vein.

Deon Jackson [2023] - Happily Ever After / (You've Got) The Power Of Love [Hayley #HR034]

A couple of releases of previously unissued Detroit recordings announced in June, which seem to have been delayed, are now available.

The first consists of two sides from Deon Jackson. "Happily Ever After" was originally recorded by Len Barry on Decca in 1966, but found its way to Detroit and producer Ollie McLoughlin and arranger Mike Terry in the mid 1960s.

The flip "(You've Got) The Power Of Love" was written by Richard McDougall (a member of the Capitols but they never recorded the song). The Esquires released it under a shortened tittle "You Got The Power" via Wand in 1968 and it found it's way onto a CD compilation "The Esquires – Get On Up ... And Get Away With The Esquires" in 1998 by Westside compiled by Tony Rounce, as well as a couple of others.

Carl Henderson [2023] - You're All I Need b/w That Girl [Numero Group #NUM4480]

Numero Group continue to reissue singles from Anthony Renfro's 60s/70s L.A. based label supporting his name. Renfro was a young grocery clerk eager to make it in the music business but was advised to focus on production by both Sam Cooke and James Brown, who told him bluntly that he couldn't sing, so he set about creating his own label which, although had little commercial success, has left a legacy of many records played 'up North'.

We posted Morris Chestnut last week and this time out it's Carl Henderson with both sides of his 1966 outing on the label "You're All I Need" b/w "That Girl". The top side a deep soul ballad with flip being a one time in demand Northern Soul stomper. Both sides were also recorded earlier on the label by The Sequins on two separate releases. Their version of "That Girl",  retitled "That Boy" is a tough one to find (their versions are also included below). You may recall from earlier posts for them that, The Sequins were sisters Brenda & Patrice Holloway and Pat Hunt.

It was Henderson's third of five singles for the label. His first, "Sharing You", sold well enough to be picked up by A&M and released on their Omen imprint. The song was also recorded by Mitty Collier on Chess who had her biggest hit with it reaching #10 R&B and scraping into the Hot 100 at #97 in Feb 1966. His next single,  two self-written songs, was released only on Omen.

Henderson had released a single earlier in 1962 with The Dell Kings on Texas label Renco. Prior to that he was a member of Texas doo-wop group The Lyrics who released two singles on San Antonio's Harlem label in 1959. He wrote three of the six sides.

Seven of his Renfro sides can be found on Numero Group's Eccentric series "Eccentric Soul: The Renfro Label" released in 2020, three of them (including "That Girl") are also included on Kent's "Renfro Soul Story: Priceless Los Angeles Northern Soul" (2004).

Texas [2023] - Keep On Talking [PIAS Recordings]

Originally released on 14 Jun (and included on a Texas compilation "The Very Best Of 1989 – 2023") but a video was published for it on Friday (22 Sep)  We wonder why? It's a cover of James Barnett's "Keep On Talking" by Texas, although only Sharleen Spiteri appears in the video along with some young dancers.

The Spooner Oldham and Dann Penn written song was recorded in Muscle Shoals and released in  Jan 1966 on Fame. It's Barnett's only listed recording although the B side, "Take A Good Look", and a previously unreleased song "Tears Me Up" are available on a Kent compilation "This Is Fame 1964-1968" (2016) and another, "You're So Fine", is included in a four track release in 2021.

Not one for the purists perhaps, so the original is included below.

Percy Sledge & Budapest Symphony Orchestra [2023] - When A Man Loves A Woman (Re-Recorded) [Orchestral Version] [Cleopatra Records]

On the back of the Northern Soul Proms a couple of weeks ago and several other orchestralised albums (e.g. Al Green, Motown, Myles Sanko to name a few), Percy Sledge's 1966 classic get the orchestral treatment via Budapest Symphony Orchestra.

Sadly it is probably the only song known by many from him which charted twice in the UK reaching #4 initially in 1966 and #2 when reissued in 1987 as a result of it featuring in one of the Levi's TV commercials. His only other UK chart hit was the 1966 follow-up single "Warm And Tender Love". "When A Man Loves A Woman" was his very first release which hit #1 on Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts.  Needless to say he never managed to equal it's success.

The song was written by two members of Sledges' group The Esquires (Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright) and originally recorded at Rick Hall's Fame Studios in Muscle Shoal. When a deal was struck with Atlantic Records, Jerry Wexler requested that it be re-recorded as he thought that the horns were out of tune. It was duly re-recorded at DJ Quin Ivy's Norala Studios, however, there was a tape mix up and it was actually the original recording that was released.

Sledge died of liver cancer in 2015 aged 74.

The Masqueraders [2023] - How // One More Chance / Be Happy For Me [Hit And Run #HR 1547]

The second new reissue from Hit And Run consists of three sides from The Masqueraders from the catalogue of Lou Beatty's La Beat label from 1966 and 1967. The label was co-owned with James Hendrix who had earlier set up the Carrie label in Detroit.

We've covered The Masqueraders in depth recently as, sadly, lead singer Sam Hutchins died on 20 Dec 2022. So for background information on the group please visit the link above.

Some unfortunate events outside of their control prevented them becoming household names, such as the civil rights riots when they were on the verge making a breakthrough in 1967. However, they got a glimpse of the spotlight some 50 years later, three members still together, in 2017 appearing on America's Got Talent winning the hearts of a nation.

The A side is their very hard to find 1966 single "How" on La Beat which has been a Northern Soul favourite for many years. The B side consists of a superb slice of 'crossover' soul "One More Chance" which is possibly my own favourite from them but they did record some great music which has languished in relative oblivion. It is paired with "Be Happy For Me", another 'so soulful' mid-temp song, both released in 1967 on La Beat.

It's 'criminal' really that none of these even entered the R&B chart at the time, but are now available for a fraction of the cost of original vinyl which are now all well into three figures with "How" being the rarest which is into four figures.

The Supremes [2023] - These Boots Are Made For Walking (SILO x Martin Wave Remix) [Motown]

I saw this released last week and havered over whether to bother posting. It is of course the, Lee Hazelwood written, kitsch song "These Boots Are Made For Walking" a #1 hit for Nancy Sinatra in early 1966. It was covered by The Supremes who included it on their "Supremes A Go-Go" album in 1966 (which only saw a single release in Argentina on an EP). A new 'souped up' SILO x Martin Wave Remix. was released on 13 Jan '23.  

A stomping instrumental version was an unlikely 'monster' on Northern Soul dancefloors in the mid 70s by The Happy Cats when instrumentals were all the rage. So much so that John Anderson reissued it on his Grapevine label in 1978 to satisfy demand with a different B side (a vocal "Destroy That Boy") to the original on Omack in 1966. The same song (with different writer's credits) was recorded by The What Four (a NYC based white female garage band) on Columbia as "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" which 45Cat lists as Oct 1966, so I don't know who recorded it first but believe the The Happy Cats' version was unreleased in the US and was perhaps sent to Anderson to release with 'Boots'. There is also an unissued Columbia acetate version by an unknown artist posted on YouTube and Spotify which was reissued in 2014.

It is the only (listed) release for the Omack label which I would guess was owned by Ollie McLaughlin who was a Detroit producer who owned a number of labels and was behind many a NS tune and it wouldn't surprise me to learn that several Funk Brother are moonlighting on this one as it has that feel.

I said 'listed' above as there is at least one other release on the label not listed by Joe Hunter & His Happy Cats (same group?) Pajama Party b/w Squaw #S-437 which is surely the same label (although the design and colour are different) as it has McLaughlin Pub. Co. on the label and Ollie McLaughlin on writer's credits. Assuming it is the same Joe Hunter, it also reinforces the Funk Brothers connection as Hunter of course was their pianist, and the Ramsey Lewis style piano is quite prominent on The Happy Cats' instrumental.

Posted for novelty/topical value more than anything else and to expose the instrumental version which is a bit of a 'Marmite' tune.

Sharon McMahan [2022] - Got To Find Another Guy / Love Is Wonderful [Big Man Records #BMR 1011]

Sharan McMahan may not be a name familiar to many other than die hard rare soul followers. She is possibly best known to them for her 1973 Columbia single "Get Out Of My Life" which was a modern soul spin and reissued by Expansion in 2011. However, prior to that she released two singles for Ollie McLaughlin's Karen label. 

A side from each of them has been reissued together on the latest 7" release by Mark Bicknell's Big Man Records. The A side is her 1966 single "Got To Find Another Guy" which was originally flipped with a version of Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger 66". The B side being her earlier 1964 single "Love Is Wonderful". She wrote both songs.

Sharon began writing songs from the age of 12 and auditioned for Ollie McLaughlin who, as well as Karen, owned a number of Detroit labels in the 60s and early 70s, Ruth named after his wife and Karen, Carla and Moira named after his daughters.

Only three singles are listed for the Ruth label released between 1959-62 and the last consisted of two songs written by McMahon recorded by Gracie Darnell which I believe may have been her first recorded song. 

Other McMahon songs have been recorded by Barbara Lewis, Deon Jackson, Johnnie Mae Matthews and even a song posted in The Three Degrees playlist last week, "You're The Fool", which was on their 1970 Roulette album and the B side of the single "I'd Take You" and was also recorded by Etta James and Mavis Staples the same year and Madeline Bell in 1971.

Popular Mersey Beat group, The Searchers, had a UK #11 pop hit with one of her songs  "Someday We're Gonna Love Again" in 1966, also recorded, and was a big Northern Soul tune, by Barbara Lewis.

The song recorded by Johnnie Mae Matthews is a rare record, "I Have No Choice", that is huge on the UK rare soul scene (reissued by Hit And Run in 2020). I was also later recorded on an album "Talking To The People" by Matthew's son's band Black Nasty in 1973. An unreleased recording of the song turned up which was thought to be at the time her daughter Audrey Matthews. A 1967 demo version recorded by Sharon McMahan has subsequently been released on 7" by Hayley Records around 2015/16. Audrey claims that it is not her singing, rather Sharon, and Sharon also claims it is not her on the first version, and both version are different so it's still a mystery who recored the one attributed to Audrey. In the 70s one of her songs, 'Love Is  The Key", was recorded by Benny Golson on his "I'm Always Dancin' To The Music", and Norhern Soul followers may be interested to know that one Jodi Mathis was the female vocalist on this track under the name Mortonette Jenkins (she also went by Mortonette Stephens). More recently McMahon had a song, "Do Over", included on a Preston Glass CD "Soul In The Rear View Mirror" in 2014

Deon Jackson [2022] - Someday The Sun Will Shine / I Remember The Feeling [Hit And Run #HR 1555]

The second release on 17 Nov '22 from Hit And Run is a pair of unreleased sides (at the time) from, generally overlooked and underrated, Detroit artist Deon Jackson. 

The lead side "Someday The Sun Will Shine" was a self-written, unknown and unreleased , song until an acetate was discovered (by Dean Anderson at Stafford in the 80s now owned by Carl Fortnum I believe?) which resulted in a bootleg appearing on Canadian label Maple St. CD "Detroit Dynamite" and then on a counterfeit Carla label with "I've Got So Much Love". Hit And Run has carefully remastered it for vinyl release (included below). 

The flip side is a cover of the Barbara Lewis, Rose Marie McCoy written, floater "I Remember The Feeling" which she released as a B side to "Baby What Do You Want Me To Do" on Atlantic in 1966. It was paired with the Barbara Lewis version on 7" by Stardust (probably late 90s / early 00s as a guess) and was also issued by Goldie 45 along with the biggest of his only two hits "Love Makes The World Go Around" circa 1974.

We did a fairly comprehensive post on Deon Jackson earlier this year when we came across a 25 track digital compilation "Presenting Deon Jackson" but omitted "Someday The Sun Will Shine".

Mary Wells [2022] - Love Letters / Hands Off My Baby [Soul4Real #S4R24]

The second vinyl release today from Soul4Real is a pairing of mid 60s unreleased Atco recordings from Mary Wells.

Wells left Motown in 1965 unhappy with her contract and joined 20th Century Fox where she released two albums and around six singles. The albums failed and the singles didn't do particularly well (although a few have had plays on the UK rare soul scene "Use Your Head" and "Never Never Leave Me" in particular). Later that year she moved on to Atlantic subsidiary Atco where she didn't fare much better with only one single, "Dear Lover", charting which has the storming Northern Soul tune "Can't You See (You're Losing Me)" on the flip. She released only three further singles for the label before she was off again, this time to Jubilee for the remainder of the 60s and early 70s.

Ironically, she never emulated the success she had at Motown between 1960-64 where she had three R&B chart #1 hits ("You Beat Me To The Punch", "Two Lovers" and of course "My Guy").

The two sides of the Soul4Real release are "Love Letters" (written by Gerald Sims not the Ketty Lester song) and "Hands Off My Baby" written by Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie and Tony Hester and produced by Carl Davis. I believe that these first featured on a 1995 Ichiban CD compilation "Dear Lover - The Atco Sessions" which consisted of 15 tracks but there is now a digital version with 35 tracks "Dear Lover: The Atco, Jubilee & Reprise Years 1965-1974" which looks like it's streaming only (i.e. no download available).

Going by the fifteen tracks on the 1995 compilation there are at least another five unreleased Atco recordings: "Satisfaction", "Love Makes The World Go Round", "In The Midnight Hour", "My World Is Empty Without You Babe" and "Good Lovin'" which all look like covers versions.

It's the first time on vinyl for both sides which are available now from Soul4Real or your vinyl retailer.

Bobby Hebb [2022] - Sunny / Bread [Phillips]

A bit of a random reissue has appeared today, both sides of Bobby Hebb's 1966 #2 Hot 100 hit "Sunny" / "Bread".

The song should be pretty well known and has been covered hundreds of times (SecondHandSongs lists 450 which includes dozens on instrumental versions) by many of the greats including Wilson Pickett, Chuck Jackson, Johnny Mathis, Nancy Wilson, Dusty Springfield, Frankie Valli, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Maxine Brown, Mary Wells, Shirley Bassey, James Brown, Melba Moore, Ella Fitzgerald to just scratch the surface. 

Although Hebb wrote the song, he was not first to record it, it was recorded first by Japanese singer Mieko Hirota in Oct 1965 on "Ah! Soul...Introducing Miko On Stage (Live)" but was only available via reel-to-reel tape.

Rather than just posting those two sides, to make it more interesting, I've posted the full album. However, for me, his best single is "You Want To Change Me" from 1968 which completely sank without trace except on Northern Soul dancefloors. In fact after "Sunny" he had only two more Hot 100 hits with "A Satisfied Mind" (#40 1966) and then "Sunny 76" (#94 1975). In the UK "Love Love Love" was a Top 40 hit in 1972 on the back on NS exposure.

One of the best songs on the album is the last track "For You" which I'm pretty sure has been recorded by someone else, but can't for the life of me think who it is.

UPDATE: Thanks to Yves for reminding me who did "For You". It was of course Chris Bartley (and I even have the single which is the B side to his brilliant "You Get Next To My Heart" from 1967 on Vando, a great little cheap double-sider). The Presidents then released it as a single on Sussex in 1970. With a bit more digging, it was first released by The Spellbinders as a single in 1965 and then on their only album "Magic Of" in 1966. It was also recorded by The Chants (the embryo group of The Real Thing) in 1967 on Page One and Superior Movement as a single in 1981 on Chycago International Music (C.I.M.) and also included on their album "The Key To Your Heart".

Darrow Fletcher [2022] - Infatuation / What Have I Got Now [Jacklyn #REPRO 06]

Ace/Kent have a batch of new vinyl releases due on 28 Oct 2022. They will be released on a mix their Kent Select imprint and various repros on look-a-like original labels. 

Kicking off with the most appealing to me as Darrow Fletcher has been a long time favoured artist since buying his Northern Soul classic "What Good Am I Without You" back in the day and also one of the sides featured on this repro reissue "Infatuation" both of which have the superb "Little Girl" on the flip and released on Jacklyn in 1967. However, Kent has gone with the A side from his first release on the label in 1966,  "What Have I Got Now". which also has a superb flip side "Sitting There At Night". Prior to that he'd released four singles on Groovy, all well worth checking out.

Jacklyn was a label owned by Fletcher's father Johnny Haygood and named after his daughter. The label was Chicago based and released just ten singles between 1966-69 (1001-011 with no listing from 1007) with three of them being by Fletcher.

His biggest success was with his debut single on Groovy "The Pain Gets A Little Deeper" / "My Judgement Day" which was #23 R&B and broke into the lower reaches of the Hot 100 at #89. He achieved just two further R&B chart entries "I Think I'm Gonna Write A Song" in 1970 and "We've Go to Get This Understanding" in 1976, but many of his recordings have been played on the UK rare soul scene over the years and he came to the UK to perform at 6Ts soul weekender in 2006.

Wayne Cochran [1965/1966] - Harlem Shuffle / I'm In Trouble

"Not many people know this" but long before 'The Donald' became leader of the free world he performed under the alias Wayne Cochran in the 60s!

Cochran was from Thomaston, GA, and known as "The White Knight Of Soul", and certainly knew how to put on a show, just watch the two videos below, one a cover of Bob & Earl's "Harlem Shuffle" he recorded in 1965 and the other "Goin' Back To Miami" the A side of a record that got spins on the Northern Soul scene in the mid 70s "I'm In Trouble" from 1966.
